HLS Angling Dad's Army Wednesday 29th May Shiplate Main Lake

Shiplate Main Lake was the venue for Dad's Army this week, and twelve well equipped men? arrived for muster .    The weather forecast was not good, but that didn't stop the chat, and it looked like expectations were high.

Steve and Carol were our hosts, the welcome was good, and they had also selected the pegs to be fished.   The Golden Peg was 6.   After all the money was sorted it was onto the draw.

Ant Bear George got the Golden Peg, and with his tongue was already out, he started to tell everyone about the great achievements he would make.   Peg 6 won the last match we had on this lake, but there is a rumor fish can swim.!!   The lads just smiled and said we would see.

There were no pegs 1 and 15 today, as the flyers had been taken by pleasure anglers, but we had plenty of room as it is a big lake.   I drew the peg I wanted number 3 and I was very happy.   I had Sausage in 4 , but as there was no one in 2 I thought I would have a [peaceful day.

All in and I had one option today, corn and more corn, as I had not had time to visit Steve The Kedge on Tuesday.    So it was 10 metres straight out with the little ground bait I had plus corn.  I was prepared for a slow start.   For the first hour 3 fish for 3lbs, then 5 fish in the second, which made me think "not too bad"

I was not bored, because there was plenty of evidence  resulting from the humpy- pumpy we saw at our last visit.     Babies of several varieties of ducks, geese, and coots were swimming nearby all chaperoned by and angry looking Muscovey.   Who cares about fishing at this great venue?  I do!!.   Ant Bear had the Golden Peg with The Nasty Old Sheriff next to him, I though there goes my nuggets today.

My day got progressively better, I was building a good weight of skimmers, plus a good tench, and a few roach.   I also caught small carp, but nothing big.    It was a real day's fishing, and I was reluctant to shout all out.

Danny and I set out with those truth telling scales.  We started with W.O.2 Bill, followed by Jon Claude and Tive.    To be honest they had the worst of the weather and struggled.   Next it was Ninja who weighed 45lbs 11oz , which was good enough to win.   He was followed by Richie with 42lbs 11oz.     Then on to our side of the lake.   Mustard with 19lb 6oz, The Sheriff got 17lb 10oz of silvers, then it was time for the big tongue! he should have kept it quiet, he had just 12lb 9oz of silvers, and one large scaley.    Tungsten with 16lb 13oz of silvers and a total of 21lb 5oz,.  then it was on to Sausage with 10lb 14oz of silvers.

I was last to weigh, and was confident with 10lb 13oz of carp, and a very rewarding 32lbs 15oz of silvers.    It did feel good extracting nuggets from the two roughs I call mates.

Well done to Shiplate for their excellent fishery and a big thank you to the lads who turned out on a difficult day, which made my day easy.

Next Wednesday we are at Trinity Woodlands, and with the Weather Gods promising nothing                    but warmth I hope for a good turnout.

Let's be having you "hands off c...ks on with socks"

                               Let's catch some fish.

HLS Angling Dad's Army Wednesday 22nd May Summerhays Longs

Dad's Army marched on Summerhays Longs today on a lovely warm sunny morning.  Everyone was in high spirits     There were eleven on parade today, and the social was good.    No Ant Eater today as he is having an injection; knowing George he will say they were using the biggest needle in the hospital!!!   Mustard was taking his wife to make the caravan rock somewhere by the seaside; I am sure we will missed them both.

It did not take long to do the paperwork and draw.   The Golden Peg was 33, drawn by The Wizard, could he magic the dosh out of my box?  I drew 12 between Highland Bill and Aquatic Kev, which made for an interesting day.

At a couple of minutes to ten we got on with ALL IN.   Bill's first cast in with the feeder  and out with a fish, before I had not even put any feeder in.   He caught quite a few fish in the first couple of hours, then for some reason, which only people from his part of the world would understand, he changed his tactics and fished the pole catching zilch for two hours; so no repeat of his win last week, although he still came third overall.

I had an enjoyable day catching various size skimmers and roach.   I knew The Nasty Old Sheriff was catching well.   When I dropped my 4 and 5 sections into the water I thought curtains, but after a little time I managed to retrieve them, but it was time wasted.

The Wizard next to Danny was having a good day catching carp, which were a sensible size, making for very good match fishing.   Then there was a loud crack, it was a section of Danny's pole.   I know I should't, but I thought that might slow him down.

Kev was quiet, and I knew he had a little snooze, but with all his health problems I reckoned this sunny little excursion did him good.   We hope to see more of you Kev!

Time passes quickly when you are enjoying yourself and it was time for the all out and pack up.  Danny was weighing and I did the board.   We started with Kev who had a few carp for 9lbs 12ozs, I was next with just silvers 12lbs 12ozs and happy.    The Highlander Bill weighed 47lbs, but what could have been?   John had 7lbs 13ozs of silvers, then Tungsten who got 11lbs 14ozs of silvers plus carp.   Ninja had two nets weighing 68lbs of scaleys;  would he beat the Wizard?.   Sheriff had l3lbs 10ozs of silvers for my tear stained nugget.  Brian managed 52lbs 4ozs; the Bridesmaid? he was runner up overall.

Graham and Tonto both had good weights, but it was the dynamic duo of The Sheriff and Ninja twho won again.   It was a good match on a very good, well kept fishery;  the full results are below.

Next Wednesday it's Shiplate Main Lake.

                             Let's make it ring

HLS Angling Dad's Army Wednesday 15th May Trinity Ash

Ten of Dad's Army gave Trinity Ash the once over today.  The weather gods were on our side for a change.

I selected the pegs and finished the business.   The draw was completed with Tonto on the Golden Peg 12.   The Nasty Old Sheriff drew his usual flyer by the bridge, and George had end peg 18, that could have been another nugget gone.   As George always fishes with his tongue out, he will be referred to as Ant Bear in future.    I drew peg 9 with the Wizard to my left, an the only other one I could see was Tivi in front on the other bank.

All in and I decided red maggot, caster, and sweetcorn on my bait tray, with a mix of ground bait laced with the afore mentioned.   I decided two thirds of the way to the island with a single red on a small hook, and hoped the marauding  vermin were not to hungry.

It was not long before I was catching, and roach, rudd and skimmers entered my net.   I then changed to caster, hoping for bigger fish, but it was more of the same.   After a couple of hours it was slowing down, so I tried corn, but my reward was just one plump roach, so it was back to the maggot.   I tried the margin, but had no luck.   I shouted across to Tivi Dave, who gave me the thumbs down, saying no  fish.

The last two hours I spent watching a family of Moorhens, while a heron stood two swims away watching me?    The sun was out, I was having a great day taking a lots of abuse, but I also caught some fish.   I could not ask for much better.

All out and Danny, Mustard, and I started the weigh in.  Tivi didn't bother, then myself 10lbs 5ozs of silvers, which was much more than I thought.   Wizard had 14lbs 14 ozs of carp, and his usual one or two silvers.   Tonto had been enjoying the sun and relaxing while having a chat to anyone who would oblige, so DNW.   Next it was the Sheriff 8lb 12ozs  of silvers.    Tungsten had a rare bad day, then Ninja who weighed 10lbs 12 ozs of silvers, and just 3lbs 2ozs of scaleys.   It was then onto Ant Bear on the end peg, he reckoned, as he does, that he had lost the biggest carp in the lake, and weighed a measley 6lbs 7ozs.   I was chuffed as two very unexpected nuggets entered my pocket, from my two tormentors;  Happy days!

Next week it's Summerhays Longs, and another of Pete's so called jokes?  See you there.

                                                     Bob  (Adjutant)

P.S.   Sadly one of our members, Terry has died, and Dad's Army would like to convey their condolences to his family at their time of sorrow.

HLS Angling Dad''s Army Wednesday 8th May Sedges Tile

It was Wednesday, the forecast was hell.   We were fishing Sedges Tile, which produces great weights of both carp and silvers.   There were just nine of Dad's Army fishing today, which meant I could put us all on the protected bank pegs 21 to 30, it was amen to that.

Jamie and Denise looked after our needs today, so there were plenty of free hot drinks, and pegs organised.   At the draw The Sheriff did not like 29.    George drew the Golden Peg 28, he was full of --it, telling Danny and anyone else who would listen, how big a thrashing he would give us using his ledger rod.    I drew 23 which was between Ninja and Tivi.

It was then off to the lake, and I must comment on the great condition of Sedges Fishery, I think pristine covers it.    I had a tree feature to my left, and with the weather in mind, I fished caster on top four as close as I could get.   Tivi was fishing paste on the other side of the tree, and Ninja was chucking out to the island looking for  the vermin.

All in and Tivi and I were finding it slow, but not Ninja who was soon splashing about and grunting like a bull on heat.   After two hours struggling I was now into good skimmers and nice roach.  I was also into the tree a few times loosing two rigs.   I must be the clumsiest old git fishing.   Ninja came and took my carp net, saying I didn't need it. Cheeky sod!!!

The forecast was right unfortunately, it just chucked it down by the bucketful, not nice, but all these tough troops were at the weigh.

The biggest weight today went to Ninja with 142lbs 6ozs, mostly scaleys; I don't know how he does it.    I was knackered catching 20bs 8ozs of silvers.    We got to George and the moment of truth! He had a respectable 24lbs 12ozs of silvers, which was just good enough for fourth in that category.  Next to the Sheriff who just smashed George with 41lbs 8oz of silvers plus some carp.   He told George it didn't pay to boast.  He also told me he had cast out just three times before putting his rod away, ha ha!  Tungsten was last to weigh with 27lbs 8ozs of silvers and a total of 50lbs ozs.   Full results below.

Next Wednesday we are giving Ash at Trinity a try, it's good to have a change.   Could make for                              a close match.    So ding dong.

                                               Bob  (Adjutant)

P.S.     Super-cup   We have been drawn home against Poole in the next round, these were                       last years competition winner, so no pressure

HLS Angling - Summerhayes - 05.05.19

This week we were at the Summerhayes Fisheries on Sellicks Lake. The venue was to be changed to Longs however with another Match already booked in and Sellicks fishing better we stayed on here.

We had 17 booked in for today and I was optimistic that fishing would be good. The lake looked good with fish topping and lots of fizzing in the water and the weather was good, nice and warm with a bit of sunshine.

The guru Tart collected the bucket and asked Dettal to pick out the golden peg which was nos 17 - a good silvers peg.

We then dived into the bucket to draw our pegs which was as follows

Peg

1 - Dick
3 - Me
5 - Dettal
7 - Tungsten Dave
9 - Quenie
10 - Big Nick
11 - The Guru Tart
12 - Steve Warren
13 - John Wolenscroft
14 - Mario Tony
16 - Eric
17 - Lord C
18 - Sharp Shopper
20 - Roger
22 - George
23 - Danny

So a few nice draws today with preferred Silvers angler lord C on a good silvers peg, John and Steve next to one another fighting over their £1, Maver / Preston Dual with me next to Dettal and the Silvers guru's Danny next to George for that all important golden nugget.

At the set up even though I was a mile away from them all I could hear over the lake was Big Nick and Queenie, obviously battling it out for the loudest persons competition today.

The Guru Tart had a great start to the day as people winding him up about some make believe Guru floats that's Simon Garbot kindly sent to me on face book which I then sent to the Guru Tart. He was fuming that he hadn't been included and not received some free ones. Ironically then Steve Kedge appeared and I had a qick mention to him about them who then accidentally dropped them in the conversation and the Guru Tart took the bait and he went. He was so enraged that he broke the tip of his rod (Again) - cheap guru stuff!!

I had Dettal and Dick for companions today and unfortunately I had a big tree to my right so I couldn't see Dick so had Dettal to look at catching fish next to the nice patch of lilies.

Fishing was a bit difficult with the fish not really taking it and I landed several carp albeit I must admit to getting my first fish in the rudder then I foul hooked or hook pulled 6 trying to stop them going under the platforms.

Dettal was also having the same problems and lost about 10 fish. On a normal day when they were taking the bait I'm sure most of these would have been landed and the overall weights would have been much better

Further up the bank I could see Tungsten Dave landing a few and I knew that Queenie was doing ok as again he didn't stop talking, but to be fair he is a class angler and the richest postman in the South west.

So the all out was called and I felt I should have had a least another 25lb in the net but that's fishing as Im sure that Dettal would claim even more and others Im sure would claim the same but I couldn't see them.

HLS Angling Dad's Army Wednesday 1st May Avalon

Eleven of Dad's Army arrived at Avalon on a calm grey morning.   The craic was good, George had his  ongoing problem with his trolley wheels, one of which eventually fell off.   We all had a good laugh, and the conclusion was that George was off his trolley!!!

Ron was there to look after us today. he's a good bloke, he had the peg discs ready.   All that remained was getting "blood out of the stones" namely extracting the lad's pennies.   On to the draw, I got golden peg number sixteen, and I fancied my chances, as this is one of my favourite venues with a nice head of bream and some cracking tench resident here.

All in, and out go the pots of feed including mine, which had a good dose of corn and caster.   I was not expecting to catch straight away, with corn on the hook I was looking for a better quality fish.

On my left John had a very slow frustrating day, but to my right Steve caught a few carp and silvers.  The most exciting part of the day was seeing a chap across the lake fall out of his chair not once but twice.   Beat that Kev Hayes.

My day was full of plenty of movement on the float, but not many positive bites.   I weighed 11lbs 15ozs of silvers, this included a 3lb tench in pristine condition, plus a good bream, me thinks it's the mating season.

Eric did the business on peg 8, proving you don't have to have a island chuck to win.   The Nasty Old Sheriff took the silvers on the end peg 7, with a commendable 21lbs 8ozs.

Everyone caught fish, the weather behaved, what more could a chap want on a Wednesday?

Next week it's Sedges Tile so make me happy and use the dog and bone 01278683243.
