Wednesday 30th December 2015 - Viaduct Campbell

What a day!!! 50mph winds and rain you do not want to remember.   Eleven very brave lads of Dads Army knowing what to expect, turned out to tackle a very difficult match.   Badger Steve opened the cafe room, and sorted out the peg numbers for the club.  I marked off the names, took the money, then made the draw, asking forgiveness and a low number draw please.

My prayer was answered, I drew peg 112, which was a bit exposed but the wind was on my back.   Nothing fancy today; fished short, feed steady, and hope for skimmers and tench; neither species decided to visit my swim, just a fair amount of small roach and some large carp, which in the process of landing of these I managed to loose a No.3 pole section in the lake.   Danny, being an expert retriever, found and recovered it at the end of the match.   Thank you very much Danny.

At 3-00 o'clock I shouted all out, and the weighing began.   Roger first at peg 110 with 89lbs of  carp, a good start, but not good enough as you will see on the complete results sheet at the end.

Unfortunately there was a downside to what I thought was a good day, showing the spirit and strength of HLS in really adverse conditions.    The most important consideration of all anglers, whether match or pleasure fishing, should be the fish.   Not for the first time we had an overloaded keepnet.   The fishery rules are very clear about this, and when Steve phoned and gave me very severe earache, I assured him this would not happen again.   His response was,  that re-occurrence would mean our club would not be welcome at Viaducts, a sentiment which in his position I must endorse.  "NO ONE WANTS DEAD FISH"   Let's resolve and put this one behind us at the AGM on Friday 8th January .

Next its Sedges Brick where we have a full lake with reserves, then at Emeralds on Wednesday next week.

Looking forward to the week ahead

Sunday 27th December 2015 - Trinity Woodlands

On what started out as a very rainy day 22 anglers arrived and disembarked with their gear.  The chat was good, and the weather improved on what turned out to be a good competition.

It was good to see Micha, who recently became a mum for the first time, having given birth to a healthy girl; her name is Lily.   Micha made the tea,  I took the money and prepared tickets for the draw.   I drew peg 9, which is middle of the far bank,  which is  OK.  I feel the venue is very fair, you  can win from any peg.   My mind was set on an easy match, so nothing fancy;  two rigs, one four sections in front, the other shallower for the margin to my left.   Horny tooted at 10-00, and the session began.   Two small balls of green and micro laced with squats in front, with hand fed castor and maggot to the left.   Fishing dead depth I soon caught some reasonable Roach, which got smaller as time passed, then a bonus Tench of 2lbs.   The day progressed with plenty of bites, which, at the weigh in, produced 12lbs 4ozs of silvers; enough to win the silvers, with not a Carp in sight!!

The guys packed up, and Mike Davis, Danny, and myself completed the weigh in.   The results below.

Next Wednesday we are at VIADUCTS Campbell 9-00 draw

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR

The feedback from Sundays Fur and Feather was 100% good and positive.  A credit to you all that our Club is thriving.

I wish you all the seasons best wishes, and success for the coming year, when  I hope to share your friendship and company at our matches.

Tight lines,

Our AGM is at 7-30 pm on Friday 8th January 2016 at the 37 Club, come and have  your say,

Wednesday 23rd December 2015 - Avalon Fisheries

Final head count at muster was 20,  all raring to do their duty on a venue we had not fished for a while.  After a cold night, and with a chill wind blowing straight down the lake, expectations were not high.   Vic sorted the pegs 1 to 23, and the draw was made.   The lads made their way to their positions, and readied for the off.   After three trips from the car park to my peg 21, I was feeling k'kd. so when I bellowed all in at 10-00 I was nowhere near ready.    I decided to start on the maggot feeder and the 11 metre pole line as the wind was too strong for this old soldier to manage further out.    After 21/2 hours and 1/2lb of small fish, I put all that gear to one side, and fished the margin.   This produced some more very small fish, and a very large tench which I lost at the net, I guess back to the drawing board!!!

The weigh in was done by Vic, and the weights told the story;  a struggle from start to finish.

MATCH WEDNESDAY 30TH DECEMBER AT VIADUCTS CAMPBELL  DRAW 09-00

Monday 21 December 2015

Sunday 20th December 2015 - Xmas Fur and Feather at Emerald Pools

What a great day for our club of six months.  From 07-00am until 18-30pm, with not a moan or  complaint to be heard (we gagged George)  The lads started arriving at the 37 Club, where the majority took advantage of a very good breakfast   King Steve was collecting and sorting the optional pool money, a good job well done, everything in envelopes and labelled, just like you would expect from a postie.   Tony treasure collected the £5 peg fees, and Danny sat, pen poised, ready to take down the names when the draw was made.  34  entered and 34 turned out, 34 names beside numbers, a small miracle.

So off to the lakes for setting up gear, mixing bait and all the other tasks that fishing entails.  I drew peg 33 which is in front of the chalets, we have never fished these pegs before, so decisions needed to be  made about where to fish.   I decided not to cross to the the island, as it meant breaking down three times with the chalet behind me;  so it was 10 metres in front and the margins.

Horny toots and we got started.  I was doing what I enjoy best, catching roach, but very slowly until midday when slow became stop.   On the day a lot of fish were caught, with the best weights coming from Ruby lake, but I think everyone caught fish.

At the weigh in:-
                           Section A         1st Overall                Tony Fry                           23lbs 8ozs
                                                  1st Silvers                 Dave Tunstall                      6lbs 0ozs

                           Section B         1st Overall                Tony Newall                      46lbs 12ozs
                                                  1st Silvers                 Simon Garbutt                  14lbs  12ozs

                           Section C         1st Overall                Mike Davies                       35lbs 0ozs
                                                  1st Silvers                 Martin Western                      4lbs 0ozs
                                                                                  Bob Pascoe                         4lbs 0ozs

We then went back to the 37 Club for beer, buffet, and rewards for our endeavors, everyone gets lucky.   We had three smashing hampers prepared by Gail Fry as prizes for the section winners, and three tables full of other goodies which Marilyn Gail and Ross had set up while we fished.

After the prizes came the draw for prizes donated to the club, and I would mention Steve Kedge (Somerset Angling) and Steve the Badger (Viaducts Fishery)

This Sunday was not about fishing but friendship, not winning but enjoying our sport with our mates.

I am looking forward to the next match on Wednesday 23rd December at Avalon 9-00 draw.

Wednesday 16th December 2015 - Sedges Tile Lake

Sixteen of the old contemptibles of Dads Army turned up to fish what turned out to be a fair match.       As everyone was early, the draw was brought forward to 08-45,and we fished from 09-45 to 1500
I drew peg 23, and knew from previous results it would be difficult to compete with the lads in the thirties, and  so it turned out.     Top silvers Mike (bend it like Becket) Bendel won with 8lbs 2ozs on peg 35.   The overall went to the Welsh Mercenary Brian Chivers with 66lbs 0ozs, 2nd overall was the oldest swinger in town John Newall with  52lbs 12 ozs.

Well done everyone on a pleasant December days fishing.

Next up is our Christmas Fur and Feather on Sunday 20th.   We meet at the 37 Club at 07-15 for breakfast etc     The draw will be at 08-30, and then on to Emerald Pools to start fishing at 10-00 until 15-00
After the weigh in back to the 37 Club  for drinks, a buffet, prizes, and pools.

Next Wednesday Avalon 09-00 draw

Sunday 13th December 2015 - Summerhayes Sellicks lake

A small turnout for what was a difficult match, with fish very hard to come by.   The draw was made at 08-45, and we fished from  09-45 until 15-00.   I drew peg 44, next to King Steve on peg 2,who proceeded to catch small fish from the off.   It took me a good hour before my float disappeared catching a small roach, soon to be followed by a hand sized carp; thank you fish.

The most fancied pegs were 12 to 15,  and so it turned out  At the weigh in Dave Allen on peg 12 weighed in  23lbs 8ozs, to win from the Welsh Mercenary Brian with 20lbs 4ozs.    The silvers was won by Bolton George his weight 4lbs 12ozs (real weight 17stone)

Most important date to remember   AGM FRIDAY 8th JANUARY  at  730pm

Thursday 10 December 2015

Wednesday 9th December 2015 - Shiplate Hawthorns

On a cold but pleasant morning 15 men of Dads Army assembled for another match; 15 being the maximum for the lake.

The lads unpacked their gear, and exchanged their usual verbal abuse, then made their way to the shed for the draw, after-which there were some expected moans from quarters not unexpected, these moaners will be put on report.

Again as all were early we advanced the start to 9-45 fishing to 15-00,more grunts!  I drew peg 9 and had no complaints.   Danny was on 10 so I had to work hard.   After shouting out" All In" the match began.   I decided on no ground bait just loose feed with a single maggot on a 20 hook,it wasn't long before I was catching small roach.   As the match progressed it was obvious big weights were not the order of the day, but my fish kept coming slowly with the occasional bonus of a crucian or skimmer.   On a very pleasant day for December I weighed in a respectable 12lbs 1ozs of silvers, which was well in front of Danny's 6lbs.

The rest of the results were as follows:-   Pete (Robot Duck) Cooke 1st Overall  just beating Bolton George who said he had lost five fish, very careless I thought!!!  The full results are below.

Also........

A working party of 3 Danny, George and myself went to Emeralds to make sure you "Lads were all comfy" on the Xmas match. After 3 hours George and I were knackered, and had to restrain Danny who was acting like a demented wasp with his chainsaw.   I reckon GREENPEACE should keep an eye on Danny; he's definitely a threat to the environment.   Danny also took to the water and was much more easy to control .  A good job done.

                               Keep   Fishing,

Thursday 3 December 2015

Wednesday 2nd December 2015 - Viaduct Spring lake

Another good muster on a very good day weatherwise, I can't believe it's December.  The final count was 18 fine bodied men all geared up, paid up and impatient to make the draw   After the usual banter with Badger Steve and the new streamline Nick Collins, I relieved Steve of the peg numbers, and business commenced.  The draw was made; I drew peg 3, which I was informed should fish well.  Because we had not fished Spring before, there were no complaints from anyone except Bolton George, there's a surprise!!!

I set up two rigs, one for out in front, the other for inside shallow, hoping for the resident perch.  Horney Beards tooted to start us going.   I potted in a small amount of bait and started lowering my rig which continued under the water, when I lifted, a small roach appeared out of the depths, and promptly fell off to go back home.   This was how my day continued, drop offs, snags, and primarily interfering ducks.   I thought the ducks and myself were becoming a personal thing,  I baited up the ducks dived in and ate it, no contest, the ducks won every time!!  I had a very frustrating day, but at the weigh in had a respectable 13lbs 11ozs of silvers.

Bolton George, from his rubbish peg won with 21lbs 2ozs fishing top two, not bad.   Danny was second with 19lbs 2ozs.   Surprisingly there was only a single carp caught all day, and this was half and hour before the end by a very layed back Martin Coombs.

Everyone enjoyed their fishing to various degrees, and the results were quite close, the full results can be seen below as usual.

Next Wednesday we are fishing at Shiplate on Hawthorns, only 15 to fish, so get in quickly!!!

                                            Look forward,

                                                      Chair Bob
