Sunday 28th January 2018 - Avalon fisheries

Sunday 28/1/2018 Avalon
Today the HLS gang were at Avalon fisheries and I must say that this is one of my favourite venues that we go to as you never know where the winner will come from. Before we begin with the blog we had a meeting  Fridays night and one of the points was the payouts, it was decided by the members that there will be payouts only for the top 2 overall and top 2 silvers ....so if you got 3rd  you would get no coin !!!!
Anyway I paid my pools to Shane and dipped my nets and then had a walk and i said to Lord C that it was going to be hard today and I thought if you got 40lbs today you would win and silvers would be won with 13lbs ....On returning  to the car park Vic had sorted out the pegs (1-33) and I was hoping for  high draw...
The golden pegs today were 1 and 20 and I thought that they might go today as they are both good carp pegs
Into the bag of dreams and peg 7 was looking at me!! I was fairly happy as I had the end of the first island which should bring in a carp or 2!!
I had Paul (Paxo baits) next door on peg 9 and the other side I had Eric on peg 6 !!! Looking up to see who was on peg 14 and it was "The best silvers angler in the club" so he could be hard to beat today but I did ask if he wanted a pound on it and he said "no"!!
Lord C and the best silvers angler in the club !!
I set up 2 tip rods to fish towards the end of the island  and also 3 pole rigs to fish at 13 meters  and 1 to fish down the edge ..the 13 meter line I would fish ground bait at 2 o'clock and  pellet at 10 o'clock..so all bases covered ..ha!
At the all in I put some ground bait on the 2 o'clock pole line and also micro pellet on the 10 o'clock  line ..and went out on the feeder ...and it just sat there ,  still nothing a hour later ..um it going to be a hard day !!!!
Looking around and I could only see the odd fish being caught but saying that it was more that what I had ...2 hours in and I had my first fish  a small skimmer on the pellet line then a carp and then missed a bite ...a hour later I had a 1.5lbs skimmer on the tip and that was my lot !!! I lost loads of hook lengths today as the end of the island is a snag pit!!! So a bit gutted as i do love it here ..but the water is liquid ice so i was expecting it to be hard and boy it was!!
Me and Vic started the scales on peg 33, Danny had the top silvers with a cracking 11-8 and Ross also having a great day catching 10-2. Over on our side Tony had 26-6 of carp and Eric had 22-4 of carp...
1st overall Tony
2nd  overall Eric
1st silvers Danny
2nd silvers Ross
3rd silvers "the best angler in the club"  oh yes we were just paying the top 2 ...sorry George

Not sure what I did wrong today but that's fishing, next week we are at Shiplate farm (main lake) so if you what to fish  please book in with Phil (the guru tart)
So well done to all that framed on a very hard day
Also,
Following the HLS Extraordinary Meeting on Friday January  26th, it was decided by the members that Tony Fry will take up the position of Chairman with immediate effect. Thank you to everyone who attended..

Wednesday 24th January 2018 - Sedges Tile

Dad's Army were fishing Sedges today, and luckily we were on Tile, which meant most of the lads were sheltered from the extremes of the weather.    Alas two, namely "Bend It" and myself, had the full frontal of the wind and rain.

There were eleven of us fishing, and despite everything the lads were having the craic, parting with their money willingly??  Jamie was paid,  all the hot drinks consumed, and it was off to the bank.   At that moment it decided to bucket it down, that's Sods Law.

Tivi drew the Golden Peg number twenty four, he commented it was safe enough, but time would tell.   I shouted all in, and immediately Bend It was landing a skimmer, the bad news for him, it was the first of only three he caught all day,and this on the peg he won when he was last here with fifty pounds plus.

Bend It and I were viewing the opposite bank with envy.  With about an hour to go, he decided to exercise his gout and get warm on the far bank.    He returned with the news that everyone was catching, which was great, as it meant the fish were coming on to feed after, what has been a long lean spell for most of us.

I was so cold I had to be reminded to shout the all out.    Jamie weighed us in, and there was a definite rise in the average weights.

Super star Big Bird won overall with 25lbs 1oz, and his was the best silver weight also.   Bolton George won silvers by default, with Wee Willy second.   It was good to see new boy Mustard get second overall, as he professes to only catching fish intermittently!

Full results below.   Well done the lads.

Next Wednesday it's Trinity, The weather is improving.

Sunday 21st January 2018 - Trinity Woodlands

Well it was back to Bridgwater for the weekly HLS match and boy was it wet!! the weather girls were right when they said "Rain all day" , it didn't stop all day until 3 o'clock which was handy for the weigh in !!..
So with my pools paid me and lord C when for walk around the lake, one end was flat calm and the other was choppy

We both wanted peg 2 or any corner pegs as there always some carp in these areas or in the middle for the silvers ..i was one of the last to draw and got peg 32 so a short walk ..I had Bolton George next door on 31 and he was telling me that he was the best silvers angler in the club and also he would beat me today ...so i asked if he would like to fish for a pound and he agreed as we both thought we would be out of the frame on the silvers front today ...also i felt bad for beating him at emeralds for the golden peg !! well for about 5 seconds ...
Golden peg today were pegs 2 "Paul" (Paxo baits) and peg 21 (top silvers man Danny)  and i thought that they would go today !!
I had a few spare pegs  to my left so i felt i had a bit of room, i could see Paul on peg 2 (Paxo baits) and he was going to fish for carp down to his right ...John was on peg 6 and Rob on 8 ..i set up a bomb and pellet  (never had a bite ) and a rig for 13m and 1 for down the edge (never had a bite) ..
The guru tart was on a real flyer again !! peg 17 ...Martin was on peg 10 and i fancied him to have a few silvers ....
At the all in i put 6 balls of ground bait on the 13m line and went out on the tip ..after 30 minute i got bored so had a look on the pole line ...first bite was a 10lbs carp so happy day ..Paul (Paxo baits) on peg 2 was doing  magic tricks were he had 2 meters of elastic out of his pole and the carp would some how unhook itself ?? he was so good at it he did it 4 times in a row !!!
Tony on peg 15 was having a great day catching carp down the edge towards peg 16 and the guru tart was also having a few (solid!!!) Rob on peg 8 started slow but was in the groove after a hour and was catching well ..George was showing me why he's the best silvers angler in the club catching white bait !!! and Paul (Paxo baits) was still doing his magic tricks (8 carp) .
The rain was a real pain today but that's winter fishing and it's better than sitting at home
I ended my day with 3 carp and bits and a broken landing net handle!!! but would it beat George ???
At the all out i packed up fast and put my wet gear in the car.. myself, Danny and lord C did the scales and started with Paul (paxo baits) who had 29-9 and a lot of scales !!! Rob on peg 8 had a fantastic day catching 34 lbs of skimmers (top man!!) then lord C had 7-10 of silvers ..Tony on peg 15 had 56lbs of carp and then the guru tart on fancied peg 17 had 123-9 of carp sorry i mean 23-9 !!!then it was Bolton George  !!!! he put on 4-11 of white bait and one carp which was  13-13lbs  i was thinking i would be handing over a pound to him but i had 6-4 lbs of silvers to nick another pound from the best silvers angler in the club !!! also my 3 carp went 28-0lbs ...
well done that man !!! 34 lbs

1st overall  Tony

2nd overall me ( S King)

3rd overall Paul (paxo baits)

1st silvers Rob ( great catch mate!)

Wednesday 17th January 2018 - Emeralds

It's Wednesday again  The wind is a steady forty mph, and during our match we experienced hail, rain, and even some sunshine.  Because of the conditions we switched to fishing Emerald Lake instead of the more exposed Jade.   There were ten of Dad's Army prepared and tooled up, and Danny pegged the swims to be fished.

Alan was paid, and all the business completed, so it was time to get on with the important bit, catching fish!!   The Golden Peg was number one, it was drawn by John.  George drew the fancied peg number four, and Danny was on carp peg number nine.

Horny tooted and we were all in.   I was on the car park swim for the third time following, and could not see much of what was happening.   I caught a few silvers and a couple of carp for 8lb 3oz, and thought that was great after last Sunday's 11ozs.

At the all out Danny, John, and Mustard got on with the weighing.  I think the end results were very good for the conditions fished.  George won the silvers with 10lbs 15ozs, and the overall went to The Sheriff who fishes for silvers, but caught 52lbs 8ozs of mostly carp.

Well done to all who turned out,  despite the weather we had a good days fishing.

Next Wednesday we visit Sedges Tile.

                            Let's do it.

Sunday 14th January 2018 - Sedges Tile Lake

We fished at Sedges Tile this Sunday, seventeen turned out on what was another cold morning.   Bill Parker came along to help with the monetary things, and Horny did the pegging bit.   The business was completed and we went for the draw.  Martin and myself drew the Golden Pegs numbers 21 and 39.

Horny tooted and we were all in, but nothing much happened.   After an hour our new member Alan started catching some silvers on peg 38, and Bend It got busy with the carp on 40.   I had a very exciting day, amassing the great total of 11ozs of whitebait!  On my left Bend It, fishing the waggler, with a 2lb line straight through, caught 53lbs 11ozs for first overall, this included a carp weighing 19lbs 8ozs; well done that man!

On my right, Alan won the silvers, with a hard earned 3lbs 10ozs, which beat Danny by ounces.     The full results are below.

On Wednesday we visit Emeralds Jade-Specimen Lake, and
Sunday next it's Trinity, please phone Phil.

Thursday 11 January 2018

Wednesday 10th January 2018 - Avalon

What a change in the weather, the sun was shining, not much wind, and nine degrees;  he must be looking down on Dad's Army.  Ten of us fished, all in good cheer, parting with their ackers, George rather reluctantly

The business was completed and it was time for the draw.    Danny chose the pegs, the golden one was number eleven, which was drawn by Rob.   We were well spread out, and hoped for a reasonable catch.  Only one of the ten was fishing for carp,   no surprise it was Ninja Eric.

I got seventeen with Mustard on my right, who still has not got a pole!   Three pegs to my left was the Nasty Old Sheriff.

At the all in, from the start it was a repeat of Sunday, with lots of small roach on a single maggot.   Mustard was catching a little better quality with caster, and the Sheriff was getting his usual good bag on peg twenty.

The guys were strangely quiet, maybe because they were spread out, or could it be they were catching fish.   At the all out , it was pack up and on with the scales.   I was expecting a close finish.

Ninja on peg twenty caught all the carp in the match, and took overall with 22lbs 6ozs   The silvers were won by Danny, just 2ozs in front of Rob on the golden peg, and 3ozs in front of me, with all the other weights close behind;  a proper match.   Full results below.

On Sunday it's Sedges, and next Wednesday we return to Trinity.

Monday 8 January 2018

Sunday 7th January 2018 - Trinity Woodlands

On the first Sunday of the new year we were fishing Trinity on a very cold frosty day.   There were just fifteen of us competing, and we didn't expect a lot of weight to weigh in.

Horny arrived with the entry sheet, and Danny had the peg numbers sorted;  which left just the dosh to collect, Misha to be paid, then we were all set for the draw.    The Golden Pegs were twelve and seventeen, which were drawn by Tony Newell and Shaun.

I was next to Kev, who was up to his usual tricks, saying he had forgotten his landing net, borrowing one, then finding his own inside his keep nets.   Shaun on my left needed half an acre to fit all his pristine gear into.    I thought I would take out one top kit and try to compete.

There was not much to report today, Terry "the Hereford" Bull won overall, with 24lbs 3ozs, and Bend It took the silvers with 10lbs 8ozs.    Well done to all who braved such a very cold day.

On Wednesday we visit Avalon, and next Sunday it's Sedges.

Saturday 6 January 2018

Wednesday 3rd January 2018 - Viaduct Campbell

The weather forecast was for something unmentionable and I thought it madness as I reluctantly left my  warm bed.   It was Viaducts Campbell, I had spoken to Matt about pegging with the gale at our backs;  the lad's breathed a sigh of relief when I told them.

The peg number everybody wanted was 132, apparently where the fish were holding, and the area least affected by the wind.   The man with the sticky fingers was Bend It, who justified it's favoritism by winning overall.

The Bad Old Sheriff on the next peg took the silvers, with a credible 14 lbs 11 ozs;  the rest of us were also runs.  On the bright side the weather was not so bad, with not a moan or complaint all day.  It was Dad's Army on a Wednesday so I would expect nothing else.

Our first Sunday of 2018 is at Trinity, followed on Wednesday by a visit to Avalon.    I hope to see some of you on Friday night at the A G M.

P.S.  Sorry no results sheet.

Monday 1 January 2018

Sunday 31st December 2017 - Emerald Pools

EMERALD POOL 31/12/20017

So it was the last match of 2017 with the HLS crew and i was looking forward to this match as we only had 11 so it was going to be on emerald lake ...full of silvers lovely !!!! We paid are pools and i collected the golden peg money and there was a great atmosphere at the drew as we were all buzzing as it was party time at Shanes house !!!

Anyway the golden peg today would be peg 3 (the peg by the life buoy) and to be honest i would say it was one of the best peg for silvers on the lake, so if you had a good angler on it today then the it would go!! Luckily for us Bolton George drew it .

I drew peg 9 (on the island ) and was fairly happy and i would be targeting only silvers but looking over to the other side of the bank there were some good silver anglers in the form of Baz on peg 1 , Lord C on peg 2,  Bolton George peg 3 (the best peg) , Danny on peg 4 and Tony on peg 5.

I had Paul ( sponsored by Paxo ) next door also on the island and Mike to my left but i felt the silver winner was definitely coming from pegs 1-4 (peg 3 being the best silvers peg on this venue )

My plan was to fish 1 line  short  and 2 line longer at 11 meters, 1 in open water with micro and maggots and 1 next to the aerator with ground bait and maggots ..while setting up i had a look at Pauls (sponsored by Paxo) ground bait and was surprised to see that he was only using red ground bait but adding 50% sage and onion  !! He was very cagey but i got a photo of this new ground bait with its new and  improved recipe !!! Sorry Paul (sponsored by Paxo) but the secret is out mate!!!

At the all in i put a ball of dead reds and ground bait by the aerator and a ball of micros and a few reds into the open water line and went straight out onto the short line half expecting it to go straight under but it didn't but after 15 minutes it did and i had a small skimmer, 40 min i had 3 skimmers so out onto the ground bait line and it was a bite a chuck but only small white bait ..so got my head down and went for it 2 hours in and it just stopped so a top up and then had a look on the pellet line. I picked up a better stamp fish here  but had to wait 5-10 minute !! ahh what to do !!! Back onto the ground bait line and they were back ...but small !!!!

Meanwhile pegs 1-4 were also catching well but it was peg 3 (best peg on the venue) who was banging them out as every time i looked at George he had his elastic out 3 feet and i was thinking that i would have to pay him the golden peg money today and with £1723.50 in the tin it was worth winning !!

Meanwhile John on peg 11 was having a great day fishing for carp and also Tony was also having a few. With  45 minutes to go Lord C on peg 2 went for carp down his edge and had a few as we both thought George on peg 3 had 50-60 lbs if not more, and the golden peg ...

At the all out we started the scales on peg one with Baz who had 14-8 of silvers and a few carp for 29-6  and then onto Lord C who was admitting to 20lbs of silvers and for once he was almost right as he had 18-2 and  22-10 of carp then it was onto George on peg 3 (best peg on the venue) he had 8 lbs of carp and then he had a problem ...George pulled his silver net out with a big  groan  and put them on the scales and we all looked thinking 50-60 ...the  digital screen only to see 19.00 ..WHAT he said only 19.00 ....um yes mate !!! But he was still in the lead on the silvers and a bumper pay day for winning the silvers golden peg   (it turns out that he is using the new 1 hollo from Preston and by the looks of it a 1oz roach pulls out 3 feet of elastic)  then it was onto Danny who had 14-6 of silvers and 6-5 of the carp for 20-11 and then onto  Tony who had the last peg on that side and he had 20-15 of carp and 7-10 of silvers ...so Lord C on peg 2 had won overall in their section (1-5) and George had won the silvers on peg 3 (best peg on the venue)

Onto our side and Shane on peg 6 had 15-2, Bob on 7 had 18-5 and Mike on peg 8 had 14-7 meanwhile George was on his phone to his wife telling her to book a weeks holiday in the sun as he just picked up the golden peg money (£1723.50) ! on  a crap peg ...god that boy's good, then it was onto me (peg 9) Mike pulled out my only carp for 4-6 and then he put on my silvers which went 20-13 which stopped  George in his tracks and back on the phone to his wife telling her to book a week in the rain in Bridgwater instead !! Paul (Paxo baits) next door had 11-10 and then John on peg 11 had a great day with 54.0 to win overall (well done mate!)

On our side John won overall with 54.0 and i won the silvers with 20-13 happy days !!!

Well it was a great day and a close match and with plenty of laughter (sorry George) with a great bunch of lads ..

I hope you all have a great 2018 and thanks for all the great banter in 2017 !!!

Friday is the AGM at the 37  club , meeting will start at 19.30
