Steve Kings Write up from Sunday
Sedges Fishery,Brick lake
Today match was at the The Sedges ,Brick Lake. The weather started with an overcast sky, as the day progressed, the sun broke through, turning it into a beautiful, warm day,a perfect backdrop for a six-hour fishing match.
Peg 7 was my home for the day so my setup was comprehensive so set up a shallow rig, a deck rig, a pellet wag and a small feeder also a meat rig (Didn’t have a bite on the meat rig)I decided to feed 4mm pellets on the long pole, enhanced with a generous glug of smog bait additive to give them an extra edge. The goal was to keep the fish interested and to help my chances to catch as I thought pegs 10 and 11 would do well today
I kicked off the match with the feeder, bagging two fish while I primed the pellet line at 13 meters. To draw the fish to the surface, I continuously pinged pellets over the feeder. Despite these efforts, the first few hours proved challenging. The fish were not as responsive as I had hoped, and bites were few and far between.
As the hours ticked by, I managed to catch a few carp on the long pole and a couple more on the pellet waggler. However, it was a tough start, and the first half of the match felt like a grind. The turning point came when I switched to the shallow rig on the long pole. This change in strategy paid off and I had eight to nine carp over the next few hours, bringing a much-needed boost to my catch.
In the final stages, I reverted to the deck rig, which yielded another four carp. The last hour was slow, with only one carp making it to my net. Despite this, I was happy with my overall match as I had to work hard to keep the bite coming. I was very happy to win today with 121 pounds
Tony, fishing on peg 9, claimed second place with 88 pounds, while Brian on peg 10, took third with 82 pounds. The silvers competition was a tight race. Phil Dodd emerged victorious with 20 pounds, narrowly edging out Rob Eagle, who had 19 pounds 10 ounces, and Dave T who finished third with 19 pounds 8 ounces.
Reflecting on the match on my drive home, we’ll starting on the feeder while priming the pellet line was crucial. It allowed me to establish a steady start and keep my options open. Secondly, the consistent feeding of pellets over the feeder line played a significant role in drawing the fish up in the water, even though the response was slower than expected. The real game-changer was the decision to switch to a shallow rig on the long pole, which significantly increased my catch rate in the mid to late stages of the match.
The match at Brick Lake today was a day to be patience, The ever-changing weather and the initially slow bites to start with but persistent led to a rewarding finish. Winning with 121 pounds was the icing on the cake. And again a great day at the Sedges Fishery.
Next up for me is the charity match at Avalon and there are some great anglers going so looking forward to it …a good peg needed please .
