HL Angling Dad's Army Wednesday 29th August Trinity Woodlands

There was just a little mizzle in the air when thirteen fit men of Dad's Army were preparing to assault Trinity Woodlands.   The expectations were high for a successful attack, with plenty of good fish  held captive by four o'clock.

Tom made us welcome with hot drinks.  The pegs were selected and the business concluded, so it was on with the draw.   The Golden Peg was 22, and Mustard got lucky.   The great thing about this lake, is that you can win from any peg,  so there is generally no complaints about the draw.

I drew 29 just across the bridge, just a short walk with hopefully the sun on my back. later.   Spod and Flo were to my right, with an empty peg on my left.   I gave Flo her dog biscuit while assessing my swim deciding where to fish.   I could see movement at 10-12 metres, so I decided just one swim, feed and fish corn over ground bait, concentrating on the larger version of skimmer.

I am getting really lazy, setting up just one rig to fish 2-4 inches over depth with some distance between float and elastic as there was quite a bit of wind blowing.

At 10 o'clock the rain had gone and we were all in.   Within half an hour Tungsten had landed two carp and lost two, and The Nasty Old Sheriff was catching silvers at a good rate, I thought my nugget looked to be spent.  Spod started getting a few carp and he reckoned bruv Tonto was in for another whipping.   On peg fifteen the Professor was practicing his GREEK in preparation for his holiday!! when he was smashed by another big scaley.

The day improved for me, I was catching a few, but did not give myself much chance, but I was having a really good day's fishing.  It was time for all out, and with regret I had to stop fishing, just when the fish were coming good.

Dan and I met in the car park, and made our way to peg seven to Garters DNW, Tonto was next with 32lbs.   Big Bird also DNW then Tungsten with 29lbs 15ozs of silvers, and just those two early carp.   Onto the Nasty old Sheriff, who as usual was lying through his teeth as the scales read 32lbs 2ozs of silvers and 10lbs 7ozs of carp.   The Professor weighed 26lbs 2ozs of carp , then it was the Golden Peg Mustard who got 42lbs 8ozs, not good enough.   Sausage had 11lbs 7ozs of silvers, and Baz was at his small fish act, accumulating a great bag of silvers for 29lbs 7ozs.  Spod, father of Flo and brother of Tonto weighed 80lbs 4ozs.

I was next, I was a couple of fish short with 28lbs 13ozs of silvers, plus three carp 20lbs 9ozs.  Then it was to the big boys.   First it was Bill The Paste who had amassed 135lbs of mostly scaleys, and that left just Ninja who had struck again with 162lbs 11ozs.

What a great silvers contest, with lots of good weights and  the overall going close.   Our thanks to Trinity; what a well kept and stocked fishery.    Well done the lads for making it a great social day.

Full results below.

The latest on Boy George:  the operation was successful, and
the bandages will be coming off soon.  He should be back in a few weeks.

Next week we are at Avalon.   There's room for all.

HLS Angling Dad's Army Wednesday 22nd August Sedges Brick

Dad's Army were at Sedges Brick today,  the lads were drinking hot drinks and giving it the old verbal; what a lot of old rubbish they gab on about, a sensible person listening would be totally confused.

Nineteen were chomping at the bit, so I extracted their coin and got on with the draw.   Peg eight was the Golden Peg, which was drawn by Big Bird, this could have been a nice pay day fishing for silvers, especially as brothers Tonto and Spod, (assisted by Flo the dog) on either side, who are both carp anglers.    Ninja drew the flier eleven, so the carp boys thought they were fishing for second.  The boys think he is a lucky ??? nothing printable.

I was thinking it was a day's pleasure fishing, having drawn peg twenty, which is a renowned scaley peg!!  I just don't carry the gear to cope.   I was looking at up to ten hooks, and probably a couple of rigs lost.   Next on my right was Tungsten, with the Nasty Old Sheriff on eighteen fishing maggot, I wondered?

Across the lake I could see Monkey our guest and Brad, who are both silver anglers.   All in, and I was in a relaxed mode fishing top four in front, caster and corn as hook bait, and a ground bait mix, but not to much.   To my surprise a couple of minutes in and a skimmer is leaping around this was followed by a few roach and some more skimmers.   My optimism was short lived when I espied Danny landing quality fish,  then Dave T started catching, and just to rub it in the carp arrived and my gear disappeared.

Everyone was catching, and I thought the weigh in could be interesting, and maybe close.   Danny and I packed up quickly and headed for peg one, which was Monkey who weighed 9lbs 9ozs of silvers.   He said he had enjoyed his day and the craic with the lads   Spod on peg seven was smiling he scaled 84lbs, which made his bruv cry.  Rob on the Golden Peg weighed 28lbs 5ozs of silvers, and was looking good.   Now it was that time when anybody with a bad back wished he wasn't there!!!  Ninja had three nets and was smirking.   I got the abacus ready and away we went.  It was six weighs with the end product 193lbs 12ozs.   I think we need a handicap system.    Tony Newell said he had only 100lbs, but weighed 108lbs 9ozs for second.   Bend It could not keep a straight face, so we knew it was good, he had 37lbs 2ozs of silvers,  beating Danny who had a very good 30lbs 4ozs.

Thanks to Sedges for the good fishing, and a bigger thanks to you troopers for a very good turnout

Our next match is Trinity Woodlands, a great venue and plenty of room.

                                          Phone please

Trinity waters woodlands lake 19/8/18

Woodlands lake 19/8/2018

We had 18 booked into this match today  so we all had a bit of room and with lord C back from his holiday we all had are work cut out !!!!! also George (best silvers angler in the club ) is still not well so someone else might win the silvers ( get well soon mate)

I was told that is was fishing hard this week but I think this makes it a closer match so  I wanted a nice draw please!!

We got to the car park with a hour to spare so me and lord C had a walk around the lake and I said to martin that I would like pegs 2,15,17,19,20,33  … but we would have to wait for the draw to see what we all get ….

Anyway I paid my pools to Shane and had a chat with some of the guys then Shaun turned up with his clean kit and I was thinking that he is class on this water and we would all be playing for 2nd place....

The golden peg today was peg 10 and Lord C got his fingers on it … I got the shortest walk in the lake in the form of peg 29 !!! so another carp day for me I had Eric next door on peg 30 and Dick on peg 27 so a bit of room

my view all day !!!

My plan was to fish up in the water so a slapping rig was set up also a deck rig a paste rig and lastly a margin rig … a pellet wag (never used) and a pellet feeder ..

At the all in I started on the deck rig and it just sat there … and it took 30 minutes to get my  first carp and looking around it looked like it was fishing hard so when I got another one 10 minutes later I was thinking just keep this up and I should be ok ..then my bite stop (I only had 2 in the first hour) and my wheels had fell of my truck big time I just couldn't get a bite .. Eric next door was in the same boat as me and the only person I could see bagging was the Guru tart on peg 15 who was catching big time but I think it was the trees "Muppet" !

The guru tart on the best peg in Somerset !!!

Half way into the match and my mate Eric next door started to get a few on his feeder and I was thinking he going to beat me again today and with that I started to get a few on the pole … Then I lost all my rig ,elastic on a fish which pissed me off so I had to set up again with a stronger elastic which wasn't ideal but need must …

With a hour to go I went on the paste line and never looked back as I put 50 lbs in my net with some right lumps so !!!  I could see Lord C  catching well in the last hour also so he might be the main man today and Eric next door  had a  few  in the last few hours and he is hard to beat …

So with the all out  I packed up and went to help lord C and Danny with the scales and we started on peg 2 with Colin who had 13-9 then next up it was Brain (HMRC baits) on peg 6 who had 49-0 then Kev on peg 7 had 3 lumps for 30-15 !!! John was next on peg 9 and put on 14-14 of silvers then it was Lord C (octopussy baits) ……… Drum roll please …….. well he had 10-4 of silvers and 58-2 of carp for a total of 68-6 but would he win the golden peg ??? ….

Ross was next on peg 12 and he was telling us about the golden peg he won on the river Brue and he won £500 with 2-10 … and was asked to never come back so that why he fishes with us !!! anyway he had 11-4 of silver..... Then it was the big gun Mr guru who had been catching all day but the only thing he had was 75-3 of leaves/roots/trees and a lack of fish "Muppet" then it was Danny (Pinocchio baits) on peg 19 and boy was his nose getting bigger by the minute !!! he said I might have a few pound !! um well he had 19-8 of silvers then rob next door had 21-7 of silvers and 24-6 of carp for a total of 45-13 ….Shane was next on peg 20 and had 6-14 of silvers then peg 23,24,26 all chucked back... Dick on peg 27 had a total of 36-14  I had 111-13 and Eric on peg 30 had a 93-12 so a close battle in the end … D.T on peg 32 had 23-6  an lastly it was Shaun on peg 33 who had won the cleanest kit of the day prize but also chucked back …

so the winners are:

1st overall S king peg 29 111-13
2nd overall Eric peg 30 93-12
3rd overall Lord c (octopussy baits) peg 10 68-6

1st silvers Rob peg 19 21-7
2nd silvers Danny (Pinocchio baits) peg 17 19-8
3rd silvers John peg 9 14-14

Right next week the club is at Summerhayes on longs lake which is fishing  it head off… so please book in with Phil ..

HLS Angling Dad's Army Wednesday 15th August Avalon

We were at Avalon today with Ron in charge to look after our needs   It was a breezy day, blowing straight up the lake from peg 1 to 23;  the good side was, no rain, and it was warm.

There were thirteen well turned out men of Dad's Army, all with plenty of chat, so the atmosphere was great.   The biggest topic of conversation was the absence of Boy George; his eyes are in a bad way.   I phoned him on Wednesday night,  he said he went straight to the hospital after the match, and he had been given an appointment for the next day.   I visited him on Thursday, when he opened the door he was dressed in a robe, I thought he must be a sheik or  a rabbi, then he spoke (you all right Bob)    Anyway the update is, he is waiting for a date to have an operation.   He is driving his wife Pauline mad, because he is bored.  I believe a little prayer for the hospital staff could be in order.

Back to our match, after all the business was sorted, it was onto the draw, with  9 the Golden Peg, this was drawn by Wo2 Bill.   Recently the silvers have come from the middle pegs.   I was left with 17 next to Baz on my right.   Big Bird at end peg 21, and The Nasty Old Sheriff in 10, most had an empty peg on one side, so there was plenty of room.

Baz and I both fish for silvers, we were tackling it very differently today.   Baz was fishing up in the water with caster and maggot for roach and rudd, while I was fishing with corn and ground bait for the larger bream and skimmers.  Baz had a very busy day, he had 27lbs of whitebait at the weigh, making my eight fish for 16lbs 4ozs look small, but this did  include a 2lb golden tench, well worth coming for.

The silver weights were not that great, but Rob on peg 21 hauled in 142lbs 12oz, beating Ninja who had 91lbs 13ozs.    Everyone caught fish, and it was another great day out with the lads.

Next Wednesday we visit Sedges Brick, so plenty of fish.

                                                Make it ring

Avalon 12/8/2018 - Moors lake

Avalon moors lake 12/8/2018
We had 2 guests with us today John and Steve so we had a total of 16 booked in ...on a personal note I love this venue as it is full of fish and only 35 minute from Frome so it's perfect for me  ...
Me and Dave got there early and had a walk around the lake and I said to Dave  I wanted peg 23 as it looked like it had a few carp in it and with the wind blowing into this corner I expected it to do well ...
Anyway I paid my pools to Shane then dipped my nets then  Eric asked if peg 7 could be taken out as it  has a snag over towards the island  so we put peg 8 in and left peg 7 out ..the only problem with
doing this is that now peg 5 would have loads of room ..but that's life then at the draw  Eric got his mitts on  peg 5 which is a real cracker of a peg ... he would fall in shit and still smell of roses !!!
The pegs in today were 1,3,4,5,8,9,10,12,13,16,17,18,19,20,21,23 (all the left hand side)
The golden peg today was peg 9 and I got it ...so it would be safe today ...
When I got to my peg I was thinking that the only way I could win the golden peg today was to fish for silvers so I mixed up some ground bait and opened up some corn and also I had some worms ...so I set up 2 silvers rigs one for 11 meters and one for 4 meters ..
But as I had 30 minutes until the "all in " I also set up a pellet wag and a feeder just in case the silvers didn't want to play !!!
I had Kev on peg 8 and Mike on peg 10 so some good old chat today with Mike telling me about his lake at the 37 club  and Kev telling me about his teaching day......
At the all in I put 3 balls on the 11 meter line laced with corn and 1 ball on the 4 meter line ....I started fishing on the 11 meter line an the first fish was a 10lbs carp !!! then a 5 lbs carp which snapped my pole float ..grrrrr so I had to set up again and this time I put on a bigger hook then went back out on the 11 meter line and had 2 bream so I was thinking here we go only for the wheels to fall clean off my party ..I just couldn't get a bite and Mike next door was in the same boat as me
So reluctantly I went on the pellet wag and had a few carp on this but and with half the match gone I made a decision to go for  carp so I got of may arse and set up a paste rig and bin the silvers line and put a pot of 4mm pellets ..... thinking I might get a few bream on this but also I would catch a few carp as well . At this point  I could see my mate Eric catching well on peg 5 so game on !!
I started to catch a few carp on the paste and with 1.5 hours left I was starting to think I might catch up Eric on peg 5 and then for 45 minutes I was bagging  and then I made a school boy error as I hooked a big carp which was great but as  I got it into the landing net and it didn't like me so jumped back out and it so bolted under the platform and out the other side only for my top kit to explode into 4 bits and trash my rig ...doh!
duck tape anyone!!!!
so for the last 45 minutes I didn't have a carp  which was a bit of a gutter ..
At the all out I packed up and was thinking I should had gone for carp from the off but that's fishing ...
The scales started on peg 23 with tony fry who let us all have a chance today and put on 63-7,the guru tart on peg 21 was next and had 40-1 then it was Danny (Pinocchio baits) on peg 20 who had 16-1 of silvers and 22-1 of water pigs for a total 38-2 ,Steve was next on peg 19 and had 78-4 to go into the lead ,Dave on peg 18 had 13-10 of silvers ,Shane on peg 17 had a DNW then it was onto that man Tony N who had 15-8 of silvers ..next up it was Rob on peg 13 who had a cracking net of silvers and  plonked on 32-2 of silvers ....next up it was Roger (Hovis baits) on peg 12 and he had 40-7 of carp...then  Mike on peg 10 put on 13 of silvers, I had 113-10  from peg 9 ..next up was Kev on peg 8 had 25-8 ..Then Eric who had peg 5 put on 124-7 to go into the lead (git) ..on peg 4 Paul (Paxo baits) chucked back then it was D.T on peg 3 who had 36-1 and last to weigh in was John on peg 1 who had 59-3 ....
So the winners are
1st overall Eric peg 5 124-7
2nd overall S King peg 9 113-10
3rd overall Steve W peg 19 78-4
1st silvers Rob peg 13 32-2
2nd silvers Danny (Pinocchio baits) peg 20 16-1
3rd silvers Tony N peg 16 15-8
Next week we are at trinity waters so please book in with the guru tart

HLS ANGLING DAD's ARMY

August 1st Shiplate  I was on holiday for this match  Results below

This week it was back to as near normal as these lads get.  It was Summerhays Longs with twelve on parade.   After a week of peace, it was back to barracking, and getting my parentage questioned  I really missed  it.

Peter in charge!! so it was nuff jokes, but good drinks and bacon butties, for them that wanted. I selected the pegs, took the dosh, then the problem of trying to get these pieces of old flatulence to put their paws into the bucket.   The professor was in his usual Wednesday drying out state after over  indulgence, and  Boy George was looking for a white stick, saying his eyes had packed up.  Someone said it was due to self abusing when he was young.!!

Anyway the draw was completed, and Tungsten got the silvers flyer peg 35.  I got the golden peg 31 and was happy.    All in and I had fish most of the day. fishing just top sections, as suggested by Peter, who also said I would avoid carp this way.  I must say he treats the truth a bit rough, but I did have a good days fishing.

I was using caster as my main hook bait feeding same with miserly amounts of ground bait.   After six hours I had 13lb 2ozs of silvers, which was good enough for second, and 20lbs 4ozs of carp.  It was the coarse specialists who came good, with Ninja winning overall with 185lbs3ozs of his scaly friends, and The Nasty Old Sheriff winning silver with 25lbs 3ozs.  Well done to you both, just another begrudged nugget handed over.

Tungsten on the silvers peg weighed 112lbs of carp?  The match produced a lot of good weights, as the result sheet will show.

It rained today and got quite cold?  just thought it was worth a mention.

Next week we visit Avalon,  and rumour has it, it's fishing its nuts off!!

Don't miss out get on the phone.

                                            Bob

Summerhayes 5/8/18

Summerhayes 5/8/19 longs lake

looking up from peg 37

looking at golden peg 1

It looked like it was going to be another hot day so I stopped off on my way  to the lakes to get some more water ..and with a lack of shade I made sure I put some sun factor 30 on !!!

When I got to the car park it looked empty and tony fry (silver fox) said that we might have only 14 !! so there was going to be plenty of room ..

So I collected 3 nets hoping for a day bagging and then that man Eric also collected 3 nets !! mm game on !

Then Danny (Pinocchio baits) asked  all members if he could put a bench between  pegs 34 and 35 as he has drew it that many time this year ….And today was the same story ….peg 34 … and I had bad boy George next to me moaning all day about it  !!!!!

The new bench for pegs 34-35
And the plaque is inscribed with
"A place close to my heart as I win all the hls silver pools from here  "
" Donated by Danny @ Pinocchio baits"

Anyway in the end we only had 12 which is a crap turn out but still all to play for ….. the golden peg today was peg 1 and looking at the pegs selected today I was thinking who ever got there fingers  on it should do well as they had 8 peg empty to there left and 3 to there right !!
So into the bucket of dreams and I pull out peg 19 !!! oh joy I was thinking as I would like a change of scenery as I have been in this area 6 times in a row now....

looking around I had roger( Hovis baits) next door on peg 17 and George (best silvers angler in the club) moaning about Danny on peg 23 …

I set a 2 paste rigs and a banded pellet rig  also a tip rod  and that was it for me . At the all in I started over to the mud bank and had to wait for 15 minutes to get my first bite and  thinking about it  I am sure  it was a bit shallow and with the sun out  I'm sure  the pole was spooking them!!!! So out on the tip rod and started catching well …looking around I could just see the back of Stan on peg 10 and I could see his landing net going in and out so he was doing well and also I could also see Eric on peg 28 doing well...

I had a great last hour fishing the paste down to my left and I had a better size carp so I thought I might have a chance …..

Danny and Tony N started the scales on peg 1 with Shane and he put on 89-0 to go into the lead and at this point he was winning the golden peg !!!! then a delay as they had to wait for the bus to turn up as it was such a long walk to the next peg !!!!!!!!! next it was Stan on peg 10 and he had 100-11 to knock Shane of top spot !!! then onto peg 12 who had D.T on it and he had 61-10, Tony N on peg 13 went for silvers and had 13-9, Colin on peg 15 had 41-7 , Roger (Hovis baits) on peg 17  had 37-15, me on peg 19 had 209-5 , George (best silvers angler in the club) had 14-14 of silvers and 28-13 for a total of 43-11 then it was onto that man Eric on peg 28 who had 179-11,Graham on peg 32 had 36-14 and then Danny (Pinocchio baits) who had peg 34 again!! and  put on 21-11 of silvers and 22-13 of carp for a total of 44-8 …. and then it was the silver fox on peg 37 who had 69-12 …

So a hot day again and it  fished well, but saying that we all had a bit of room... well Shane did on peg 1 !!!!

1st overall Steve King peg 19 209-5
2nd overall Eric peg 28 179-11

1st silvers Danny (Pinocchio baits) peg 34 21-11
2nd silvers George (best silvers angler in the club) peg 23 14-4
Next week we are at Avalon so please book in with the guru tart , tony fry … have a good week .
