Wednesday 27th January 2016 - Landsend

Landsend the venue on a damp breezy day, and just 9  came to fish.   Roger and myself were on funeral duty, and the road closed at Mark, just two setbacks.   I turned out for the draw and start, then passed over to Treasure Tony and Danny.

Apparently the fishing was hard, Robot Duck coming out the winner from corner peg 13, with John Barker taking the silvers from peg 17

I am looking forward to Sunday at Shiplate where all the pegs are taken.   Next Wednesday its Avalon so get on the phone 01278683243.

                                                           Cheers

Sunday 24th January 2016 - Trinity Woodlands

Sunday and 1 HLS Members arrived early to compete at Trinity Woodlands.  The Great Western chose the pegs to be fished, Danny sorted the discs, and the draw was ready to take place.   The Golden Peg  was No. 14.

The weather was quite warm with no rain forcast.   I drew peg 13, not a bad peg,  but to an angler right out of form it was; just 5lbs 2ozs after 51/4 hours of effort, must do better!!!

On my right I had Tonto Coombs, just waiting for enquiries, and to my left John Davies on the golden peg.  John started on the pole then swiched to  the feeder rod, he immediately started catching carp and skimmer, inevitably it was the third consecutive pay out of the golden peg, what odds on that?

Across the lake I am watching Robot Duck  and Bolton George catching at a regular rate, I felt a severe bout of deep depression coming on, especially with reports that Danny the Sheriff is doing well.

Oh well just another day at the office, its only a pound, but it does not go down well.

Come the weigh in everyone had a story to tell, I often wonder what the weights would be, if the ones that got away didn't!!!

What a contrast to Wednesday weatherwise, well done lads, you deserved thawing out, lets hope next week is better.

Not much room left on Sunday at Shiplate and Wednesday its Landsend.

                                               Good fishing , Good luck

Wednesday 20th January 2016 - Shiplate Hawthorns

It was the coldest morning of the winter, the lake was frozen over, not a duck in sight.   15 of Dads Army arrived, and we immediately started smashing the ice and getting the pegs ready for the off, hard work but rewarding.   13 of us actually fished.   The sun shone, but expectations were not high fishwise.   I drew peg 8 next to the air-eator, which had been switched on prior to the whistle, so was ice free, unfortunately fish free as well!!   I did manage to coax out some small roach, skimmers, and chub for 3lbs 12oz, but my bad run continues.   This has not gone unnoticed, some of the comments about age concern, and spec savers were hurtful to my delicate feelings!!!!   So I fired out a lot of abuse and insults about their parentage and fishing ability, and felt much better reading out the results.

Danny won overall by just 1oz!!  from Dave Tunstall with 13lbs 13ozs.   Pete Cooke won the silvers with 10lbs plus, a good weight on the day; a day when Global Warming was history, and we were more likely to see Polar Bears and Penguins.   Well done the lads, you made another great day out of what appeared to be a disaster.

Sunday its Trinity,  I can take a few more,  followed by Landsend next Wednesday.

                                     Keep at it?!

PS: Blog Man is very impressed with Dad's Army..... Obviously, your wives are still kicking you out on such a cold morning!!!

Sunday 17th January 2016 - Sedges Tile Lake

21 Fished on a cold damp day morning, Kev would have made it 22, but spent Saturday night in hospital after falling and bumping his head;  a case of one more than a full load.   Talking to him on the phone later, the response was,  " Roll on Wednesday".

The draw was made Big Bird Eagle drawing the golden peg 37.   We then plodded through the mud to our positions.   I drew peg 31, not the best for silvers, so I just got on with it and failed miserably!!.   Colin Lambert on my left talked White Hart Lane and Spurs all day, boring!!.  The other notable part of my day was a continuous flow of 6-8-10 mil pellets falling out of the sky into my swim.   I have names in the book.

After the Golden Peg was won on the first week, it was decided that 50 pence per angler be collected on Sunday matches.   Good thinking!  The Eagle won the silvers and empted the pot again.   Considering the conditions the weights were not bad, Horney Beards coming out on top withe 63lbs 11ozs on peg 40, followed by the Great Western puffing in with 55lbs 2ozs.   Summing up it was a good turn out, even George refused to moan;   "I  AM CONFUSED"

Wednesday at Shiplate Hawthorns 15 pegs,  I have 14 names at the moment with 3 possibles, so make up your minds for the final peg, first comes fills the spot.   Next Sunday it's Trinity,  I have 20 names so  can take a few more.  It's been a good start to the new year, lets keep it going.

Wednesday 13th January 2016 - Viaduct match lake

Wednesday and the weather's looking good, the frost from the night before melting away.   The lads of Dads Army sounded good and couldn't wait for the draw to get on with it.  Pity I got the names and numbers wrong, but in the end 14 wanted and 14 fished.

At the draw I drew peg 38, which is actually on Middle Lake, next to Roger on peg 37.   I felt like the "Lone Ranger" with Tonto Roger beside  me. Danny and George (back in the country from Bolton) reckoned we were pleasure angling!! but it did not turn out that way.   After nearly 3 hours I had my first bite, and a small skimmer came to the net.   Next door Tonto caught three fish in 5 hours for around 2lbs, not worked to death.   My day got better, and the last hour produced around 6lbs of roach, rudd and perch; at the weight in I totalled 7lbs 1oz of silvers.

It was a good day everyone caught, it was noticeable that the bulk came from one side of the lake, pegs 42 to 45, where John Barker caught 17lbs 4ozs of silvers plus carp to win the match overall,  George winning the silvers by default with 7lbs 15ozs.

Thanks for a good day, see you on Sunday at Sedges Tile Lake, and Wednesday at Shiplate Hawthorns, both matches full.

Sunday 10th January 2016 - Trinity Woodlands

20 members arrived in time to have a cuppa and  chat before the draw.  Martin Western took a circuit of the lake to decide which pegs to use, Horny was asked to sort out discs with the selected peg numbers on? What happend thirty niumbers in the hat for twenty anglers (typical of a Shakespear bummer boy).  The Golden Peg was on offer for the first time,  the king got his sticky fingers on it, and went off to peg 6 real flyers with a smirk on his face;  51 lbs of fish later I reluctantly placed the spoils in his clammy palm, this accompanied by a lot of unprintable comments from the less lucky ones.  Well done Steve.

I drew peg 9 between Colin Haggard and  "The Sherrif of Nottingham" Danny.   Toot at 10-00 started us off.   I tossed in a few free offerings and lowered in the float.   I turned to Danny, about to sample my doughnut, when the float moved, and a couple of minutes later a 21/2 lbs bream was in the net; great excitment!   My expectations were high, BUT sadly my float developed rigor mortis, and refused to move for 2 hours.   I did manage a hard earned 4lbs 12 ozs, and mourned the thought of another of my pound coins entering Danny's deep pockets.

The New Year is getting off to a food start, with strong support from the members.  Each week I look forward to Wednesdays and Sundays, good laughs, good craic, and good mates.

Wednesday Viaducts a full lake , and a full lake on Sunday unless anyone cancels.

Wednesday 6th January 2016 - Emerald Pools

18 of Dads Army assembled in the car park on what turned out to be the best day's weather we have had for a long time.   The fishing was not bad either; plenty of fish caught, Ruby producing better than Sapphire. Bend It and I set out to do the pegging with 9 on each lake.   When we came back to the car park I was thinking we needed more swims, but we had got it right.

Money collected, Alan paid, we made the draw, and spread ourselves around the lakes.   I drew peg 16 on the carpark side of Ruby.     I felt like a daffodil between two dandelions!!  Dave Harvey to the left Pete Robot Duck to my right.   My preparation was nil as I had been busy on Tuesday, the fish were getting leftovers from Sundays maggot and caster, not very exciting.   I bellowed the all in at 9-45  put in a small amount of free offerings and set about it.   My first fish was a roach about 11/2 inches long, and I am thinking all negative thoughts.   Across the lake Simon Garbutt was catching decent roach at a good rate, not good news, and he continued doing so for the next 5 hours.

My day improved, with a steady catch of small carp and roach going to the net, until stopping an hour from the end.   I was feeling quietly confident but Robot Duck's last hour produced carp after carp, wiping me off the map.   Dave, on my left, was using his favourite saying "I dont't know what I am doing wrong" then mentioned he was being hammered by the IDIOT on the next peg, namely me, naughty words Dave.

3 o'clock all out, pack up, and Dany and I start the weigh in.  Danny is having a smirk, which generally mans I have to give him a pound for most silvers, and with 15lbs 8ozs of quality roach he deserved it.  Simon had 13lbs 12ozs of Silvers on  Ruby.  My 39lbs 4ozs was way behind Robot Petes 58lbs 4ozs,  I should have blown the whistle an hour earlier!!  A good match with the results below.

Sunday 3rd January 2016 - Sedges Brick Lake

Weatherwise not the best start to 2016, but 20 of HLS arrived to fill all the pegs on the lake, and empty it of fish!!! Thats a laugh.    Everyone had plenty of chat while Denise made drinks and the peg numbers were sorted.   My Treasurer, having recovered from the flu, collected the money and sorted the pools money.  The draw was made and Danny put names to the respective peg numbers.  Danny drew his resident peg 4 , and, feeling confident, I drew peg 12, not over happy with that I trudged though the mud and rain to prepare to fish.  On my right was Mike Bend it like Bendell, and to my left Big Bird Rob Eagle, giving me plenty of competition.

Horny tooted at 9-45 giving us an extra 15 minutes of fishing.   I took out the ledger rod, which brought out comments about which end to use, I ignored these, then had to ask Mike if I could lend a feeder!   Mike and I perservered with the feeder for an hour and a half, then we got desperate and tried everything else,  to no avail.

The weather improved, and Danny and I did the honours with the weigh in, which resulted in a first time winner overall, Dick Hurford, with a commendable 84lbs 10ozs  off peg 10.  Well done Dick.   The full results are below.

Emerald pools on Wednesday next, followed by Trinity on Sunday 10th. I look forward to seeing you then.

Don't forget the AGM  FRIDAY 8th at 7-30pm   37 CLUB
