HLS Angling Dad's Army Wednesday 27th March Viaducts Campbell

Seventeen of Dad's Army plus one guest were manning the banks of Viaducts Campbell today.  They all looked fit and raring to go, so I set about the business extracting the dosh and doing the sums.  Next it was into see Junior Badger Matt, who filled the bucket with the selected pegs.  The Golden one was 123, which Bend It had a few day ago,  when he netted 53lbs to win a match!!  Guess who drew it today? a jammy git called Bend It.

George drew 124 and was not moaning.  The Nasty Old Sheriff got 130 and was moaning.   I got the last out, it was my favourite 112 so I was happy.   I was sandwiched between Ross and guest Dave White, who I named "The Great Large White" as he gobbled up those old scaley residents.

On the all in Dave had elastic streaming out within a minute, a sure sign of things to come; will he make Ninja cry on the next peg?

Today my intention was two swims the first was five sections to the front, and the second just top two to my right.  I have drawn this peg quite often, it sticks out into the lake like Brighton Pier; you do not want an wind here.    From the start I caught roach and perch, followed by a double figure vermin, then a nice tench, followed by my 4 and 5 sections blowing into the water.    So it was the second option, top two to my right.   I started on 20 hook, and 2lb botom but after loosing several hooks I upped to 16 hook on 4lb bottom, with caster and maggot for bait.   I fed caster and a small amount of ground bait and my luck changed, I starting catching skimmers.

I could hear some choice words from Danny, but everyone seemed to be busy catching fish.   Ross came over and rescued my pole from the deep; after thanking him, I said I would recommend him to the Samaritans!     Anyway back to fishing in front   After a couple of nice skimmers my two sections returned to the deep; is this a record?

I was a great day, good weather, good craic, and very good fishing   I was thinking Matt was going to be a busy lad with that amount of fish to weigh.

He started with "I Claudius" who had a modest 42lbs 2ozs, then Tonto who topped the ton with 105lbs 6ozs.  What was Danny moaning about with 24lbs 1oz, I later learned about the ones that got  away, plus he lost his bait tray; no smirking please.

Dan G weighed 117lbs 15ozs for second overall, but Spod overloaded, so was red carded.   Tungsten and Sausage had an unusually quiet day, so it was on to George.

George weighed 28lbs 13ozs of silvers, and what he calls smiling!! we know better it's wind.  So could Bend It repeat?   The answer was yes,  with 32lbs 12ozs, well done Mike ..

There were good weights along our bank, Darren 90lbs 9ozs, myself 29lbs 10ozs which was good enough for second.  Dave The Beast won overall with 174lbs 9ozs and Eric 92lbs ozs.

You could not have better days than this, so come on let's fill the lakes at all the venues and get some social in,  plus good fishing.

        Next Wednesday it's Summerhays Sellicks.

I don't mind answering the phone, so make it ring PLEASE!!

HLS Sunday Fixtures

Please note - Emerald not being fished - check with Phil the revised venue

HLS - Shiplate Lake - 24th March

Todays venue saw us take on the scenic venue of Shiplate Fisheries and we were on the main lake. In contrast to the last time we fished here when we had to break ice and only four anglers caught, the sun was shining there was very little breeze and everyone was in buoyant mood except Mario Tony who appeared to have gone down with man flu.

We had the return of the Guru Tart this week, back from harassing the residents of Jersey, Eric from his fishing exploits at White Acres, Dave Allen and Stan which made a total congregation of 20 anglers

A few of the anglers were fresh from the trip to Farnborough where The Big One show was being held and Sharp Shopper Shane kindly present the Guru Tart with a very large mixing bucket. I say large, but not that big that his head would fit inside, it also matched the colour of his feminine pink bauble hat. Did anyone else notice the big brown stripe on the Gurus tongue - Im sure it came from Des Ship?

Anyway I had a walk around the lake and it looked good all around with the old carp topping and in fact I would have preferred fishing one of the small side lakes as they looked very tempting.

So into the draw and the golden peg was drawn which was peg 7, which I'm lead to believe that at that end of the pond doesn't normally perform so was probably going to be safe for another week.

Fancied pegs today were 10 which had been performing, nos 1 and nos 15

The draw was as follows

Peg

1 - Last Hour Dave
2 - Nice Guy Rich
3 - Tony Fry
3a - Sharp Shopper Shane
4 - Eric
4a - Shaun
5 - Mario Tony
5a - John
6 - Dave Allen
6a - Stan
7 - Steve Warren
10 - Mike Davis
11 - Queenie
12 - Lord C
12a - Sausage
13 - Guru Tart
13A - Steve Gardener
14 - Mutant George
14b - Me
15 - Danny

For me I was quite pleased to be between the 2 top silvers angler in the club; however I couldn't see what they were doing and as they were slightly more forward in their pegs they had a nice advantage. I set up at 13m line, a 7 to one side and a margin rig.

The all in hooter sounder and I shipped in 2 balls of ground bail laced with dead reads and few micros mixed in. To my Right George had landed a skimmer of 2-3lb although he said it was only 6 oz, to my left I could hear Danny landing a few fish as well and hen it was my turn, 2 skimmers in succession of about 2lb each, George was still catching and I think he had about 8-9lb in the first hour. Then it died for me, George was having a few small blades and a good roach and the same happened to him. However on my left I could still hear Danny catching regularly.

In the afternoon the sun to the side it got a bit cold and the wind got up, blowing from a north westerly direction it was cold however I was slightly sheltered; however, on the other side of the lake the condition appeared much worse.

The carp then moved in to our pegs and until the weigh n I didn't realise how big they were in this lake and when I hooked 1 I didn't stand much chance on my 0.10 hook length. Danny had landed a nice carp but reported that he lost 9 and George had 3 good ones weighing a total of 40lb.

I had a quick wonder up the bank on the final whistle and Queenie was grinning like a Cheshire Tom Cat, so he had done ok, the Guru Tart was reporting about 20lb silvers and I had to remove any sharp objects that could be seen by Lord C just in case.

Results

Overall

HLS Angling Dad's Army Sedges Tile Wednesday 20th March

HLS Dad's Army were attacking Sedges Tile Lake today.  The conditions were good, and expectations high as the lad's trundled into the car park.    There were sixteen of us on parade, and a finer bunch of blokes you could not wish for.

I have put my demob suit into mothballs, and I am reporting for another year of duty!!!   I just hope you lot can put up with me?   It was good to see that while I was on leave in N.Z a few more faces have been added to the club;  I wish them a many happy hours, and lots of fish in their nets.

Jamie and Denise were attending to our needs with hot drinks etc. and selecting pegs to be fished, thirty six being the Golden   I collected some reluctant money to pay Sedges and sort pools

Onto the draw, Danny was writing down the names with dubious spelling, but it was OK as I've learnt to read Gaelic!!   Mustard drew the Golden Peg, and I had peg thirty, facing The Nasty Old Sheriff on peg thirty one.   I was thinking Scaleys today.

It was maggots, pinkies and caster today, over ground bait laced with the same.    At ten o'clock we were off.   I thought keep it simple; how else?   I decided the margin diagonally across the corner.

All in and just a pot of ground bait mix,  send out the pole with just a 20 hook,  2lb bottom, a single red, and then wait.  I was prepared to wait, so it was three quarters of an hour, and after a few liners I had my first vermin.   It was a nice clean fish going about 6lbs so I was happy.

Twenty five minutes later I had two good bream, which were a pleasant surprise.   I had to turn to caster, which was my best bait of the day.    It was a great first day back, I ended up with 71lbs 6ozs of quality fish, not quiet good enough to be in the frame, but I was quite content.

All out,  at the weigh everyone had caught, and there were the usual porkies being told, but the scales don't lie.   It was a win for Martin, assisted by his dog Flo, with 125lbs of scaleys.   I  Claudius was second with 80lbs 9ozs.    Bend It won silvers with 34lbs 8ozs which were caught on the wag and caster.  Joint second were Richie and George with 26lbs 8ozs each.   Well done you men!!

It was good to be back, getting plenty of abuse from my friends??  and long may it continue .   Our thanks to Sedges for a quality days fishing.   We will be returning soon.    Full results below.

Next Wednesday it's Viaducts Campbell, another great venue.
So let's show our appreciation and turn out in numbers

The number to ring is 01278683243 so let's be having you.

HLS - Trinity Waters 17.03.19

Todays venue was Trinity Waters  and the forecast was good until 10.00 then the winds were to increase and unfortunately the forecasters got it right.

Having arrived slightly later than I normally would, most anglers were already unloaded or unloading with the exception of Tax Man Brian who is constantly last and always the last to pay his fees and he still owes me 50 pence!!

The biggest surprise on my arrival was how quiet it was, no bellowing or the sight of the pink bobble hat, then it dawned on me that The Guru Tart was away again, visiting Jersey this time - oh how blessed they were to have his presence.

We were blessed with Steve Warren again following a useful start last time out, Dick who had a trailer on his BIKE - Sorry I didn't get a photo of this, and the return of Dettol after a 4 week absence due to the immaculate cleansing of his equipment that was required after he found a spec of dust on his seat box. I paid my fees and had a nice cuppa only to see Dettol looking whiter than snow and he had to sit down, why was this?, well Mario Tony had put his well used equipment next to his covered in mud, you could just see Dettol working out a payment plan to charge for the cleansing of Mario's equipment. So a total of 16 Anglers booked n for todays scrap but were missing Eric - recovering from catching silvers last week, Guru Tart on holiday again and class angler Dave Allen.

I had a quick chat with the guys from the Dads Army group about Wednesday of which they all enjoyed even though Mutant George spent the first hour picking maggots from the ground after spilling them on the floor. Im attending this weeks match  just to try and bring the average age down - oh and to get some tips.

So off to the draw as follows

Golden Peg nos 28

Peg nos

6 - Last Hour Dave
7 - Danny
8 - Dettol
10 - Sausage
11 - Sharp Shopper Shane
13 - Tax Man Brian
14 - Mario Tony
15 - Nice Guy Rich
24 - Tony Fry
25 - Graham
26 - Steve warren
27 - Queenie
28 - Dick
29 - Mutant George
30 - Lord C
31 - Me

So I was blessed with an acre of free space to my left and Lord C to my right. I must admit I do like watching Lord C angling , good guy and a good fisherman I can learn from him. Opposite I had Danny who is always in the mix on the silvers and opposite right I had Dettol. Unfortunately I could see anglers on the opposite bank but nothing on my side. It appeared that those on the opposite bank were fishing the tip with the wind in their faces except Danny who as normal all out for those pesky silvers. So the all in was shouted from the Guru Tart - yes I know he was in Jersey but we still heard him.

Danny was straight in but unfortunately into a carp which managed to escape his grasp, then mutant George into some small silvers. Lord C went out on the tip after initial pole line feed and I was deciding whether to go 13m or 11m. I fed at 11 m but I was being lazy with only one line hoping to catch the bream, that was a bad decision. Fishing was hard with the odd person picking a few carp but Danny was being productive on the silvers. After 2 hours I had a spell of catching and though Id finally worked out what was wanted but the it died again. Dettol hooked into  large carp on the pole and successfully managed to land it. I could see in the corner of my eye that nice guy Rich was catching a few carp and Lord C now on the pole was hitting form and catching a few nice bream.

Queenie then appeared on the scene, not by catching but by having a stroll saying that he found it really hard. He said he didn't want to go on the tip as this was boring and all he thought about was naughty thoughts and erections - his words not mine. I guess that for the remainder of the match he continued about these thoughts as he went back out on the tip.

The final hour the wind gut worse but Lord C was still catching so who was going win?

The scales went around the lake and there was a clear winner on the overall front and it couldn't have been awarded to a nicer guy than Rich. Mario Tony who is always there or there about managed second, and after missing out for the last couple of weeks on the trot by a few ounces, Queenie beat Dettol by a measly 1 ounce, now if Dettol hadn't been messing about and playing his carp on knicker elastic for 30 minutes then that fish wouldn't have lost so much weight and he would have took 3rd.

The silvers front was also clearly won with Danny in 1st, Lord C in 2nd and a good effort by Dick for third.

Results as follows

Overall -

1st - Nice Guy Rich - 48-01
2nd - Mario Tony - 28-15
3rd - Queenie - 20-5

Silvers

1st - Danny - 21-01
2nd - Lord C - 9-07
3rd - Dick - 8-11

Next Sunday is at Shiplate Fishery on the main lake - draw at 09.00

This Wednesdays match is at Sedges on Tile (one with the Islands) - 09.00 draw

Sunday 10 March 2019

Sunday 10th March - Sedges

Today we returned to the Sedges fishing on Tile Lake, which as like the last time we fished here, it was blowing gale force winds. The side of the lake with pegs 21-30 were going to be favoured as this was sheltered and was like a mill pond compared to the waves like the Bristol channel from the other side. You could sense the dread of drawing in the 30,s and those with their drawing arms on fire in previous weeks would wish for that to continue today.

17 dedicated foolish members attended today to fish these dreadful conditions and we were also joined by 2 new members in Steve W and John W.

The golden peg was drawn which was 33 then we all dived in to try and avoid the 30's. I was first in and was apprehensive but fortunately drew 22 on the sheltered side which I was more than pleased with.

The draw was as follows

Peg

21 - Steve W
22 - Me
23 - Dave Allen
24 - Danny
25 - Sharp shopper hane
26 - Tax Man Brian
27 - The Guru Tart
28 - Eric
29 - Tony F
30 - Graham
31 - Mutant Turtle
33 - Last Hour Dave
35 - John W
36 - Lord C
37 - Mario Tony
39 - Queenie
40 - Nice Guy Rich

So I was fortunate to have the inform Class Angler Dave Allen next to me, perhaps I could find out the key to his success of recent weeks? To my right I had new boy Steve W who was really sheltered and had a great carp peg in the corner.

The wind seemed to get worse and worse as we got closer to the all in and then a shower of rain - how I did feel for those on the far side - did I heck as like. On pegs 21-30 we could use the pole or tip, but that wasn't at all possible on the far side although George did fish just the top 2 for silvers.

So the hooter sounded and as of last week I just went to feed my 2nd line and straight away Dave Allen was in, after he had landed then Steve was in. I went on the tip for 30 mind and had a few knocks but my intention was for silvers today so went over  my feed on my first line with maggots. I was picking up bits and pieces but Danny was flying with some decent Bream. Dave then hooked another carp that he landed so he had 2 in the first 30 mins. He then went on the pole after seeing Danny land a few more and straight away he was into some blades before losing a carp then a few Bream before landing a chunk of a carp. I had fen my second line and left to rest for 3 hours then went over the top on pellet. I started a run of some nice bream then landed 2 carp before losing 2. In the mean time Dave and Steve were catching Carp with Dave also getting a fish a chuck. I could see a few on the other side catching but not with the regularity of those next to me.

So the hooter went and Dave was still playing a carp which he successfully landed and overall had a great days fishing and to be honest it was great to watch a class angler catching so well albeit annoying that it wasn't happening for me.

So to the weigh in and Steve W on his first match did well with 48-10 and a mention to George who managed 12-10 on top 2. I don't know how Nice Guy Rich did it but he caught 59.03 even with spending half his time retrieving his rigs from the trees putting the birds more at risk than the fish.

So to the results

Overall

1st - Dave Allen - 77-1
2nd - Queenie - 76-14
3rd - Mario Tony

Silvers

1st - Danny  - 31-10
2nd - Eric - 18-04
3rd - John W - 15-05

So for the Third week in a row Dave took the honours and for the second week in a row beat Queenie by a few ounces and how bitter he was about it bemoaning all the way to his car. Maybe we should start calling him Lemon or Citrus from now on.

Next week we are back to Trinity on the Main Lake

Next up Shiplate Lakes - 13.03.2019

Monday 4 March 2019

Summerhayes Fisheries 3rd March 2019

So today we were at my local venue of Summerhayes Fisheries and with the forecast being that of gale force winds and heavy rain with the emergence of Hurricane Freya I'm surprised that anyone even bothered to get out of bed.

It was just unfortunate that  the last time out at this venue the conditions were also very windy and the lakes were more like the Bristol Channel with the choppy waves, albeit then we were on Sellicks but today we were on Longs Match Lake

I got there nice and early and hoping the forecast was going to be wrong and already there was an abundance of anglers in the car park. There was also a match on Sellicks today so twice the amount of foolish anglers braving the conditions. With the wind in a S-SW direction the most comfortable swims would be roadside with the wind being from behind.

I unloaded my car to try and get a quick cuppa only to find that I hadn't loaded my rods. A quick phone call to the one indoors but with no answer, I had no option to scoot back home and collect them.

So back to the hut and still without my cuppa and with Pete cooking bacon baps which smelt fabulous, the Guru Tart asked me to round up the troops for the draw. On my way to round them up I was subjected to some unwarranted banter about my local venue and with more wind coming out of Queenies gills than Storm Freya could offer the 15 brave anglers who were waiting in anticipation commenced with the draw.

Peg 4 -Eric, 7 - Lord C, 9 Mario Tony, 11 Danny, 12 Queenie, 15 T Fry, 17 Tax man Brian, 19 G Sparkes , 21 - Sharp Shopper Shane, 24 Me, 27 Last Hour Dave, 31 The Guru Tart, 35 Dave Allen, 37 Kev, 39 Mutant George

As per every week and confirmed by Lord C and Queenie - everyone had the winning peg apart from Sharp Shopper Shane who was on Golden Peg.

So Me, Dave Allen, Last Hour Dave, were on roadside and Sharp Shopper Shane on 21  were relatively comfortable with the others up against it. Shane called me over and asked if I would like a little side bet to which I duly obliged. I couldn't see too many fishermen to see what was happening around me but I could see Shane, Geoff and Tax Man. The hooter went for the all in and It wasn't The wind stayed behind us for a couple of hours then changed direction and was blowing form right to left so after fishing 14.5m dobbing bread and losing 2 carp I then had to revert to the tip ( not a good silvers peg this one). Shane got off to a flier on the tip with 2 fish in the first hour then went quiet for the rest of the day and after losing the second carp it took a bit of time to get anything else but I ended up with a good spell in the middle of the match landing 3 carp and then packed up 45mins early after throwing my dummy out of the pram when my line broke when into another carp. I could see Last Hour Dave having a few good tussles and landed a few decent carp but he also lost a few and I could see Tax Man playing a few fish. Geoff was having a reasonable day for the silvers on 19 as he always manages on this lake.

Just after Lunch the Guru Tart starting packing up and he stopped behind me to tell me he snapped a section of pole and he had enough. I could see Mario packing up followed by a few more and I was just happy that I had not broken my pole and glad when the all out was called.

Out of the 15 who started, only 9 finished the match with only 7 weighing in and the others DNW.

Having packed up early myself Danny and Lord C started the weigh in. The rumour was D Allen smashed it, but was then told Brian was close along with Queenie for the overall weights. The rumours were actually spot on that the weights were a close call with Dave on 41-08, Tax Man - 42-01, Queenie 42-01 however Tax man had caught a 2 oz Rudd and Dave Allen had 2-01 of skimmers.

The silvers was a bit different affair with not a great amount showing.

So the results were follows

Overall

1st - Dave Allen  43-09
2nd  - Tax Man Brian 41-03
3rd Queenie 41- 01

Silvers

1st - Geoff Sparkes
2nd - Mutant George
3rd - Danny

So Dave Allen form is still bang on In form and with quality anglers Queenie and Taxman also constantly framing, its time to up our game.

On Georges 68th birthday he managed 2nd and more importantly his beloved £1 nugget from Danny.

My reward - well I also got my nice shiny nugget from the Sharp Shopper - no doubt hell be out to find more bargains this week as he has £1 less to spend this week.

Well done to everyone for their perseverance and we look forward to seeing you at The Sedges on Sunday on Tile Lake. For Info the long range forecast for next week - yes more windy weather.
