HLS Angling - Trinity Waters - 28.04.19

Todays gathering was at one of the most popular lakes of the club anglers of Woodlands Lake at Trinity Waters. With the temperatures of the previous days over the Easter Bank holiday being warm but then with storm Hannah encroaching on us for the Saturday, no one knew how it would fish. It was previously fishing very well but the water colour had changed significantly during the week.

I met with a few regulars and had a chin wag and catch up and hen to my surprise, Somerset Angling had sent in their representative of Simon Garbutt who had taken time out of fishing the canals and maybe his ploy was to generate a bit more business and line Mr Kedges pocket with more silver.

The main talk was about the recent dads army trip t ROF ponds which didn't apparently fish too well and Eric and George made it very clear of their disappointment. I did ask the question of them both if they had forgotten to take their happy pills but they informed me that they had - god knows how grumpy they could really get then.

Detall was sat on the seat in deep thought (as per below picture), I could only think that he was contemplating how on earth he managed to turn up with unclean bib and brace or how he was going to clean it for the next time. " I don't know Detall - Standards are Slipping" He did suddenly perk up when Roger called him Shane and for a few moments they exchanged verbal's but then kissed and made up.

I had my nice cuppa and paid my fees and the golden peg was drawn which was peg nos 6. Now this has been producing the goods with some big weights over the past few weeks, whoever was to pick this would have a good chance if fished correctly.

20 members in for todays match so another good turn out.

Onto the draw -

Peg nos

2 - Sausage
6 - Simon Garbutt
7 - Dettal
8 - Lord C
9 - Guru Tart
10 - Tax Man Brian
12 - Mario Tony
14 - Dave Allen
16 - Nice Guy Rich
17 - Eric
20 - Sharp Shopper Shane
21 - Mutant George
22 - Tungsten Dave
23 - Graham
24 - Roger
26 - John Wolstencroft - (Crofty) from now on
27 - Steve Warren - (Rabbit) from now on
29 - Queenie
30 - Danny
31 - Me

So the Garbutt had Golden peg and there were a few mumblings around the lake mainly from the Tart and normal verbal abuse from Queenie. Sausage wasn't happy that he had chosen a well known carp peg and Shane was confident in the corner with it fishing well in the week.

I had Danny next to me on my right and no one to my left, I was glad I had ear plugs as Queenie on the next peg to Danny just doesn't stop talking. Directly opposite I had the Garbutt who had a grin bigger than a Cheshire tom cat who had all the cream.

So the hooter sounded and I couldn't see too much going around me although Danny had a few small blades and Sausage out on the tip had a nice skimmer. Queenie was talking and giving his normal abuse so he was obviously catching a few. It took an hour for me to get catching but then I caught all day. The only trouble, was the standard of skimmers were small and not the normal decent stamp with Danny also having the same problem but he also lost a few god uns. Then for 5 minutes I thought I had gone deaf as queenie stopped talking, that normally means he not catching and concentrating harder.

Detall in peg 7 then had a nice Golden Tench of 3-4lb - hooked in the mouth this time, but it was the Garutt that was catching regular in the margins.

So the all out was called and the results as follows

Overall

1st  - Simon Garbutt - 72lb - 09 oz
2nd - Steve King      - 56lb - 10 oz
3rd - Brian                - 48lb - 03 oz

Silvers

1st - Dave Allen       - 27lb - 03 oz
2nd - Sausage           - 18lb - 10 oz
3rd - Danny              - 17lb - 14 oz

Great fishing from Dave for his haul of silvers and for Simon to win from the golden peg. Apparently he's treating people to free bait this week and would be good to see him again on Sunday.

We are at Summerhayes on Sunday - lake to be confirmed on the day. Please contact Phil to book your place.

HLS Angling Dad's Army Wednesday 24th April R.O.F. Club Borrow Ponds

We were guests of the R.O.F. club today, so just a peaceful parade at Borrow Ponds.  There were sixteen of us fishing,  this included two guests who are members of the  R.O.F. club.  This was the first visit for most of us, and impressions were very favourable.   It is  very peaceful, the car parking easy, and the swims have adequate space.

Mike the Beaker selected the pegs and everything for the draw.  I collected the Coin of the Realm, and sorted the business, so we were ready for the lucky dip.

There were no complaints as we don't know the water, so yet more peace!! Could this job be getting better?   Mustard got the Golden Peg number 23;   I drew 12, which I was told generally does well. as everybody made their way to their swims it started to rain, I suppose everything can't be perfect.  After the heatwave over Easter we got a cold monsoon, and I was not clothed for it BRR!

I wanted to fish my favourite caster over ground bait at a 12 metre long  line, and at the all in it was not long before I was catching nice roach and rudd.   Across from me WO11 Bill had a tench, and Bend It lost one in the rushes.   Richie, the only other I could see had a tench and some skimmers, plus a small pike, which is unusual to be seen in fisheries.

I will not dwell on the match, so it was onto the weigh in.  What a treat, no great weights of carp to hump, this is a silvers venue.  Although the weights were not great, everyone agreed it had been a good experience, except for the dreadful weather!!!

The two guests framed, but The Nasty Old Sheriff took first with 32lbs 13ozs of mostly quality bream, so there went another of my nuggets into his deep pockets.   Well done Danny, but don't push friendship too far.

We return here on June 19th, and I am looking forward to this visit, having had work experience, I hope to do better.   The full results below.

Next Wednesday Avalon gets our attention,.   So let's have a good one.

                    Until then;

HLS Angling Dad's Army Wednesday 17th April Shiplate Main

We were at Shiplate today, and after a foggy drive and lots of chat, the sun shone through to reveal this extremely well cared for fishery.

We had eleven well turned out men on parade, all looking forward to sunshine and fish.   After parting with their lolly they were keen to go.    Steve and Carole were in charge, doing their social bit, sorting out swims and the Golden Peg which was four.

On to the draw, The Nasty Old Sheriff drew his usual flyer peg 15, Boy George go his record breaking peg 14, so it would be goodbye to another nugget, but I was not moaning!!   Last out of the hat I got peg 1, this meant I could watch the above mentioned roughs squabble over my nugget  GRR!

At ten o'clock, with the sun still shining, I shouted all in   I started plumbing up and found it shallow all the way and flat.    My intention was to fish sweetcorn today, but after one and a half hours without a bite, so not having time to visit Mr Kedge this week, had not my reliable stand by casters, it had to be the few remaining two week old maggots.   I struggled on;  I could see  Sausage catching a few fish, George had his tongue out, and Danny was coughing, so I knew I was in trouble.   But it's only a game, and I had plenty of company, namely, oversexed geese, ducks, moorhens and coots, all as common as muck, having it away just in front of me.   It was nice to see some goslings, which were the first of the year for me.   Who cares about the lack of fish, it was just great to be here.

It was time for the all out, the weigh in showed some good silver fishing, but a lack of carp, I expect they were thinking about the same thing the birds were up to?

Bend It on the wag topped everyone with 40lbs 3ozs of silvers, plus a carp 10bs 9ozs, the lad's on fire, who will stop him?   The full results are below.

Today we fished our first pairs match, which meant a BLIND DRAW, this caused a bit of questioning of  others who were so called mates.   It was won by Tivi and that slippery George.  Well done DAVE.   It's good to try something different, and we shall have another mid summer.

Next week again another first, when we visit Borrow Ponds.   This is mainly a silvers venue, but it's good trying something new, even Ninja has agreed to have  a go!!   I hope for a good turn out, and the "Dog and Bone" to ring PLEASE.

                                                         Bob (Adjutant)

P.S.   Dad's Army fished the Angling Times Super Cup first round against Watchet and Exeter last Saturday.   The venue was Trinity Woodlands, and thanks to some good performances by George, Danny, and Tony, we are now into the next round.   Well done the team!!

HLS Angling - Summerhayes 14.04.19

Todays venue was Summerhayes Fisheries on Sellicks Pond. On arrival the car park was very full with 3 matches booked in. A few regulars were missing this week due to Easter half term but there were some new faces to make up the numbers.

A few people approached me and congratulated me on last weeks win and also the blog so thank you all.

I off loaded my gear and got a couple of keep nets when I had a quick chat to Bill the Paste who said I should get 3 nets. I thought that was a good sign to come as Bill had fished here numerous times and probably knows better than most how it would perform. However I thought that due to some temperature drop and the cold Easterly wind that 3 net were optimistic so I just chose the 2.

The wind was not overly strong, but the forecast was for some gusts, and for those fishing on the bank with their back to the motorway, were going to be more comfortable than those with the wind In their faces.

So the draw for the golden peg was made and this week was on peg 12 which can be a good carp peg although the favoured peg here is peg 1.

With 19 members attending today the draw was made as follows

Peg

1 - Nick Selway
3 - Tony Fry
4 - John Bradford
5 - Eric
6 - Tax Man Brian
7 - Dettal
9 - Lord C
10 - Me
11 - Guru Tart
12 - Danny
13 - Sharp Shopper Shane
14 - Brummy Steve
15 - Mutant George
16 - John Wolstencroft
18 - Tungsten Dave
19 - Paul Lock
20- Graham
22 - Dick Hurford
23 - Mario Tony

So my guest either side of me today were the Guru Tart and to my right Lord C. With the company that I had it was a given that if no fish were caught I was going t get earache and to be honest I haven't laughed so much in a while.

So we started to set up our equipment and today with the wind behind me I was happy not to set up the rod but a couple of lines targeting mainly carp. Lord C wanted to target silvers but not the best peg for that and Guru Tart was happy to catch anything.

The last time out at Avalon a couple of weeks ago the Guru Tart wanted some sweet corn so I obliged, however it took him 2 weeks to crow his crop to return to me as I was going to fish corn in the margins, after moaning at me he finally gave in and returned the corn.  The cheeky sod than asked if I had any Tipex, now me being a nice guy, I had given my pot to Dettal and told him that Detall had some. Lord C obliged as well and the Tart gratefully took this.

With 10 mins to go and most people set up,Tony Fry was having a walk with Lord C and was speaking with the Tart when the Tart threw in a hand full of expanders to his right margin. As you can imagine the cries of "Cheat", "Pre-Baiting" , "abusing his vice Chair position" echoed around the lake. The response was "I was just seeing if they floated or sank and that I wont be fishing that margin anyway"

So the all in hooter went and straight across with a small cad pot of micros and a 8mm banded pellet, a few knocks and a few strikes but nothing. Then the Tart struck and thick elastic came out of the pole on his 13m line - he thought he was in, Lord C looked over and the Tart was pulling thinking he was well into a lump - oh and how he was, a great lump of reed. He pulled and pulled then the inevitable happened and he lost his rig and the normal cussing and swearing followed with Lord C and myself chuckling.

Lord C then caught a good skimmer and then I had a carp of a pound and the cries of that's how you do it were shouted in the direction of the Tart. With that the Tart got out his margin rig and went to his left, I balled in some ground bait on my left margin by a nice clump of reed and then went back out on the long line. Nothing happening to went on my 9m line ad picked up a few silvers with Lord C picking up carp on his long line.

Then outrage as the Tart started to fish to his right margin which he had pre-baited before the all in and I had just fed, the cries of cheat and disqualification were shouted. He struck and again elastic came out of the pole and again he hooked a lump of weed, I'm sorry but I couldn't stop laughing as he snapped yet another rig. Then more outrage as he then caught 2 little pasties on my margin line and more shouts of "Cheat" and "Nige you should report him to the chairman"

In total he lost 4 rigs on that day so I txt Steve Kedge and told him to put up the cost of his rigs up on Monday as the Tart will be in and need to buy at least 4.

The going was hard but then Lord C shouted to me that Dettal was in to a bream and landed an ass hooked 4lb fish.

With the tart still tying new rigs and plummeting every time, I asked him why he didn't mark his pole and apparently Lord C had given him invisible marker - a lesson here to you Phil -  ensure you are prepared.

So fishing not great but the banter was good and was glad when the all out was called.

HLS Angling - Avalon 08.04.19

This weeks venue was at the Avalon Fishery. Throughout the week the weather was warming and seemed to be promising; however on Thursday evening and the early hours of Friday it got much colder and rained heavily which wasn't perfect leading towards the weekend.

When I got to the venue I was astounded to see so many anglers there and the best turn out of the year so far. There were a few faces today that would normally fish the Dads Army Group on Wednesdays and I'm guessing that as not many turned up at Summerhays on Wednesday they were getting their fix by attending the Sunday session.

I un-packed my gear from the car and went to look at the water. There was a fair chop on water with the wind blowing straight down the lake so presentation was going to be difficult. The water colour had everyone saying that it was going to be difficult, it was a milky grey colour and not looking its best.

I paid my fees to Sharp Shopper Shane who was basking in the bright sunshine but he didn't have much to say, maybe he was keeping quiet in-case he lost his teeth again. No one had any updates on Kev from last weeks cameo so we can only presume he's still drying out.

The golden peg was drawn and today it was peg 20 - the favoured end of the lake for Silvers or Carp.

The draw was made as follows -

1 - Lord C
4 - Queenie
5 - Dave Allen
6 - Me
7 - Dettal
10 - Steve Warn
11 - Guru Tart
12 - Mutant George
14 - Sharp Shopper Shane
16 - Dan
17 - Paul
19 - Graham
20 - John Wolstencroft
21 - J Brad
23 - Danny
24 - Eric
27 - P Lock
28 - Tony Fry
29 - R Coles
30 - Last Hour Dave
32 - Mario Tony

The favoured end was those pegs in the late teens and twenties and with Eric pulling 24 we thought he would be in with a good chance of taking the fees.

I was feeling the pressure today as to my left I had Dettal  and to my right I had Dave Allen and to his right was Queenie. Even if we didn't catch today there was certainly going to plenty verbal abuse and I had my ear plugs at the ready.  Detall had the edge of an island to go for and I had the rest to target.

I had spent some money this week on upping the gear on my rigs and reels due to losing too many fish over previous weeks and getting some sound advice from Mutant George and Lord C but I wasn't really comfortable with heavier lines but I needed to do something.

I set up  a rig for the 13m line straight in front and a margin line to my right, but the wind was increasing so I set up the tip to fish about 4-6 feet from the island. There wasn't many fish seen topping and us along pegs 1 -7 which are not normally the best of pegs were muttering our concerns of how its going to feel like a long day.

So the hooter went and I cupped in some ground bait on the 13m line hoping that the wind was going to drop. I put an a 15g bomb on the tip with a banded 8mm pellet and fished to the island. As per previous weeks it wasn't long before someone caught and I think Steve Warn was first in. Shortly after my tip went around and I successfully bought in a common of about 10lb. Feed some 4+6mm pellets lose and cast out again and within minutes my tip went around again, and after a bit of a fight managed to net another common of about 6lb. Now the last time I fished here I had 2 quick carp then couldn't catch again so I was not hedging my bets. Out again and anther fish which took me into Dettal swim and what he thought was a bite and his elastic going out actually was my fish  - ooops sorry Dettal - to be fair he was ok about it after firing a few expletives at me. So after an hour I had about 22lb fish. I put another ball of ground bait out but still fished the tip. Then it went quiet for an hour and a large carp swirled over my ground bait so I thought Id continue to loose feed pellets but have a dangle over the ground bait line. I couldn't get the presentation right and after 5 minutes gave upon that idea so back on the tip.

Looking down the bank after hearing a snap I could see the Guru tart at he rear of the bank pulling his rod hard. Looked like he was squirrel hunting again. Apparently he cast into the tree on his island and ended up snapping the end of his cheap Guru rod

The rest of the match was very fruitful for me but for those good anglers around me were struggling and I must say fair play to Dave Allen as he kept at the 13m line and landed a few skimmers and had a good ending. I landed a bream of 5lb 8 oz  my only silver of the day and then a fish a cast until then the all out.

For me it was a good day and the heavier lines proved successful. Tip fishing is not my favourite as it can be a bit boring; however when the fish are on it, its very fruitful and enjoyable, but not quite as good as seeing the elastic stretch form the end of your pole.

Looks like George is bang in on form again with another silvers master class and his all important £1 from Danny.

So onto the weigh in

Overall

1st - (Me) Nigel     - 89lb - 11oz
2nd - P Lock          - 53lb - 12oz
3rd - Mario Tony   - 29lb - 3oz

Silvers

1st -  Mutant George - 19lb - 5oz
2nd - Paul                  - 17lb - 7oz
3rd - Dave Allen       - 13lb - 10oz

Sorry no pictures today as my arm was aching too much

Well done to everyone who attended and a big congratulations to me for my first ever match win.

Next week we are on Sellicks at Summerhayes. Please remember that you either go over the railway line by the Bot and Anchor pub or down to Colley Lane in Bridgewater and over the new bridge.

Please remember to text Phil if you are attending to avoid disappointment of being turned away.

HLS Dad's Army Wednesday 3rd April Summerhays Sellicks

We were at Summerhays Sellicks today, but I'm sorry to say it was a poor turnout for Dad's Army.  Just not good enough lads, must "put oneself out" comes to mind!!

The weather was good to start, but it gradually deteriorated as the day passed.  Peter was good for hot drinks and all the business was completed in quick time.   Onto the draw, the last peg was 23 and the Golden one, more like tin, as it was won last week, and of course it was mine

Off to our pegs, I was happy with my nice large platform.  On my right was Tungsten and next on George, we all fished for silvers.

At the all in I put in a cup of ground bait topped with 2mm pellets and caster.   Then out with five sections of pole and a single maggot on size 20 hook   It was not long before a small skimmer entered the net...I then tried caster and the fish got bigger.   After an hour it was caster and red maggot; I was having a good day!

My neighbors were struggling a bit and saying nasty things about my parentage, which made me more happy, as during the day I netted 31lbs 8ozs of silvers, plus a couple of carp.

My net contained mostly skimmers, with three nice crucians, two tench, and some roach and rudd. That meant my second week running I collected nuggets from Nasty Old Sheriff and George.  If the weather improves I could take to this fishing.

All out and everyone weighed, the average weight being 35lbs, which is good for any venue, especially considering the conditions.   The Wizard came out top overall with 49lbs, and myself won silvers with 31lbs 8os.

Many thanks to those who fished, and to Peter and Summerhays for a very productive day.

Next Wednesday we fish Woodlands Trinity, our first visit since the work on the far bank.
                                This could be interesting.

HLS Angling Club - Landsend Fishery - Sunday 31st March 2019

This weeks trip was to the picturesque venue of Landsend Fishery in Wedmore. The week leading up to today was warm and sunny and the optimism was high with the warming temperatures and potential warming of the water.

I went for a wander around the lake and with very little breeze, but a bit cooler it still looked really good with the odd fish topping here and there.

This week turned out to be an eventual occasions for many as you will see throughout the report

18 people were signed up for today including a rare outing for Chairman Kev.

There's been some money spent of late with a few people showing off their new poles, however the cleanliness of their holdalls, were seriously let down by the terrifying conditions of their seat boxes which had Dettal in melt down mode.

The Guru tart turned up with a nice CO-OP pastry in hand, but in 1 bite the pastry split and the contents fell on the floor, there is a photo of the contents later at the end of the blog - you can make your own mind up on what you think was in there. The pastry was tossed away and fell only inches from Dettals van - he went from white as a sheet in seeing the un-cleansed seat boxes to near green with the thought of his van been being tarnished with dog poo - I mean pastry filling.

Mario Tony bought a bundle of old pole sections so people could help themselves if needed, an unwarranted cry from the normal rowdy members of "Danny can make a brand new pole from those" bought a chuckle or 10.

So the golden peg was drawn and out popped peg nos 24 - this was a corner peg and favoured for its habitant of carp, so who ever was to draw this would potentially be in with a very good shout.

The draw was made and was as follows

Peg

1 - Nice Guy Rich
2 - Chairman Kev
3 - Danny
5 - John Wall
6 - Steve warren
8  - Dave Allen
9 - Last Hour Dave
11 - Tony Fry
13 - Guru Tart
14 - Mutant George
15 - Lord C
16 - Eric
17 - Me
18 - Mike Davis
19 - Mario Tony
21 - Queenie
22 - Sharp Shopper Shane
24 - Dettal

For today I had Eric and Mike Davis either side of me, with Mike generally fishing for silvers and Eric all out attack for those carp. I was going to fish at 16m across to the island but the wind just started to get up and I decided to fish at 11.5m and a small margin rig which paid off when those gusts blew later in the day.

So the all in whistle was blown and as per previous weeks someone had caught the very first cast - this week was Tony Fry, with the Guru tart fishing directly opposite him he wasn't too complimentary about Tony's good start. I don't know whether he managed to land it or not.

The Guru tart then hooked a carp which took his rig and all we heard was him  crying in his hands about losing his float, I believe later he also snapped a pole section but that was not confirmed.

I could Steve Warren and John on the opposite side of the lake catching a few carp whilst myself and Mike were still waiting for our first bites. Eric, fishing the margins then started to land a few. After 2 hours I had my first fish and a skimmer to about a pound followed by another. Mike was still blanking but then switched to the margins and started catching. It was really hard work getting silvers to bite but those pesky carp were munching. I was fortunate or not ,which ever way you look at it, that Eric was giving me a full blown concert with his take on some very old tunes. It was fun listening to him making up random words and sentences which is by far better than listing to the rather vocal Queenie, that I could hear from a 1/4 of a mile away. The songs then turned into expletives when into a large looking carp and Eric dancing around his platform, his top kit snapped - ( I don't think Mario Tony supplied this from his array of spare sections )- and then consequently hook pulled the fish.

At around 1 o'clock plenty of people were catching carp but silvers was still hard going then Mike now fishing in the margins took a nice bream of 3-4lb but then started catching carp  again throughout the day. Then there was the biggest splash of the day and all anglers looked up to see that Chairman Kev had taken a tumble into the drink, not only himself but most of his equipment as well. To their credit Nice Guy Rich, Danny, Steve and John went to his rescue so well done to those men and I hope that Kev is ok and drying out. How he did it I'm not sure but rumour as it that a pole section had gone in and he leant over to retrieve it and over did it.

Around me I could elastic coming out from every where from most anglers and then I landed a 6lb carp before landing a 4lb bream. Its strange that just when you think you get them going it dies again leaving you scratching your head. Mike was still doing well next to me but a thought for Mario Tony as with his new pole he hooked 6 carp and only landed 1 with his rigs giving way -  a cry from Queenie of  - "you should have spent the money on new rigs rather than that pole" echoed around the lake, most people would have probably given up and went home however he continued and landed about 6 carp after lunch. Don't you just love the sympathy.

It was reported after the match that Golden peg 24 had produced but unfortunately all 10 had either hook pulled or rigs smashed so unfortunately for Shaun didn't get his mitts on the money.

So the all out cry and the end of the match.

Is that really a meat filling?
