HLS 30/12/19 Sedges Tile lake

sedges 30/12/18

Well it was the last match of the 2018 season for the HLS guys and we had to do battle at this poplar Bridgwater venue and we were on tile lake (the one with the islands) and  I was praying for a peg on the near side (peg 30-40) only because I am never on this side I would like to fish it for a change …

The talk in the car park was that peg 35 has been winning a lot of the matches and when me and Dave did a walk around there was carp topping in this area  so a good draw was a must !! and the funny thing was that when me and Dave got to peg 21 I said to him that I didn't want it as I never see it frame in the winter !! then I drew it ten minutes later !!! then I was told it was the golden peg !!… no pressure then ..

so the pegging went like this :

21 S king (all round Mr nice guy... who draws good pegs and moans about them...a lot!)
23 Shane (Terry western bait company)
25 Tony N (Super Mario baits)
26 Stan (Radio active man)
28 Lord c (Octopussy)
30 Paul (Paxo baits)
31 Graham (In Somerset's top 10 rich list)
33 Rodger (Is Somerset's richest man and is keeping the UK car industry afloat single handed )
35 John B (Shepton silvers slayer)
36 Dave A (ipickupeverytime.co.uk)
38 Eric (Ninja)
40 George (Best silvers angler in the club)!!!! … his words not mine!!

So a few silvers boys on carp pegs.... and it seams the same guys drawing the same fantastic pegs again ..yes you Lord C!!! he ran to peg 28 and told me when he walked past that I would blank cos I was crap which upset me but that's what he is like …  I could see my mate Dave over on peg 36 smiling like a cat who had a full bowl of cream no make that 2 bowls ..so all to play for

So I went about doing what I do best and just set up loads ..2 tip rods, 3 pole rigs, and I  put in 2 keep nets …  I was feeling the vibe big time cos I could see George over on peg 40 and he is like my lucky charm as I do well every time he is next to me … but as there was that added pressure of the golden peg I had to just get my head down and fish my own match cos £550 is a lot of money to us poor sods from Frome (The poor part of Somerset)…..

One of the best … No.... the best silvers angler in the club giving me the 10 mile stare from peg 40...
It shows how good the modern phone is cos he was the other side of the lake and he is only 3 foot tall.

Anyway I could see Dave A catching well from peg 36 but they looked small (silvers) and I heard that Paul (Paxo baits) was catching well on peg 30 (again silvers) ..so skipped the silvers rig ..then the jungle drums told me that Rodger and Eric had a few carp (pegs 33/38) .and I seen Tony getting a few carp so I had to work hard today but I had few in the last hour …

We started the scales on my peg (21) and I had 4-0 of silvers and 41-12 of carp for a total of 45-12..next up was the younger western aka Shane on peg 23 who had 10-1 then Tony N on peg 25 had 28-6 ..Radio active man was next up on peg 26  and ad 4-1 of silvers … Then it was that man Martin aka Lord C on peg 28 ………… a great peg …………….who...…………..had...……….a...……… DNW  and boy did his brother laugh....Anyway we had all round Mr nice guy next on peg 30 Paul who had a great net on a hard day from okish peg and plonked on 21-4 of  silvers …I asked which ground baits he used and he just winked .. mmm he back on it boys ..

Paul's ground bait.. mixed with sensas lake 50/50..works a treat …

those skimmers love  sage and onion …..(well done mate)

Over to the near side and we started with graham on peg 31 who 12-12 of silvers then the richest man in Somerset was next on  peg 33 who had 26-7...next up on peg 35 was Shepton silvers ace who had 8-12 of silvers and said he got them in the last few hours ….Then Dave A on peg 36 who had 13-8 of silvers and 7-4 of carp for 20-12...Eric on peg 38 had a bad day !! and put on 19-6 … and the last man was George who had a hard day catching white bait and put on 9-11...but he said the peg  was full of carp ???

So the winners today :

1st overall Steve King (I moan about my peg … a lot) peg 21 45-12
2nd overall Tony N (Mario baits) peg 25 28-6

1st silvers Paul  (Paxo baits) peg 30 21-4
2nd silvers Dave (ipickupeverytime.co.uk) peg 36 13-8

So a nice pick up for me today (£550 golden peg) and it is nice to end the year with a win ..at last … my son said I should put a photo of me with my winning net but I couldn't find one so he took this one today at a cafĂ© and told me to up load it …looking good for 27...

my wife is so lucky

Next Sunday are at Trinity Waters so please book in with Phil …. also the AGM is this Friday at the 37 club … good luck with that !!

See you Sunday and happy  2019 ..

They had 12 fishing this match and speaking to martin he said that peg 17 as got a tree gone into the lake and looking at it Tony N got his pinkies on this peg and fished for carp and done a cracking job as he won !!!

Not sure who did the pegging but the silvers was won from peg 11 but he did have 7 spare pegs ??

HLS fur and feather match 16/12/18

Emerald lakes HLS  fur and feather 16/12/18

Well it was that time of the year again and the club had our fur and feather match, we had 3 lakes booked at Emerald pools .. Jade, Ruby, and Emerald and I think most of us wanted to be on Jade lake as the silver fishing is great on this lake ..so  a good draw was a must .

We all met for breakfast and draw  at the 37 club and I did a super pool for those who wanted to enter it and I think most did !!

The club has spent twice a much this year on prizes and we had 6 hampers up for grabs (2 for each lake ..1st overall and 1st silvers) and a fishing voucher for every member .. and I would like Tony fry who has sorted out the vouchers and also Danny and George for pegging out the venue on a wet Saturday afternoon ..thanks guys .

We had 27 booked into the match so we put 9 on each lake which was about right .. so after some grub we got the draw under way and I put my mitts in the bucket and I had peg 10 on Emerald looking back at me …. and as I wanted to fish for silvers I was a bit gutted cos it's a carp peg !!! oh well water pigs it is then...

My home for the day peg 10

So I parked up and dropped my gear off and I was thinking I might have a chance here as I have seen this peg do well in the past but looking around I could see Bill to my left and Eric my right . and Tony N  and Dave bull were on the island pegs...

WOW it must xmas cos Eric on peg 1 has got his pole out !!!

My plan was silvers but I had to change my plans when I got this peg ..so I set up a dobbing rig to fish over to the reeds and a pellet rig to fish a foot away from the reeds/bridge ..and was hoping to catch well on the bridge but I never had a bite here all day .also I never had a bite on the dobbing bread rig … so my last rig had to work  and I had a few carp on it but I lost 3 in a row and that was it for me I never had a bite for the rest of the day ..gutted !! I think I had 10 carp  by 11.30 and was thinking I was going to do a big weight then bugger all for the rest of the match … I could see Danny and Dave catching silvers over the far side an ad that feeling I was going backwards with every hour passing ..and 3 o'clock couldn't come fast enough ..

At 3 o'clock  we called the all out and started the scales on peg 1 with Eric who had 1-5 of white bait and a few carp for 8-2 for a total of 9-7...then D.T and Shane  both  had D.N.W's (and i wanted one of those pegs for the silvers) .. then Danny on peg 5 had 8-7 of silvers and 5-9 of carp for a total of 14-0 next up was Dave Allen on peg 6  who 10-8 of silvers and a carp for a total of 14-7 then over onto our side of the lake and Bill the paste on peg 7 had a few carp for 14-6 then Dave bull on peg 8 had a D.N.W and tony next door on peg 9 had 15-0 and I was thinking oh shit …. then I was last to weigh in on our lake and put on 25-11 ...so I had a good 1 hour or so ..

I had won our lake and won a nice hamper and my good mate Dave Allen had won the silvers and also won a nice hamper ..happy days

Over on Jade lake Dave Harvey won with 35.6 and Mike won the silvers with 15-2..so well done to both.

And the last lake was Ruby … Who was won by all round Mr nice guy Paul who had 33-8 and the silvers was won by Lord C with 6-0 …. ouch !! So again well done to both and again both got a nice hamper

SO well done to the winners and also well done to the super pools winners who were

1st overall Dave Harvey
2nd Paul
1st silvers Mike
2nd silvers Ross..

Anyway we went back to the 37 club for food and a pint ..and I would like to thank the club for paying for this ..we had some sad news in that Tony Fry has said he will not be doing the chairman's  job next year and again I would like to thank him for his effort and time he has put in and trust me it is a thankless job !! I think going forward the club should be ran without a chairman and treasurer and we should pay all the money out that we take on the day ..I am sure that Shane would be happy  to keep doing the money side of things on a Sunday but you need to ask him ?..also I still think that it should be a £10 joining fee and this could be used for our away day to Todbar manor ?? I would be happy to help out with the scales .. and I am sure Phil would be happy to keep doing the booking in ?? again you need to ask him ..

We have a good club here and it would be a real shame if it went Pete tong! it seams like it has been the mid week lot v's the Sunday lot !! which is a real shame and I hold my hand up I was pissed of with how it went last year But I think the club has to come first and at the end of the day its  only fishing ..and we all love this sport ..

So again I would be happy to do the scales /golden peg unless somebody else wants to do it ??.. But I will be giving up doing the committee as of now as I get fed up with it (thankless task) and it's a nightmare doing meeting in Bridgewater which is a 70 mile round trip.. I have no ill feeling with anyone but that's how I feel about it, and a new year and new start... and I want to just fish with the club and not get moaned at every week .. like I said we have a great bunch of lads in the club and I for one want to see it go on for years to come ..

So there will be a AGM at the 37 club on the 4/1/18 and you should go but I wont be there as I cant offer anything to the club ..well only doing the scales and blog and golden peg but again if anyone else wants to do this then you can lastly Tony F has sorted out the venues for next year (below) and again thankyou tony for this …

I hope you all have a great Christmas and look forward to fishing with you all next year  … ho ho ho ..

HLS Angling Dad's Army Wednesday 19th December Avalon

After a solid day's rain on Tuesday we did not know what to expect, but it turned out to be a warm and sunny day, and a joy to be on the bank.

I was not the first to arrive, and when I did I found there was just nine of the lads on parade.  We had Ron looking after our needs and helping with the peg selection, including the Golden Peg number eight.   .

I sorted the money and paid Avalon.   It was then onto the draw.   The Golden peg was drawn by Ninja.   Bill the Paste was on nine, and the thought was, that the overall would be decided between them.   I drew eleven next to Boy George.   It was then onto Mustard, Tungsten and the draw specialist Sparky.

For the match we had been gifted two vouchers by Steve from Somerset Angling, we used them as part of our pools.   All lads asked me to thank Steve and the business for their generosity, which was much appreciated.

It was time for all in;  George was catching whitebait from the off.  I took a little longer to get going, but we both had plenty of bites, but a lack of quality.   We had lots of chat, some about fishing, but mostly about meeting up at the pub on Christmas Day for our annual couple of pints before lunch.

I could only see George, so I couldn't see how the match was going.  I knew I needed to play catch up with the bloke telling lies beside me, but it was not to be.

I shouted all out and Ron started the weigh with Geoff who scaled 7lbs 9os of silvers, he had caught a couple of carp, but didn't weigh them.   Dave T was next, he had pushed him with 6lbs 14ozs, so that was the silvers taken care of.

Mustard was next in line, he had 24lbs plus, mainly carp, this was good for the overall.   George had
5lbs 10ozs and my nugget.   Ninja had 18lbs 8ozs which was second overall.

As you can see from the result sheet it was a tough but most enjoyable day.

This year Dad's Army has had lots of close fought battles in both silvers and overall categories , and as we have some new recruits, the competition is a lot stronger, this will hopefully make some of us improve.

The new Wednesday fixture list is circulating at the moment, so after a seasonal break we start             again on Wednesday 2nd January 2019 visiting Sedges fishing on Tile.

We wish our friends with not the best of health a better new year.   We miss you just as much as you miss us.   I will keep pestering you with phone calls, as I am sure our other friends will.

Dad's Army would like to say to all our members, families, and every one who reads our blogs,                                      and hopefully enjoys the nonsense!!

THE BEST OF EVERYTHING FOR THE SEASON AND THE NEW YEAR

                                    Have a good one

                                                    Bob

Thursday 13 December 2018

HLS Angling Wednesday 12th December Emeralds Speci. Lake

We were at Emeralds today, the weather, contrary to all the forecasts, was good.   There is lots of protection here from what could be a very cold wind.  I arrived early, but not before Tivi, we had to wait for Alan to open up the gates.

My first job was to peg the lake, I was expecting twelve today, and the lads did not let me down.   Boy George was warning it may not produce the great results of our last visit, but I believed we would still catch plenty of fish.

Into the draw bag, peg nine was the Golden Peg, which was drawn by Bend It for the third week on the trot; would he win it again was the question, if he had it would have been a record.    Sparky drew one, and The Nasty Old Sheriff two, so that was first and second silvers taken care of!!!    Ninja and Bill the Paste  drew well, so that could have been the match sewn up, but time would tell.    George brought some party poppers to start and end the match.   That was a laugh, it was more fizz than pop.

At the start of the match I decided to fish just outside some inviting rushes to my left, fishing caster over maggot.   An hour later I had two razers in the net.   Change of tactics; five sections into open water with the same bait, and soon it was better results.   At the end I had five scaleys and silvers for 39lbs 13 ozs.

I had been watching others catching fish all day, and it looked like my choice of winner  could prove to be correct.    It was time for the moment of truth, Mustard was in charge of the scales and I had the paperwork.  Danny was hobbling around looking like that chap with the back from Notre Dame, Quasi Modo,  sorry if the spellings wrong,     In spite of that, it didn't stop him catching fish.

Congratulations to Sparky on Saturday his wedding day, we all wish him well.  He said he hoped to be fishing next Wednesday?? before going on his honeymoon.     This made my wife smile, a touch of the deja vou for her

Back to the weigh in, it was Sparky 38lbs13ozs , and Danny 34lbs 3ozs for the silvers.  Ninja was top overall with 51lbs 1oz.   George scraped in beating Bill for second with 45lbs3ozs of mostly silvers.

Great venue, good match, good company, and plenty of craic.   That must be Dad's Army on a Wednesday.

We  are visiting Avalon next week, which is the last before Christmas.. Then a two week break,                                        so let's enjoy it, and have a good turn out.

HLS Trinity waters 9/12/18

Trinity waters 9/12/18 Woodland lake

Well after the strong winds and rain on Saturday night I was hoping to wake up Sunday to find it had gone .um no ! it was still going for it at 6 o'clock Sunday morning in Frome  and I was thinking it could be a tough day on Woodlands as it lacks cover and as I have said before Bridgewater is always windy .. anyway  I met Dave and Lord C at Street mac ds and the wind was still strong but the rain had gone which was a bonus …

We made are way to Bridgewater and onto to this  Fantastic venue and I had a look at the lake and it looked like the Amazon river it was really coloured and I was thinking that the wind we have had over the last few day have churned it up and I have never seen it like this before.

While looking at the lake it was obvious that pegs 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,,9 had all the shelter and looked nice and the rest had waves ..so I wanted peg 2 or 6 just to have a days fishing out of the wind .. I paid all my pools to Shane and had a look at his new seat box and I must say it is probably the best looking seat box out there  ..and those Rive boxes are well made .. Then he was telling me he also brought one of the new Matrix side trays which look great and looks very well made ..and then lastly he put on his new red and black Gore-Tex ..and I was thinking he looks the part ..and at this point I was thinking he looks like someone else in the club ? …

Anyway while I am thinking about it the "Guru tart" is selling his Guru stealth seat box and he asked me is I wanted it but I declined it as I have a great seat box … mine looks just like Shanes ??? He said he wants £150 for it so first come and all that ..please speak to him if you want it

So into the tub of dreams and I pull out peg 2 … happy day!!! and then opened up my eyes and peg 14 was looking at me ..bugger ..wind it was then

peg 14 ..

Set up today was just 2 tips rods,a margin rig and a rig for out in the open water for the silvers  ..I did set the pole for 13 meters  but I just couldn't hold it as the wind was strong and it was gusting big time  so I came back to 10 meters and that was just about the limit that I could hold … I had Tony N on peg 15 and The Guru tart on peg 12 and I could see my new mate on peg 17 …  and god did he look good on his new box!!!

So at he all in I put in 3 balls of Thatcher's ground bait and went out on the 20 meter line with maggot and a cage feeder and didn't have a bite within 30 minutes!! so onto the pole line and it was like holding Phil the "guru tart" back from Somerset angling !! hard work... and I mean hard work!! but I did have a few skimmers .. looking around  I didn't see anyone catch it was so hard .. but at the end a few carp had been caught and I could see the silver boys catching white bait in the margins …

Both Tony's started the scales on peg 28 with George (best silvers angler in the club ) who had 2 lumps in the margin and some bits for 29-0 ..then D.T on peg 26 had more bits for 2-11 yes 2-11...then 4 DNW'S .then I had 7-10 of silvers !!! Then Phil "the guru tart"  Blanked !! ..Dave on peg 10 had 14-7 and then john on peg 8 had 4-12 of silvers .. Lord C on peg 6 went home which is rare !!!and graham on peg 2 had one carp for 7-11and the last 2 also had a DNW's  (tony fry aka silver fox and Brian  )

So a very hard day but the best silvers angler in the club won !! so dreams do come true!!! well done mate …

The winners :

1st overall George (best silvers angler in the club) on peg 28 29-0
2nd overall Dave Allen peg 10 14-7
3rd overall Graham peg 2 7-11

1st silvers S king peg 14 7-10
2nd silvers John peg 8 4-12
3rd silvers D.T peg 26 2-11 yes 2-11!!

And this summer seams a long time ago now !!! but it was a close match

Right next weekend is the HLS fur and feather match at Emerald pool's and I think we have 30 booked in so we have 3 lakes which will be JADE,RUBY? (the one behind emerald) and EMERALD …

The club has spent twice as much this year on prizes and there will be 6 hampers up for grabs yes 6 !! so this year each overall and silvers winner will win a hamper .. and the rest of use will get a great prize ..  I would like to thank Tony fry...Martin..Phil..Shane who have give up there free time to sort out he prizes also I would like to thank Danny and George who will be pegging out the lakes on Saturday .. again giving up there time for us so please don't moan about your peg it is what it is ..

There will breakfast at the 37 club from 7 o'clock and the draw will be at 8 o'clock again at the 37 club ..the match will be from 10-3 and then the results will be back at the 37 club  with a buffet paid by the club .

I will be running a super pools on the day which will be £5 if you want to do this then please find me in the morning .. I'm thinking about paying the top 2 overall and also the top 2 silvers overall ?? but this might  change due to numbers ..

ALSO and this is big news …. Phil "the guru tart" will be donating £500 for the biggest fish which I think is a nice touch … thanks mate you are a star...

see you there ..

HLS Angling Dad's Army Wednesday 5th December Trinity Woodlands

What  a day!!!!   The good part was,   it was dry when we were setting up, and again when packing up, but during the match RAIN and more RAIN.

Twelve of Dad's Army arrived for a real trial by combat, and there were no hot drinks today as Misha was on the school run.   We heard Lily really likes school.

Back to business which did not take long.   At the draw Bend It got the Golden Peg again ,he won last weeks, today it was number 27.  The lads were up to the usual, taking the proverbial with no one exe
Everyone wanted a rear bank draw out of the wind, there are no prizes guessing where I drew.  I was on peg 9 on the far bank, sandwiched between Tivi and Tungsten.

I was time for the all in, we fished until 15-00 hours today.   As the match progressed it became obvious at our end of the lake fish were a rarity.   Eventually Tivi had one, but he denied seeing a bite?   It took two and a half hours before my first bite which was a whole two ounces.   It was really tough, and the weather horrendous, I was thinking a warm bar and a pint might be preferable, but if I did that, the guys might all follow, and I would be in the chair.!!

When the Nasty Old Sheriff me the weigh in sheet it looked like the top end of the lake fished a different match to us.   Where did Bill the Paste find five carp for an outstanding  40lbs 5ozs?  I was impressed.     There were three good silver weights on the near bank,;  congratulations to Bend It who came out top again with 10lbs 1ozs of silvers, plus 11lbs 2ozs of those vermin.

When I left the car park, last as usual, my thoughts were,  all the Dad's Army were winners as despite the conditions we all enjoyed a days fishing together as friends.   Roll on next Wednesday for a repeat performance no matter the conditions.

Emeralds next Wednesday where there is a top limit of fourteen.  Don't get disappointed.

Sunday 02-12-18 - Sedges Tile Lake

Greetings from the Grinch...... Bah Humbug and all that.....

It's was lovely to escape the seasons madness for a few hours and visit the lovely Sedges fishery where we are warmly welcomed and served with hot drinks and hopefully a good days fishing.

Last week it was Brick lake, so we would see if Tile was more productive today. It was very mild and many were casting off layers of clothing. I was fishing for silvers and fancied the far bank, pegs 21 to 30.

The bucket of dreams gave me peg 21 so I was happy. I had Steve King to my left on 23 and then George (elephant foot) Fletcher next to him. They kept up a running commentary for most of the day. Especially when Steve netted more and bigger skimmers than George.

At my peg, I set up a waggler rod, tip rod with small feeder, 13m pole line and 6m pole line. Bait today was a small amount of Black Magic Gold groundbait, dead pinkies, live pinkies, white and red maggots and casters.
I started on the waggler at about 18m and got bites straight away from small skimmers. The 13m pole line also gave me bites but no fish of any size. I kept changing between these lines and eventually found some decent skimmers. I had one bite on the 6m line from a good skimmer and I didn't bother with the tip rod.

I had bites throughout the match but they were not as often as Steve on 23 and his fish tended to be better. It looked like he was fishing 16m and 8m. I knew how George was doing because he went quiet meaning he was concentrating. But he wasn't doing as well as Kingy.
I couldn't see or hear anyone else but word got about that Dave Allen was doing well on 28.

And so at the all out the scales started with me and I put a meager 9-10 on them.

The winners were, paying out only 1st and 2nd, today.....

Overall
1st - Martin Western, peg 30 with 46-3
2nd - Tony Newell, peg 35 with 37-10

Silvers
1st - Dave Allen, peg 28 with 39-14
2nd - Steve King, peg 23 with 21-7

Next Sunday is at Trinity Woodlands, so book in with Phil the Guru Tart.
