Steve Kings Blog for the Xmas Match this year at Sedges
Christmas Match at The Sedges
With 27 anglers booked into the Christmas match at Sedges Fishery, anticipation was high as we gathered to fish Tile and half of Brick Lake. The match was divided into three sections of nine anglers each, with everyone eager to draw a corner peg. Personally, I wasn’t too fussed about which lake I drew.
As it turned out, I ended up on peg 2 on Brick Lake—a peg that had performed decently on Saturday with carp. However, looking at my section, I knew it would be tough to beat Mark Case on peg 10, a renowned hot spot. With that in mind, I decided to focus on the silvers, knowing we had a super pool payout for 1st overall and 1st silvers in each section.
I set up two silvers lines at 11 meters to fish maggot over groundbait, and a third line at 14.5 meters with meat and micro pellets. To cover all bases, I also set up a bomb rod and a second rod with a micro method feeder. My plan was to target silvers but be ready to switch to carp if the opportunity arose.
From the whistle, Brian on peg 1 started like a rocket, landing two carp within 10 minutes down the edge. Meanwhile, a quick glance up the lake revealed Mark Case on peg 10 already into a fish on the tip. It quickly became clear that my best chance was sticking to the silvers plan.
Over the next few hours, I worked my lines patiently. The meat line produced a few skimmers early on, while the maggot line added small roach to the net. However, after about 3.5 hours, the bites dried up completely. With time slipping away, I upped the feed on the meat line and managed to snare a few carp. Simultaneously, I began pinging pellets over my method line, which resulted in four carp towards the end of the match.
When the final whistle blew, I had managed six carp for 45lbs and around 10lbs of silvers, which was enough to win my lake overall as well as the silvers in my section. To my surprise, I even finished second in the entire match!
I’ll admit, it wasn’t my finest day on the bank—I fished poorly in places and relied on a bit of luck to pull things together. But as they say, it’s better to be lucky than good!
Results
• Section Winners 21-30: Tony Newell(Overall) & Rob Dodd (silvers)
• Section Winners 31-40: Martin (Overall) & David Allen (Silvers)
• Section Winners 1-10: Steve King (Overall) & Lee (Silvers)
Special congratulations to Tony Fry for organizing the match and providing fantastic prizes, and to Tony Newell, who stormed to overall victory with a stunning 120+lbs. A big shoutout also to my good mate David Allen winning silvers overall.
Next up: Avalon Fisheries, Let’s hope for a good draw!

Steve Kings blog that he puts on Face Book I like to add them on here for all the non social media people out there 👍
A Challenging Day at The Sedges
Sedges Fishery’s Tile Lake in Bridgewater is a fantastic venue, known for its quality fishing and exciting matches. However, with the weather cooling over the past week, conditions could be tricky, as the fish tend to become less active. Sunday brought a glimmer of hope with slightly warmer temperatures, but the forecast of cloudy skies and eventual rain meant we were in for a challenging day on the bank.
When the draw came, I picked peg 21. My reaction was mixed. I’d been hoping for a peg in the 30s for a change, but peg 21 is known to hold a few carp, so I knew it could produce. With cautious optimism, I set up two rods: one for the straight bomb and another for a small method feeder. I also prepared an edge rig for fishing meat close in, hoping to pick up a few bonus fish.
The morning started well. I managed to catch a few carp early on the straight bomb and later added a couple more using the method feeder. These initial bites gave me confidence, but the session soon took a turn for the worse. For several hours, I couldn’t buy a bite. Paul, fishing peg 40, was in a similar situation during the middle of the match, but he’d already done the damage in the first 45 minutes, landing six carp in rapid succession to secure a solid lead.
As the match progressed, I needed a new plan. In the final hour, I switched tactics and moved up the right-hand bank, fishing meat close in. This decision turned out to be a game-changer. The carp I landed were absolute “crocodiles”, big hard fighting fish that bolstered my final weight significantly.
When the whistle blew, I ended the match with 71lbs, enough to secure second place. Paul Lock blistering start on peg 40 earned him the top spot with 89lbs, while Tony Newell on peg 35 rounded out the top three with over 50lbs. Meanwhile, Rob Eagle took the silvers pot with a solid 16lbs.
Reflecting on the day, I’m pleased with the result, especially given the tough conditions. Peg 21 proved to be a decent swim despite my initial reservations, and adapting my tactics in the final hour paid off. The next big event for me is the Avalon Fisheries Christmas Match, and I’m already looking forward to getting back on the bank. Until then, tight lines!

3.11.24 Trinity Woodlands
Blog by Steve King
Trinity waters Bridgewater
Today was a challenging day on the bank at Trinity Waters in Bridgewater. I went in with high hopes, particularly after hearing from the local lads that a corner peg was the golden ticket. Corner spots on this lake are typically known for their productivity, so when I pulled peg 23, I knew it wasn’t quite what I’d been hoping for. Peg 23 used to be a renowned peg for silvers, but times have changed, and it doesn’t hold that status anymore.
I set up the “kitchen sink” approach—hoping to cover all my bases. My plan was to rely on the straight bomb for the carp, but to be honest, it didn’t go as I’d imagined. I didn’t get a single bite on the bomb. Instead, I ended up working the pole, and even that only gave me about 5 or 6 bites in total. The bites were scarce, but I managed to catch three carp and a couple of roach, enough to keep me in the game, even if just barely.
The weigh-in was surprising, given how tough it was I ended up with 24 lbs, which was actually good enough for second place in the match. Considering the conditions, that result was a shocker. Ian Townsend took a well-deserved win with a weight of 55 lbs from peg 8, fishing sweetcorn and making it look easy. Peg 8 turned out to be the standout spot on the day, and Ian made the most of it.
On the silvers side, John won the silver pool with a modest but respectable 12 lbs, while George came in second with 9 lbs. Hats off to all the framers for finding the fish and getting the results.
The weather was overcast throughout, adding a bit of a chill to the air. I think it played a part in making the day so challenging? With this session wrapped up, It will be on to the next one in a few weeks time …
Until then, tight lines.

Sedges Tile 27.10.24
I done this match with the club after a couple of months of not. being around as I had to work & had some other fishing things on, for company I had Rich Coles, the day before there was a feeder comp on the complex with reports of rock hard well yes it certainly was.
I’ve fished for anything that swims with these reports in mind then adapt as the day goes, that but didn’t really happen. I’ve hooked five
carp & only got two out I’ve had plenty of bites but mostly small fish come 2.40 I’ve totally had enough & packed up & chucked back probably 10lb ish..
On to the next in two weeks time, first blog for ages but can’t find the motivation to make it interesting as it wasn’t

18.9.24 Sedges Tile
What a match a proper nail biting conclusion
Had a breakie with the guys always good in the cafe fully recommend it really good value infact to cheap..
On to the draw & I’ve pulled out 40 never had it before so I’ve kept the day so simple I’ve chucked to the tree looking for carp but only getting a few skimmers eventually I’ve had a few carp turn up I’ve fed the the stomps hoping there might be few there but only one the wind was horrendous - I’ve down two lines down the margin one long left which in hindsight was to long as I can’t really chase them with the wind & a top kit on the right both geared up for paste long story short I’ve lost 10 carp fuming but weighed in a good weight so not to bad Stan & Eric have stole the show well done to you both. I’ve been watching Mike West so go for it & he did & topping up on Silvers well done to everyone.
See you all soon I totally forgot about it this week that’s why it’s up late Good on you Ross for reminding me on the What’s App 👍👍

Terry & Dicks Silver Memorial Match
This write is off the HLS Wats App by Phill B
Trinity Woodlands 03.8.24
Trinity Woodlands
Could do a turned up for a match drew ok 6hrs later packed up & went home but na I’ll give the write up ago but it’s not going to be a riveting read let me a sure you..
So as normal nice & early John D & Tony F were already there had a nice chat with them. I booked on this one as last week they had their memorial match for Terry & Dick & reports were carp were everywhere & a lot of them so why not I thought as I’ve not been here for ages infact 18 month maybe 🤔
A carp orientated match for me I’ve set up 6 tops for all different styles - paste short hard pellets long on the deck & shallow but the wind ruined that & paste down the edge a bomb rod & pellet wag.
Most bases covered.
I did want to be on the near bank as I feel that’s better but not to be peg 12, I’ve had two on the method 2 on the pellet wag & lost one & one down the edge & it was literally only one there I could here Stan down in the corner literally emptying it on the tip I’ve sat on my box & watched Lee slap it was like mill pond down there & well done to those guys 😃I’ve watched Mike W opposite fish paste & in the afternoon it went well for him hooking some good lumps Tony F was on the pellet wag just picking up one every now & then on the bomb aswell. Tony N went off like a train, Eric was just sat there he had the same leg as he fished on a pleasure sesh & had 17 carp - that wasn’t the case today .
On a positive it was nice to go back & it looked lovely especially Ash that’ll be my next pleasure sesh when I eventually get chance.
Avalon for me sat with the HLS guys but a Whatchet Club Match see you at Sedges 👍

Sedges 21.07.24
Steve Kings Write up from Sunday
Sedges Fishery,Brick lake
Today match was at the The Sedges ,Brick Lake. The weather started with an overcast sky, as the day progressed, the sun broke through, turning it into a beautiful, warm day,a perfect backdrop for a six-hour fishing match.
Peg 7 was my home for the day so my setup was comprehensive so set up a shallow rig, a deck rig, a pellet wag and a small feeder also a meat rig (Didn’t have a bite on the meat rig)I decided to feed 4mm pellets on the long pole, enhanced with a generous glug of smog bait additive to give them an extra edge. The goal was to keep the fish interested and to help my chances to catch as I thought pegs 10 and 11 would do well today
I kicked off the match with the feeder, bagging two fish while I primed the pellet line at 13 meters. To draw the fish to the surface, I continuously pinged pellets over the feeder. Despite these efforts, the first few hours proved challenging. The fish were not as responsive as I had hoped, and bites were few and far between.
As the hours ticked by, I managed to catch a few carp on the long pole and a couple more on the pellet waggler. However, it was a tough start, and the first half of the match felt like a grind. The turning point came when I switched to the shallow rig on the long pole. This change in strategy paid off and I had eight to nine carp over the next few hours, bringing a much-needed boost to my catch.
In the final stages, I reverted to the deck rig, which yielded another four carp. The last hour was slow, with only one carp making it to my net. Despite this, I was happy with my overall match as I had to work hard to keep the bite coming. I was very happy to win today with 121 pounds
Tony, fishing on peg 9, claimed second place with 88 pounds, while Brian on peg 10, took third with 82 pounds. The silvers competition was a tight race. Phil Dodd emerged victorious with 20 pounds, narrowly edging out Rob Eagle, who had 19 pounds 10 ounces, and Dave T who finished third with 19 pounds 8 ounces.
Reflecting on the match on my drive home, we’ll starting on the feeder while priming the pellet line was crucial. It allowed me to establish a steady start and keep my options open. Secondly, the consistent feeding of pellets over the feeder line played a significant role in drawing the fish up in the water, even though the response was slower than expected. The real game-changer was the decision to switch to a shallow rig on the long pole, which significantly increased my catch rate in the mid to late stages of the match.
The match at Brick Lake today was a day to be patience, The ever-changing weather and the initially slow bites to start with but persistent led to a rewarding finish. Winning with 121 pounds was the icing on the cake. And again a great day at the Sedges Fishery.
Next up for me is the charity match at Avalon and there are some great anglers going so looking forward to it …a good peg needed please .
Sedges 21.07.24
Sedges today
The lake with out the islands can’t never remember the names lol 😂 anyway I’ve drawn 14 to my left Dave Allen & right P..Dodd straight across not what I wanted to see Steve King, only because we’d both be out on the feeder & who’s gonna take the fish from who ??
Basic set up the same as Dave really I’ve got meat - no good today nor anytime so far this year, Gb for down the edge 4m dampen down for the feeder & 8m for feeding & corn.
The wind was straight at us so that made things tricky - short pole for everything..
I’ve gone out at the all in & the wind has picked up so feeding the rope isn’t an option, I’ve made the decision to use the feeder to feed to fish & it’s got me two carp over time.
I’m also doing quick chicks to the rope which has got me some good skimmers..
On the pole I’ve dumped in two big pots of corn I do this during the summer it can become very fruitful at different venues today was not a write off with that but the wind was making this tuff & uncomfortable.
It’s definitely a game of patience today as no one is bagging Dave next to me is on one carp Phill is on a few skimmers, opposite I can see Brian catching a couple Tony’s not doing a lot Kingy catching a few not rocking it tho Eric & Lee look still.
Martin come up behind at 1.30 & said he’s not doing any good & hes going I looked & thought that sounds the best idea all day it was t worth hanging around, the fishing was hard & so on with the wind - I’ve thought if I go now I can prep for Wednesday”s Avalon match 😁🎣
Definitely a game of two parts the afternoon has fished a lot better than the morning the weather cheered up a & made the fishing more productive.
A few of us are doing the Charity Match at Avalon Wednesday looking forward to it see you next time in a few weeks 😁🎣

Summerhayes Sellicks 14.07.24
Well done to all that done this one I did hear it was fishing hard & the results show that..
Well done to all the Framers I didn’t do it so no write up after a mare of a day at Goodiford Mill which I came 4th
I’ve booked into Sedges so a write up after that day 😎🎣
Steve King did his write up on Face Book so I thought I’d put it up on here for the guys that arnt on Fb
Fishing at Summerhayes Fishery in Bridgwater is always an adventure, and this particular trip was no exception. We had Sellicks lake today, the weather started off sunny, promising perfect conditions. However, as often happens with British weather, it soon turned cloudy. Despite the change, I was optimistic as Phil Beards and I did the pegging leaving out peg 1, which is known to be a flyer. And tbh we wanted to make it as fair as we could.
I drew peg 3, a spot that usually promises a straight forward session. I planned for an easy day, primarily focusing on the short pole but also set up the long pole to reach the far bank, and a tip rod as a backup. I was ready for whatever the day would bring.
I started with the short pole, confident in my setup, but to my dismay, I didn't get a single bite. Undeterred, I switched to the long pole, hoping for better luck. Yet, even with the change in tactics, the fish remained elusive. An hour passed without any significant action, and I started to feel the pressure. Looking around, I noticed Lee on peg 8 was catching steadily, which only added to my frustration.
The second hour i had one small carp on the pellet long, I decided it was time for a new approach. Stepping off my box, I reached for the So simple baits RTG Range Chocolate Orange bait. Its rich, enticing scent was my last hope to turn the day around. Given the water's blue tint from the dye Pete had added to control algae, I figured a strong-smelling bait might be the key.
To my relief, the Chocolate Orange bait worked wonders. The previously quiet waters started to yield results, though it remained a tough day overall. While it wasn’t a bountiful catch by any means, the change in bait brought enough improvement to keep me motivated.
By the end of the match,Danny to my left on peg 4 had managed just one roach, and Phil on peg 2 had three carp. And I finished with nine small carp, for 35 Lbs and this was enough to secure second place in the match. Rob Dodd on peg 13 took first place with 45 Lbs and Lee, despite his strong start, ended up third with 28 Lbs on peg 8.And the silvers pools was won on peg 23 with 10Lbs by Rob eagle,Second was George with 2lbs ish and Paul Lock was 3 third with 14 ozs ,A hard day and the lake is out of sorts for sure but I still love it …Sedges next week bring it on !!!

Me & Kingy done the So Simple Charity Match Sunday at Goodiford Mill a cracking bunch of lads from the Devon & Cornwall area Kingy drew towards the top end just past the car park gate on the corner I drew peg 23 not a good area I was told open water & deep apparently a good winter peg hmm that’ll be right I blew out didn’t get a bite after 12.30 mad that - Kingy went for 2nd 👏👏 & the Jammy Git won a Drennan Rod somehow 🤣🤣 not quite sure when I’m back probably Avalon see you there 😁🎣

Didn’t do this one as I was on the venues canal lake on the Saturday doing the Pairs League which we were really happy to have our still second place closing the gap for first 😁
I spoke to Steve King on the Saturday evening & I’m not surprised so see him take the match - I’ve read Steve’s status on Fb very detailed & well written he mentioned Mike West fishing at 14m on paste, a very well done to him in fact a very well done to everyone as the weights look 👀 good. Not sure if im doing Summerhayes this Sunday yet it’ll be a last minute thing for me, the sheet will be up as normal tho 😁👍🎣

Avalon 09.06.24
That was rough for me & few others but I think I was the worst with 2 skimmer at 3pm.
Thought I’d be good for the pellet wag & a bomb over the top the wind made it to hard for the pellet wag as the wind just kept blowing the wag into open water as it was a end island chuck, group feeding was just impossible.
It just wasn’t right, I did chuck a cage feeder over the top but I’m not one for sitting on a tip & just hoping it’s going to go. Rob E was on my left as normal lol 😂 followed by Rod D to my right I had Tony N then Lee, all I could hear was splashing from them so that was well in my head Lee was on the wag & Tony on the paste then a expander well done to them I couldn’t literally get anything going tried new lines but nothing lol 😂..
I forced myself to keep at it until 3 then I was out of it in my head to stay, on leaving I popped down to see Tony to hand over my side bets he was on 7 carp fair play.
Don’t think I’ll be around now for a couple of weeks as work commitments -
the sheet will go up tho 👍🐟

It was nice to see the weights improving Jamie Case stole the show with a impressive weight & a touching comment he made on the internal HLS Wats App Blog thanking all the members that wished him well on his first win. Absolutely brilliant 😁👍🏻💪🎣

Well done to those Anglers..

Sedges Canal 12.05.24
Sedges Canal
Last minute booking on & wow I’m glad I did it was a really enjoyable day tbf..
Met in the cafe as usual then on to the draw that gave me peg 60, this was the 3rd time for me on this canal & I quite enjoy it.
On my left was George on my right Phil Dodd nice company for the day across I had Beardsy then Rob Dodd so plenty to watch & see what’s going on ?
It was always going to be tuff going spawning fish everywhere not ideal but it was what it is-so straight across about a foot off - a track rig & a edge rig & a couple of shallow rigs, George was straight into a nice bream & cracking on with the silvers & Phil D was on the traditional wag, Beardsy was loosing foul hookers down the edge & Rob was picking up fish as usual. I was getting small carp steadily but they were small. I backed off the spawning fish to try & build a swim of feeding fish that seemed to be working. I was rotating with this & the track whilst dribbling feed in the margin.
Everything was going well & getting better until doom struck some how my rig weak’nd & a carp finished it I went straight to the track rig & altered it to more a less the same but never is ??? That was that line done the wind picked up & then it was to hard across. The margin looked good plenty of fish showing but nothing apart from two small carp, George was steadily catching skimmers on & off then a big tench that he lost 😡 he was absolutely gutted & banged on about it for ages & more 🤪🤪
Well done to everyone on a hard but enjoyable day.
A bit of an unusual weekend this week I’ve got my first pairs match of the season & it’s at Dunwear Saturday on the main lake then hopefully Trinity Sunday.
Have a good week see you on the next 😁🎣

95.05.24 Avalon
Sorry it’s gone up so late but totally forgot about it, tbf I wouldn’t think there’s much to write about as I fished it on the Saturday with the Watchet Guys.
We had the roadside bank & Vic had his open on the other bank, the lake was nearly full & it fished rock hard, however, I did manage 4th on the Silvers with 6.7..
Vic’s open carried on after we left but they were also struggling Vic had 2 Carp Alvin Jones was still on 1 so that says it all.
Tight lines I’ll see you all soon not fishing this weekend as the wife is away with work so I’m dog sitting, maybe not such a bad thing with the heat there bound to be thinking if not spawning

Shiplate Hawthorn 28.04.24
Shiplate Hawthorn
You literally couldn’t write ✍️ it what a day of quite a disbelief & the excuses start lol 😂 na not excuses just rock hard…
I was really looking forward to this one after a disaster weekend on the match front from last week.
spoke to my good friend in the week as it’s his venue & he put me on the right lines & to be fair it seemed like a simple day with no confusion & my bait tray reflected just that. So to my left I had my usual neighbor on the venues Rob Eagle well that’s a bonus quality angler & I’d see exactly what’s going on plus Eric on the next to my left all good, to my right a good mate of mine Stan & today he’s on the pole aswell 👍🏻
Just down from him George then Tony F not that I could see that far…
So I had about 13.5 across nice & comfortable that was my meat line on the deck & a shallow rig just in case, 2X2 or 3 same depth in case they backed off or didn’t want to be that short - another meat line fed by the humble hand only, then a margin rig, pretty deep that 3.5ft that’s the only flat spot I could find fed with micro & bits of corn easy nice & simple..
The all in straight over no feed just the hooker stayed on this line on & off nearly all day on the deck & shallow gave me one & a couple foul hookers that fired off & came off, I had liner after liner so the shallow rig comes in they didn’t want it quite frustrating. Rob was in to a carp also Eric was on the long pole for nothing Stan was sat on the tip for nothing it was hard, however, the weather was being kind blowy but ok, I fed the short line now for a few hours again only foul hookers that came off.
Were in to part two of the day & absolutely nothing to shout about Rob had a couple of carp & a couple eals - Eals again … Eric wasn’t performing surprisingly as he had peg 1 empty but if he’s not catching it’s desperado’s, Stan was in the same boat as the rest of us nothing happening.
Now we’re starting to feel the pain I literally had 10 carp cruising in front of me so I sat there just waiting to mug one or two but soon as I put the pole out they disappeared. Rob getting desperate too & so is Eric at one point I’m sat there with my head in my hands ha…
So this one I’m going to keep quiet about as it might come good in the future aswell I’ve done something & thought I’ve sussed it I’ve got a run of carp well 4 to get me back in the game, that died don’t know why so I’m looking 👀 down the edge for nothing 4pm all out & thats that’s that. Stan changed his method on the tip to give him 5 - interesting so the four of us have our side bets I’m saying 24lb Stan saying 25lb Beardsy & Tony we don’t know but there in on the side bets I literally couldn’t be bothered to weigh in but I did to give me 3rd Tony took the side bets getting him 2nd well done buddy. I literally thought the other end were emptying it but not the case. Well done to Rob he took the Silvers with George just behind then Jamie 3rd. Fair play to Rob D on a great weight on the day to win the lake 😁💪🎣
Next week I’ve got a two dayer at Avalon Saturday with Watchet & Sunday HLS awsome looking forward to it see you there 😁🎣

Avalon 20.04.24
Avalon
It’s been quite a weird weekend on the bank I done Sedges Tile on Saturday with the Watchet guys that was strange - plenty of fish carp up on the island I drew 32 I don’t really rate that area ?? I also had 3 Eals that went for 12lb & just picking off carp here & there I couldn’t get them going on the Pellet Wag but I could see my mate Lee Merrit bagging on the Pellet Wag & sneaking a few Slapping..
Anyway on to Avalon drew 45 nice peg there was a horrible side wind that was proper cold 🥶 tho long story short it was far worse than Saturday a few on the tip went out 11m for absolutely nothing also done a short line for Jack - nothing.
I had Eric & Mike West to my left & they gave me neck ache, Jamie Case to my right.
I thought I’d go down the edge on the second part of the day for a good Bream I thought I’m got some here that was the it & that was the end, done a early pack up 2.45 for the pub 😎
Hawthorns this Sunday I’m hoping to start to rattle a few pellets in across for a few 😁🎣

Sedges
The weather was awsome prior to today even tho it was also going to be ok not quite T Shirt weather but dry - nice..
I met Beardsy Tony Fry & Dave Allen whilst we waited for the cafe to open, Beardsy & Tony were saying they wanted Peg 1 & gosh Tony drew it I got Peg 2 first time I’d ever been on that bank, me & Tony had the same idea with the Pellet Wag but I decided to leave mine in the bag until I saw Tony catching on it - it wasn’t long before I had in my hand. Wally was on 3 & catching Silvers steady.
I’d decided I was going for Carp & fish for Silvers in between.
It was quite a struggle tbf Tony wasn’t rocking the world infact no one was apart from Rob Dodd Kingy said he was into them from the off, talking of Kingy he rang me around 1pm he said he’d only had 2 Carp at that time I’d only had 3 & Tony had 3 or 4 Bagger Newell was steady but again not rocking it ???
I noticed myself Tony F & Kingy were doing much the same - switching all day. It was a nice day good company as always until next time tight lines. Well done to everyone it was a hard going day 😁🎣
