Viaduct - Cambell - 23.02.2020

Todays trip was to the popular venue of Viaduct where the fishing can produce some big wieights with some large angry carp and a good head of silvers can be caught.

The forcast on Saturday indicasted that the winds would be ok and dropping and when I arrived there was a ripple across the water that lead me to think that fishing could be ok if you get the right swim. I unloaded my gear and picked up my casters that I had pre-ordered and had a chat with the guys.

Everyone arrived on time and we even managed to get a slightly earlier draw hich have a bit more time to set up.  At this point the wind had seemed to increase a litte and the ripples had increased slightly.

George was seeking advice from resident angler Rob Eagles and then kept moaning (unlike George) about his peg even before he fished it, I felt for Sausage having to put up with that all day.

The golden peg was drawn which was peg 128

Draw as follows

Peg

110 - Kev Hayes
110 - Rich Coles
112 - TonyFry
113 - George Fletcher
114  - Paul Bowyer
115 - Shane Western
116 - Danny
118 - Nige
119 - Stan Butt
123 - Steve King

127 - Eric
128 - Tony Newell
129 - Dave Tungstall
130 - Steve warren
131  -Martin Western
132 - Brian Chivers

With the wind blowing from 123 - 131 across the lake this was a disatourous draw as I had the wind in my face and the ripple had turned into the Bristol Channel. On my way to my peg the 110 - 115 section was sheltered but after this it wasnt nice. The other side of the lake seemed to have calm waters with winds off of their backs Stan was in the corner next to me and he set up o simple days fishing on the tip. I however, still thought I could use the pole. During set up the wind got worse and then there was fine misty rain and without my brolly today I knew I should have satyed at home.

On the all in Stan foul hooked and lost a fish but it wasnt long before he was into a decent bream and Steve King fish the opposite corner at 14.5m down the edge landed a couple of carp. Not much going on from the people I could see throughout the match with the exception of Stan and Steve King.

For me - nothing to report apart from 3 small roach, a perch and a tench. Nothing on the tip. Looking at the results the top end of the lake produced the goods  and for thoses at the bottom end ended up with wind burnt faces and a successful day not losing or breaking any equipment.

Executive Committee Meeting

An Executive cCommittee meeting was held on Thursday 20th February.

Items discussed as per below.

  1. Membership
There were 10 persons requesting to become new members of the club. There are currently 31 members making the potential of 41 members. It was discussed what the impact that this would have on current members and the venues that were currenty being fished. Most venues that we fish could manage between 18-20 pegs and the currently in the winter we are fulfilling about 18 members. The summer months often see an increase in numbers and it would be very difficult to incorporate all members and therfore it was decided to keep the membership numbers as current with a view that we will revisit this later in the year.

    2.  Finances

The annual finace report has been submitted following the 2020 AGM

    3.  Match Day Secretary

It was discussed that ALL persons who want to fish a match will contat the Match Day Secreatary - Steve Warren directly and not through other members.

All 2020 fixtures have now been confirmed and members will be informed of any changes. 2021 Fixtures have also been completed with the exception of the away day.

Avalon 16.02.2020

Todays Match was held at Avalon Fishery. With Storm Dennis making his presence on Saturday evening and forcast well in to Sunday, the numbers were very short indeed with only 10 booked in up until Friday. We ended up with 12 members fishing and to be fair conditions were not overly too bad. The slight wind was blowing directly down the lake and up until the draw the rain held off.

The decision was taken to use both side of the lake as the normal non road side was very wet and really did look to be a peat bog, but after swim 4 the area did firm a little.

To my surprise there was no Danny this week which is the first time since Ive been with the club that I think he's missed a match so i stood in and took the names

I didnt draw my peg this week and with 3 tokens left in the bag, there was Steve King, Martin and myself left to draw. Martin pulled the golden peg and I was secretly wanting peg 1 as to avoid the boggy walk; however with a grin bigger than a cheshire cat, in walked Steve King with nos 1 so I was left with unlucky 13.

The golden peg was drawn and this was peg 16

Draw as follows

Peg

1 - Steve King
5 - Shane Western
7 - Steve Warren
9 - Tony Newell
11 - Tony Fry
13 - Nigel
15 - Dave Tungsten
16 - Martin Western
42 - Dave Allen
44  -George Fletcher
46 - Paul Bowyer
48 - Phil Beards

After a labourious walk to my peg which was only half way along the bank and a required couple of stops I was please to have an end of island chuck, however I have drawn this before and the carp do come in. At this time the wind was ok and the rain had stopped for a bit so I gambled on 2 x 13m lines to my left and righ and a 10m line straigt out in front. I also set up the tip for the island . 13m wasnt out of the question today and on the all in I balled in micros and 4mm to my left and corn to my right which I fed on the hour every hour hoping to get a few stray carp. On the 10m line i did a groundbait and maggot line incase the tip didnt work, again topping up on the hour.

At 9.50 I was just getting my keepnets to put in and the hooter sounded the match which created confusion as this was 10 mins early. Apparently joker King had told the Guru Tart it was time to start and he sounded off (nothing new there then) then decided to check his watch. So with anglers still putting n their nets we did start the match 10 mins early. I fed my 3 lines and then tip to the island. By the time i put my rod down and bairly the bait hitting the bottom, the tip went around and I landed a carp to about 3lb. next chuck I had another about the same size. It then went quiet for 30 mins and to my right I could see Tony Fry into some rod bending action and I beleive that he caught a couple on the bounce.

To my left, Dave Tungstil seemed to be struggling on his 10m line and with the wind slightly increasing I thought to myself should I have bothered with these lines. The start of the next hour saw me have 3 fish by having to cast short of the island and then against the island and had to rotate this through the match to keep me catching. After 1 pm it went quiet for and hour so i tried my 3 pole lines but not a sign so after 45mins I went back on the tip. Straight away another fish,  a better carp to about 6 lb this time then a tench, bream and a couple of carp to the end of the match. My clicker said about 50lb athough Iwas only admitting to 30lb.

To the left of Dave I could see Martin having a good spell to the end with some decent skimmers and a couple of carp. To my right Tony also had a few fish near the end.

I managed to pack up and have a good days fishing and waited in anticipation for the scales. The talk was that the Guru Tart lost as many as he caught and that if he stooped using cotton as a hook length he may have landed a few more, but a few struggled on that side of the bank.

Martin had a cracking net of silvers including a Bream of 5.5lb and I can only appologise for not having any photos to show. It must have been very frustrating for Dave sitting next to him watching him land fish after fish.

09.02.2020 - Sedges

Match cancelled due to bad weather

Shiplate Fishery - 02.02.2020

Todays meeting was at the ever popular Shiplate Fishery in Bleadon. This time last year we were breaking ice off of the lake, but in a total contrast, the weather was fine but there was a keen northwesterly wind whch was blowing from one side of the lake to the other. If you were lucky to get pegs 9 -15 you would be in for a comfortable day but if you were on the other then fishing would be cold.

There was a great turn out today of 18 anglers with their names in the draw.

I was the first to arrive today quickly followed by a convoy of other vehicles and it wasnt long before the carpark was full and the overflow one was in use. As well as HLS on the main lake, all the other ponds were being fished on today.

I unloaded my gear and spoke with Mario Tony and our wishes for the day were to pull a peg an the far bank, catch a couple and finally was to have a framing peg, so not asking for too much. I paid my fees and gave out some fixtures and membership cards and then managed to grab a quick cup of tea.

The Guru tart turned up in  a bright red pair of trainers but had decisded to leave the bright pink ones of last week at home due to the amount of abuse that he had received. The last 2 we were waiting on today were Ex-chairman and John Bradford who finally made the draw on time.

The Golden peg was drawn and out poped 12A, an area that is good for silvers or carp

Draw

2 - Guru Tart

4 - Tony Fry
5 - Stan
6 - Eric

After being the 4th person to draw and pulling out peg 15 I had my wishes answered, the wind on my back and a very good swim that consistantly produces. I was fortunate that no one asked me what peg I had drawn and I avoided the banter by swiftly getting my gear and head off for the long walk.

When I got to the peg It was perfect, flat water, sheletred from the wind and my first task was to remove some of the clothing and put on some factor 50. People have informed me that with this peg, if you cast towards the lawn near the reeds you would bag up. I set up a little bomb with banded pellet - (I was going to use bread but i left that at home). On the pole I set up at 11m in front and found the water at about 5 feet and a margin rig to my left on 2+2 which was barely 2ft deep. So very simple today, micro in front and i micro maggot combi in the margin.

On the all in I shipped out some micros on the 11m line and combi down the edge. The tip was put into action but my cast was a bit short of the target. I left it there for 5mins before a small tug and a mirror to about 6lb. That was possitive so I did the same again only ast to the clip where it sat there doing nothing for the next hour. I as bored of this so thought Id give a go on the 11m line and after 20 mins or so I had a couple of skimmers then a tench. I fed agian and the float sat there for a while before a small dink and a strike and the elastic was off. Now I wouldn't have minded a good day on the skimmers but this was definately going to be a carp area. After carefuly playing this fish I managed to net it at about 15lb. Fed again at 11m then tried before going to the margin which i had been putting in a few maggotts and micros every now and again. Nothing,  so I went out at 11m again and had a browse around the lake. George on 1 who was opposite me was like a fidlers elbow bringing in little ninjas and when I looked across to the Guru Tart he was in the bushes unhooking a branch. From what I could see there wasnt much going on.

The 11m line was doing well, a few more skimmers then a bream of about 3lb before another carp at about 8lb. I fed both line again before putting the tip out whilst I had a cuppa and a sandwich but nothing happened here so I kept on the 11m line until the last hour.

At 2pm I went on the margiin line with tripple maggot, a really shy bite and a strike and I was into a fiesty common. A feed again and a short burst on the 11m line but nothing so back on the margin and again within a few minutes the float dinked and another carp. I had a few more in the margin before the hooter went. A great days fishing for me, with no lost fish.

It was a hard day for most today, certainly those on the near side bank, with lack of fish and a cold wind in their faces
