HLS Angling Dad's Army Wednesday 28th November Viaducts Cary

Viaducts Cary was where Dad's Army did battle today, and although the Meteorological Office had tried to put the frighteners on us we were all kitted up and ready to go.

Nine were on parade, and it was decision time for peg selection,   After walking the lake I decided on the easy option by letting Badger make the choice.    The business completed and it was time for the draw,  with peg 96 as the Golden Peg which went to Bend It.  The Sheriff had the unfancied peg 105, I was next on 102, with Bill the Paste on 100; Tivi and the Wizard completed our bank.   There were just three on the fancied far bank Mustard, Ross and Sparky, but they had the worst of a very difficult wind and rain.

All in, and the main job was ensuring the safety of our gear, fishing coming second.   I decided on 10 metres in front, feeding caster and ground bait in just small amounts often, hoping to attract a few fish.   It took nearly two hours to get my first bite, a very small roach.   While I was waiting Tonto came round for a chat; he was not fishing today ,and he told me Sheriff was catching small roach.    I could see Ross netting skimmers on the hot peg 78.

My day got better, I switched from maggot to caster on the hook, and was rewarded with some quality fish, and quite a few roach.   Happy days!! and the weather was bearable.

It was all out, and the father and son Badgers weighed us in;  we felt highly honoured.   They started with Tivi who had 5lb 14ozs which included a 2lb 1oz perch.  Somerset Angling had kindly given us a £10 voucher three weeks ago, to be won by the biggest perch caught in one of our matches, and it had taken until today for this species to be caught.   Next to weigh was Bend It who had 16lbs with 2lbs llozs perch.   Bill the Paste had a rare DNW  I managed 12lbs 13ozs, and Danny 9lbs 14ozs.

Mustard struggled with 3lbs 4ozs, but Ross did well with 12lbs, but it was Sparky who lit up the day with 27lbs5ozs.   I cannot remember coming to Viaducts and not having a tussle with some of the scaly residents patrolling the waters.   More of a surprise was, not one was caught during the match, all the weights were silver fish.

Several thank- yous, first to Steve and Matt at Viaducts, and Somerset Angling for the voucher, it's really good that there is some give as well as take in the sport.  Finally I thank the men of Dad.s Army for turning out in atrocious conditions.   We had an enjoyable day with good company.

Next week it's Trinity Woodland, where hopefully the weather conditions will be more
clement, and the fish come out to play.

Sedges 25/11/18 brick lake

Brick lake 25/11/18 Sedges lake

We had Brick lake booked today and I personally like this lake as I think the silver fishing is better but I had a phone call in the week from Martin aka Lord C who told me that 13lbs won the mid week match ...ouch ...so it could be a hard day then !!

Anyway we met up at Mac D's in Street and then made our way to Bridgewater …i un loaded the car and then had a chat to a few of the lads ..Then I asked if anyone brought any crap in the Black Friday deals as there was some great buys online  ..and then LEE the guru tart ..sorry Phil the guru tart was saying that he might buy a new seat box and a new pole and some new reels and a few new rods and has just ordered a new set of Gore-Tex from Halkon hunt and he wasn't happy as he is a big lad and they had to charge him a bit more due the extra work making his new suit …and yes it is bright orange with his name on the back "Lee the power sorry Phil the power"……

Anyway we had 17 booked in and we all wanted pegs 10 or 11 !! well I did .. so into the bucket of dreams and  ball number 9 was looking at me ..I was happy as I have done ok in the past from this peg but I wasn't sure how it would fish today .. looking at the sheet I could see the big guns on the hot silver pegs ..i.e.  Lord C on peg 5 and D.T on peg 6 and the biggest ego in the club on peg 13 !! yes George "best silvers angler in  the club" and then that man Danny on peg 16 and Ross on 17 ..so I was thinking it might be hard to pick up any coin today on the silvers front !!! and while setting up there were carp topping in peg 10 and 11 …..Solid !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  and who got these to great pegs ?? well peg 10 had the silver fox and peg 11 had John who I think was going for the silvers which could be a hard from that peg … also we had our very own radioactive man aka Stan who was glowing green on peg 12 .. it's always nice to see Stan and I wish he fished a bit more but he told me that  the country need him to build this new power plant in Bridgewater  ….hero I was thinking  … well £100 per hour keeps him at work !!!!

so onto the match well it was hard and looking round it was hard for all I could see D.T get the most bites all day and had a nice net of white bait to go with a skimmer ..I had to look at the carp crashing around in pegs 10 and 11 all day and I said to the silver fox all he had to do was put a hook on his line and he would win !! joke tony ! looking over I could see Stan getting the odd skimmer on the tip and I was thinking that he might win the silvers pool ..and he did with 7-2 of silvers ..I wasn't sure what he was fishing on the hook but is glowing green ?? and he said he got it from work ?? ..

looking from peg 5

Me well I hooked 8 carp and got 4 in for 30lbs and that was good for 1st overall so not to bad a day and I do like it when it hard as you are never out of it ..I had them on the long pole and bait was pellet over pellet ..

1st silvers Radioactive man Stan peg 12 7-2
2nd silvers D.T peg 6 6-4
3rd silvers Paul (Paxo baits) peg 19 5-9

1st overall s king peg 9 30lbs
2nd overall Danny (Pinocchio) baits peg 16 21-15
3rd overall lord C peg 5 (octopussy baits) 19-8

Sorry for the short blog but I am very busy this week with the fall out from black Friday ...oh joy !!

Next week we are on tile lake and there are spaces if you want to fish

Also there will be a AGM on the 4/1/19 at the 37 club at 7.30  so if you want to chew the fat then please come along …

HLS Angling Dad's Army Wednesday 21st November Sedges Tile

When I raised myself out of the pit today, it was with fear and trepidation!! The forecast was grim       RAIN, STRONG EAST WINDS, and TOP TEMPERATURE 7 DEGREES !!!  sheer madness for an  old timer.    I dressed with enough clothes to stock OX-FAM for a year.

I arrived at Sedges at 08-00 hrs, all was quiet so I decided to walk around the lake.   We were fishing on Tile today, and halfway round I saw cars arriving, and thought more members for the funny farm? You have to admire the men of Dad's Army,. no matter what the conditions, a parade's a parade, and their duty is to catch fish with their mates.

There were twelve of us today.   Jamie and Denise looked after us with hot drinks all round.   The pegs were selected and the money business completed.   Then came the draw, Ninja got the Golden Peg number twenty two.   Everyone had an empty peg on one side, so we thought there should be a few fish caught today.    Most of the lads were baiting up with maggot, caster or pinkie, but soft pellet was also popular.

It was 09-45 hrs until 15-00 today.   At the all in I put a little loose feed and ground bait on the 11.5 metre line, this was where I aimed to stay all match. I had Tungsten to my right, and WO2 Bill on my left, so good company.    I put a pinkie on a 20 hook and waited   I took time but I got a small roach, which meant I had not blanked.   Tungsten was catching small fish regularly.   I could see Sparkie on peg forty was getting a few small skimmers.   After a couple of hours Bill P had caught two trees but no fish! and  I had an eel to go with my lone roach.

The day progressed , for me it was slow but, it did not rain, not much wind, and the sun shone through.   A just reward for the resilient men who stayed at their positions to the end, and weighed in.

We started with Ninja who said he had just one fish!! but asked for help to lift his net out?  the result was 50-00 lbs of scaleys.  How could this man perjure himself so consistently?  Tungsten had managed  7lbs 11ozs of silvers, plus a carp.   I had three eels, a skimmer and a roach, plus a carp for 12lbs 13ozs.   The Wizard 23lbs 6ozs, and it was off to the other bank and The Nasty Old Sheriff who weighed 5lbs 12ozs, was this enough for some nuggets?   George was hovering, and we knew what that meant, he could not stop telling porkies.  Simon weighed 30lbs 12ozs, and Bill the Paste surprised us with 16lbs 7ozs of silvers.   George had 7lbs 2ozs of silvers for the nuggets.   Mustard came second overall with 34lbs 1oz, and Sparkie 11lbs 9ozs of silvers, for second in that category.

Summing up, it was a day of surprises, The Paste won the silvers, the weather was very good, and to top it all Eric won the Golden Peg.   I must say thanks to all the lads for turning out, and making my day a good one.

Next Wednesday we visit Viaducts and it's Scary Cary.   We could be down on numbers for                              various reasons.  Please make it ring!!!

Sunday 18-11-18 Avalon Fisheries

This was my second visit to Avalon in as many weeks. Last time it was hard going and with the drop in temperature today was not looking much better. The sun was out and it was a pleasant day so hopefully an enjoyable day.
I seemed last to arrive and was greeted with many 'well wishes'. 15 names were on the sheet, all to be pegged on the left with a NE wind blowing down the lake. Luckily most of the leaves had gone and so no surface rubbish.

The Guru Tart had a personalised number plate on his van, W10 PLB. We decided the middle was for Lesley as he's always acting like a big girl. He was in usual form and directing operations. We were to fish 10 til 3:30 and the golden peg was 3.

First into the bag was Danny who pulled out 3!!!! I went next and got 12, sh*t. It was the same peg as last time and I didn't do any good then.
At the peg I had Martin Western to my right and Steve King to my left. Steve obviously didn't like that close to me cos he stood on the platform and broke it then moved to peg 14. Martin and I noted the foul play. Karma is a bitch cos he later snapped the butt section of his pole.... ouch, costly!!!

At my peg I decided to fish for silvers as per last time. I went for 3 lines, one at 10 o'clock on 10m, another at 2 o'clock at 10m and then the margins. One line was fed with the So Simple Little Red Micros and the other line was with some Tom Thick groundbait laced with caster. I did later come in on a 8m line just feeding caster.

The word of the day, for me was biteless, or should I say, one foul hooked carp which didn't reach the surface and tiny little bites from fish not much bigger than the bait. My only success was 'whitebait' from the margins.

To my right, Martin was suffering the same. Paul Bowyer on 10 managed to find one bream and bits, however Tony Newell on peg 9 found plenty of carp to net the top weight.
Steve King, on the illegal peg 14 didn't have much success until he went out to 16m, finding bream and carp. He had to reduce to 15m after his pole mishap but the fish showed sympathy and continued to bite.
Word from the top end of the lake was that they were getting more bites.

At the all out, Ron did the weigh in and the results were:-

Overall
1st Tony Newell, peg 9 - 60-13.
2nd Dave Allen, peg 20 - 37-08.
3rd George, peg 23 - 22-14.

Silvers
1st Steve King, peg 14 - 23-14 (hope he gave the money to repair platform 13)
2nd Tony Fry, peg 16 - 7-14.
3rd Paul Bowyer, peg 10 - 4-05.

Lastly, Phil wants to know who is fishing the Xmas match and needs your money by the 25th November latest!!!!!

HLS Angling Summerhays Longs Wednesday 14th November

Including our guest Geoff, eleven of Dad's Army paraded at  Pete's Summerhays fishery today;  Longs the lake to be used.   It was a bit windy, but for November the weather was good.

Pete was cooking bacon and making hot drinks while giving is usual misleading advice to anyone foolish enough to listen.   I collected the dosh and  chose the pegs to be fished, the Golden Peg was eleven.   It was a bit noisy today, maybe because we were graced with the presence of the Shakespearean Bummer Boy, whose reputation goes before him!!! Welcome back Phil good to see you.

Onto the draw; the Wizard got lucky eleven.   I got a very windy end peg seven, with Tonto to my left. All in and let's see what happens    I didn't feed too much, and fished as light as possible with pinkie and maggot as hook bait.     For Tonto and myself it was very slow.   After three hours, with just a few bits in the net, I took a walk around the lake.   Most seem to be  struggling, but when I got to Bill the Paste he gave me some local knowledge about my peg.   When I started again what a difference that made,  four vermin and some silvers!! If only I had known from the start.

At all out time The Nasty Old Sheriff and I started the weigh at peg seven.   I got 14lbs 11ozs, Roger 23lbs 4ozs, and Brian, who failed with just one carp, and not even his usual one silver!!  They won't be singing in the Valleys today.   Next it was Tungsten 8lbs 10ozs, and then the course specialist Bill who gave us all a hammering with 70lbs 6ozs .   Geoff, our guest plus his dog, won silvers with 5lbs 7ozs?   Phil 11lbs 13os, Danny 29lbs 15ozs, Ninja had 26lbs 8oz, and finally George, who with 37lbs got second overall.

Well done everyone, you don't have to catch tons of fish to have a great day out with your mates, as today proved.

Next Wednesday it's Sedges fishing Tile,   Another great venue, so get off your                                                                   butts and let's get on with it

HLS Angling Club Dad's Army Emeralds Speci Lake Wednesday 7th November

Today Dad's Army were on parade at Emeralds on the Speci Lake, so I was limited for pegs.   The first thing I did when arriving at 7-45, was to do the pegging.   I managed to squeeze in fourteen, which was just as well as fourteen of F Platoon arrived, all smartly turned out.    I had to say no to our potential guest Vic which was a shame.

The weather forecast was horrendous; it was raining when the lads arrived, but they happily !! parted with their ackers, with the expectations of a good day's fishing with their mates.

All the business was done with the Golden Peg number one.   Sticky fingers went into the hat and Bend It got lucky, that was until Boy George drew next to him, they were either side of a large swim I had made into two pegs.   The Nasty Old Sheriff drew the flyer, and Monsieur Baz had a top swim in the corner.    I drew peg nine between Tivi Dave and Ninja, so good company but an average swim.

Today we fished 09-45 until 15-30, so on the dot I shouted all in, and we got busy.   No rocket science here, the lake was full of skimmers and carp, so most were catching from the off.  I find that not much feed and a single maggot on the hook at this time o  f the year is good for the silvers.   I caught most of the day with a one and a  half hour quiet spell, which I found inexplicable, and it probably cost me.

Halfway through Ninja took my second net; is he man or machine when it comes to carp??
Some would say neither.    The day progressed and the weather was not as bad as was forecast.    It was just another great day's fishing.

It was all out and everyone looked pleased with themselves,   Danny started the weigh in with Sausage who had 22lbs 6ozs of silvers.   Next it was Bill the Paste who had three carp nets and a silver net, a quarter of an hour later the final tally was 161lbs 15ozs.    Well done Bill.   The Brad had 17lbs10ozs of silvers.   Tivi totaled 25lbs 1ozs, and I weighed 34lbs of silvers  I was happy, although I knew it would not be enough.

Another big weight was next, Ninja with 121lbs 3ozs, then came Mustard with 18lbs 1oz,  Tungsten 47lbs 12ozs and Not so Simple 57lbs 4ozs. on the top bank.   It was then onto the big three.   Starting with Danny 40lbs of silvers and 8lbs9ozs of carp, next Mike 38lbs  15ozs which was very close, finally,  the man with the big tongue, our George, who had 45lbs 3ozs of silvers and was smiling.

I believe I speak for us all, when after the match I said to Alan a big thank you, and we will keep returning to his wonderful fishery

When you realize it's November when weights traditionally drop,  just look at the result sheet., how nice it was not to struggle, it speaks for its self.

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned standing down from the organizing of  Wednesdays, but after hearing some alternative suggestions, and getting the feelings and vibes from the guys who fish on Wednesdays that you would not be happy,    So after talking to you, I think it had better we stay as we are, with a few adjustments and promises of commitment from you.

Next Wednesday we visit Summerhayes Longs.  Peter is a good lad, so let's support him by                            turning up and feeding his fish.

                              Ding Dong make it ring

Sunday 4 November 2018

Trinity Waters 4/11/18 woodlands

Trinity waters 4/11/18
I was looking forward to this match as I have been away this week and was itching to wet a line and I got my wish as it didn't stop raining all bloody day !!  Anyway the guys fished this lake mid week and looking at the results it looked like it fished hard ..
Me and martin (Lord C ) got to this fantastic venue nice and early so we had a walk around the lake (Woodlands)  and there were carp topping in the middle areas  (pegs 26,27)  so I wouldn't mind one of these pegs if I could get my pinkies in the draw bag nice and early!! also if I could choose a peg the any corner would be good !!!
So I paid my pools to Shane and said hello to all members and then  Phil and Shawn turned up and it was like a Guru and Preston trade show but I must say that Shawn's kit was a lot cleaner …. and then they each loaded £50000 of NEW gear onto there trolleys...but Shawn's trolley was a lot  cleaner....
the golden peg today was peg 27 and D.T got his hands on it !!! I got in line and watched people get some nice pegs and then than man Lord C got the best peg in the draw bag today (peg 15 ) and I was thinking that's the winner then .. so I asked him to draw me a peg number and he handed me peg 26 ..GOD THAT BOY CAN DRAW... So thanks for that mate …
I made my way to my peg which was a  nice short walk from the car park and getting to my peg  I had the wind coming from over my back which was a bonus....  so I set up a long pole to fish for silvers using ground bait and maggots and corn ..and a 13 meter line to fish for the water pigs using pellet on a band feeding 4mm...
To cut a long story short it fished rock hard ..well except for Danny (Pinocchio baits) on peg 29 who was showing us all (yes you to George aka the best silvers angler in the club..)  how to catch silvers as he had them from the off...Class act if I say so myself.... but the rest of us struggled big time and I only had I skimmer on the pole line and 3 carp on the tip ..which I only had as I was packing up my gear up and chucked out a feeder and had 23-8 of water pigs in the last 40 minutes so just luck but this was good as I picked up 2nd place overall and was beat by that man Danny who had 26 -4 of silvers to win 1st overall … git!! which was great for Shane as this meant he won the silver pool with 10-11  which was a bonus for him as it is his birthday tomorrow ( The big 70)
so he has some bear tokens …Happy birthday mate!!!
Anyway we started the scales on peg 6 with the Silver fox who chucked back  Eric peg 7 , Kev peg 7 also chucked back then it was Brian (HMRC baits) who had 4-2 of silvers … then Mike on peg12,Tony peg 13 also chucked back ..Shane on peg 14 had 10-11 of silvers and one carp for a total of 16-6, Martin (lord C) on peg 15 also chucked back as did John on peg 23 and then it was onto the cleanest angler in the UK "willy Wonka" and he had 17-8 to go into the lead !!I had 23-14 and then D.T had 4-3 of silvers and one carp for a total of 13-13 then it was Pinocchio on peg 29 who had a great winter net of silvers for a total of 26-4 …  Phil (guru tart ) also chucked back and then George (best silvers angler in the club) had one carp for 7-0 and loads of eyes for 7-8 for a total of 14-8 … and last was Graham who also chucked back ...so a very hard day but still nice to be out in the fresh air . just wish it was dry as my gear is soaked !!!
SO the winners today
1st overall Danny (Pinocchio baits) peg 29 26-4
2nd overall S King peg 26 23-14
3rd overall (Willy Wonka) Shaun peg 24 17-14
1st silvers Shane peg 14 10-11
2nd silvers George #(best silvers angler in the club) peg 32 7-0
3rd all round Mr nice guy D.T peg 27 4-3
So a big well done to all who sat it out and also a big well done to all the winners and from all in the club a big Happy Birthday the Shane who is 70 tomorrow (Monday)  "hope you have a great day …"
Next week we are at Landsend on match lake and I know lots of people don't like it for some mad reason but it would be nice to see a few there .. so if you want to fish please book in with the guru tart.
Also please let Phil the guru tart know asp if you are going to fish the XMAS match as we need numbers sooner rather that later … Thanks
have a great week ….

HLS Angling Wednesday 31st October Trinity Woodlands

We fished at Woodlands Trinity today, the ground was white with frost, so no great expectations were held.    This did not keep the troops quiet, the banter continued, no one was exempt from some kind of abuse.

We had Misha making hot drinks, and Danny sorting out the pegs to be used, so it was just myself sorting out the monetary business before the draw.    The Golden Peg was twelve drawn by "Not so Simple Simon"  The lad's thought it could be his day   I drew 24 with the Wizard on my right and an empty peg to my left.    Across the lake I could see half the lads, so I had a good idea how things were going.

The conditions determined how I fished, which was dead simple, maggot and pinkie on a size 20, ten meters in front, and left hand margin.   I  loose fed with not much ground bait.    All in and wait.   The first fish I saw was a small skimmer caught by Simon,  then Bend It  started playing a foul hooked vermin, which when weighed was 10lbs 13ozs; well done Mike.

From what I saw it was very slow and I decided to come up in the water.  The result was some small roach and a surprise carp, which was the better part of seven pounds.   The weather was kind except for a few showers.   I enjoyed the chat with the lads during the day.    My mate the Wizard had no carp today but twice as many silvers as me, which I might say was not difficult as I was rubbish.

It was time for the all out, I did not think Danny's back would be tested today   The first weight of any note was Bend It with  6lbs 8ozs of silvers and that dubious carp, a total of 17lbs 5ozs.  Next it was Golden Boy Simon who scaled 7lbs 4ozs of silvers and was in the lead at this point.   Boy  George however was smiling with his tongue hanging out and was denying what we all knew might be enough, and sure enough out came 8lbs 11ozs of silvers.  There was just that other lying little tow rag the Sheriff to weigh, I was wondering who would take my nugget,?   First Bill the Paste, one of our more truthful men (he will soon learn the art of deceit) said he had three carp one of which is a monster, so it was not surprising when the scales tipped 32lbs 8ozs,  for an overall win.

Back to the Sheriff, and out came the net, George was not looking quite so happy at this point, there were some unrepeatable christening names mentioned when the scales settled on 8lbs 15ozs, making him the winner by 4ozs.

It was tough today my 8lbs 15ozs was good enough for third overall.  The full results below.

Next Wednesday we visit Emeralds, which is always good for some fish. Looking forward to it.

                              You know the number!!

                                                     Bob
