Wednesday 30th December 2015 - Viaduct Campbell

What a day!!! 50mph winds and rain you do not want to remember.   Eleven very brave lads of Dads Army knowing what to expect, turned out to tackle a very difficult match.   Badger Steve opened the cafe room, and sorted out the peg numbers for the club.  I marked off the names, took the money, then made the draw, asking forgiveness and a low number draw please.

My prayer was answered, I drew peg 112, which was a bit exposed but the wind was on my back.   Nothing fancy today; fished short, feed steady, and hope for skimmers and tench; neither species decided to visit my swim, just a fair amount of small roach and some large carp, which in the process of landing of these I managed to loose a No.3 pole section in the lake.   Danny, being an expert retriever, found and recovered it at the end of the match.   Thank you very much Danny.

At 3-00 o'clock I shouted all out, and the weighing began.   Roger first at peg 110 with 89lbs of  carp, a good start, but not good enough as you will see on the complete results sheet at the end.

Unfortunately there was a downside to what I thought was a good day, showing the spirit and strength of HLS in really adverse conditions.    The most important consideration of all anglers, whether match or pleasure fishing, should be the fish.   Not for the first time we had an overloaded keepnet.   The fishery rules are very clear about this, and when Steve phoned and gave me very severe earache, I assured him this would not happen again.   His response was,  that re-occurrence would mean our club would not be welcome at Viaducts, a sentiment which in his position I must endorse.  "NO ONE WANTS DEAD FISH"   Let's resolve and put this one behind us at the AGM on Friday 8th January .

Next its Sedges Brick where we have a full lake with reserves, then at Emeralds on Wednesday next week.

Looking forward to the week ahead

Sunday 27th December 2015 - Trinity Woodlands

On what started out as a very rainy day 22 anglers arrived and disembarked with their gear.  The chat was good, and the weather improved on what turned out to be a good competition.

It was good to see Micha, who recently became a mum for the first time, having given birth to a healthy girl; her name is Lily.   Micha made the tea,  I took the money and prepared tickets for the draw.   I drew peg 9, which is middle of the far bank,  which is  OK.  I feel the venue is very fair, you  can win from any peg.   My mind was set on an easy match, so nothing fancy;  two rigs, one four sections in front, the other shallower for the margin to my left.   Horny tooted at 10-00, and the session began.   Two small balls of green and micro laced with squats in front, with hand fed castor and maggot to the left.   Fishing dead depth I soon caught some reasonable Roach, which got smaller as time passed, then a bonus Tench of 2lbs.   The day progressed with plenty of bites, which, at the weigh in, produced 12lbs 4ozs of silvers; enough to win the silvers, with not a Carp in sight!!

The guys packed up, and Mike Davis, Danny, and myself completed the weigh in.   The results below.

Next Wednesday we are at VIADUCTS Campbell 9-00 draw

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR

The feedback from Sundays Fur and Feather was 100% good and positive.  A credit to you all that our Club is thriving.

I wish you all the seasons best wishes, and success for the coming year, when  I hope to share your friendship and company at our matches.

Tight lines,

Chair Bob

Our AGM is at 7-30 pm on Friday 8th January 2016 at the 37 Club, come and have  your say,

Wednesday 23rd December 2015 - Avalon Fisheries

Final head count at muster was 20,  all raring to do their duty on a venue we had not fished for a while.  After a cold night, and with a chill wind blowing straight down the lake, expectations were not high.   Vic sorted the pegs 1 to 23, and the draw was made.   The lads made their way to their positions, and readied for the off.   After three trips from the car park to my peg 21, I was feeling k'kd. so when I bellowed all in at 10-00 I was nowhere near ready.    I decided to start on the maggot feeder and the 11 metre pole line as the wind was too strong for this old soldier to manage further out.    After 21/2 hours and 1/2lb of small fish, I put all that gear to one side, and fished the margin.   This produced some more very small fish, and a very large tench which I lost at the net, I guess back to the drawing board!!!

The weigh in was done by Vic, and the weights told the story;  a struggle from start to finish.

MATCH WEDNESDAY 30TH DECEMBER AT VIADUCTS CAMPBELL  DRAW 09-00

Monday 21 December 2015

Sunday 20th December 2015 - Xmas Fur and Feather at Emerald Pools

What a great day for our club of six months.  From 07-00am until 18-30pm, with not a moan or  complaint to be heard (we gagged George)  The lads started arriving at the 37 Club, where the majority took advantage of a very good breakfast   King Steve was collecting and sorting the optional pool money, a good job well done, everything in envelopes and labelled, just like you would expect from a postie.   Tony treasure collected the £5 peg fees, and Danny sat, pen poised, ready to take down the names when the draw was made.  34  entered and 34 turned out, 34 names beside numbers, a small miracle.

So off to the lakes for setting up gear, mixing bait and all the other tasks that fishing entails.  I drew peg 33 which is in front of the chalets, we have never fished these pegs before, so decisions needed to be  made about where to fish.   I decided not to cross to the the island, as it meant breaking down three times with the chalet behind me;  so it was 10 metres in front and the margins.

Horny toots and we got started.  I was doing what I enjoy best, catching roach, but very slowly until midday when slow became stop.   On the day a lot of fish were caught, with the best weights coming from Ruby lake, but I think everyone caught fish.

At the weigh in:-
                           Section A         1st Overall                Tony Fry                           23lbs 8ozs
                                                  1st Silvers                 Dave Tunstall                      6lbs 0ozs

                           Section B         1st Overall                Tony Newall                      46lbs 12ozs
                                                  1st Silvers                 Simon Garbutt                  14lbs  12ozs

                           Section C         1st Overall                Mike Davies                       35lbs 0ozs
                                                  1st Silvers                 Martin Western                      4lbs 0ozs
                                                                                  Bob Pascoe                         4lbs 0ozs

We then went back to the 37 Club for beer, buffet, and rewards for our endeavors, everyone gets lucky.   We had three smashing hampers prepared by Gail Fry as prizes for the section winners, and three tables full of other goodies which Marilyn Gail and Ross had set up while we fished.

After the prizes came the draw for prizes donated to the club, and I would mention Steve Kedge (Somerset Angling) and Steve the Badger (Viaducts Fishery)

This Sunday was not about fishing but friendship, not winning but enjoying our sport with our mates.

I am looking forward to the next match on Wednesday 23rd December at Avalon 9-00 draw.

Wednesday 16th December 2015 - Sedges Tile Lake

Sixteen of the old contemptibles of Dads Army turned up to fish what turned out to be a fair match.       As everyone was early, the draw was brought forward to 08-45,and we fished from 09-45 to 1500
I drew peg 23, and knew from previous results it would be difficult to compete with the lads in the thirties, and  so it turned out.     Top silvers Mike (bend it like Becket) Bendel won with 8lbs 2ozs on peg 35.   The overall went to the Welsh Mercenary Brian Chivers with 66lbs 0ozs, 2nd overall was the oldest swinger in town John Newall with  52lbs 12 ozs.

Well done everyone on a pleasant December days fishing.

Next up is our Christmas Fur and Feather on Sunday 20th.   We meet at the 37 Club at 07-15 for breakfast etc     The draw will be at 08-30, and then on to Emerald Pools to start fishing at 10-00 until 15-00
After the weigh in back to the 37 Club  for drinks, a buffet, prizes, and pools.

Next Wednesday Avalon 09-00 draw

Monday 14 December 2015

Sunday 13th December 2015 - Summerhayes Sellicks lake

A small turnout for what was a difficult match, with fish very hard to come by.   The draw was made at 08-45, and we fished from  09-45 until 15-00.   I drew peg 44, next to King Steve on peg 2,who proceeded to catch small fish from the off.   It took me a good hour before my float disappeared catching a small roach, soon to be followed by a hand sized carp; thank you fish.

The most fancied pegs were 12 to 15,  and so it turned out  At the weigh in Dave Allen on peg 12 weighed in  23lbs 8ozs, to win from the Welsh Mercenary Brian with 20lbs 4ozs.    The silvers was won by Bolton George his weight 4lbs 12ozs (real weight 17stone)

Most important date to remember   AGM FRIDAY 8th JANUARY  at  730pm

Thursday 10 December 2015

Wednesday 9th December 2015 - Shiplate Hawthorns

On a cold but pleasant morning 15 men of Dads Army assembled for another match; 15 being the maximum for the lake.

The lads unpacked their gear, and exchanged their usual verbal abuse, then made their way to the shed for the draw, after-which there were some expected moans from quarters not unexpected, these moaners will be put on report.

Again as all were early we advanced the start to 9-45 fishing to 15-00,more grunts!  I drew peg 9 and had no complaints.   Danny was on 10 so I had to work hard.   After shouting out" All In" the match began.   I decided on no ground bait just loose feed with a single maggot on a 20 hook,it wasn't long before I was catching small roach.   As the match progressed it was obvious big weights were not the order of the day, but my fish kept coming slowly with the occasional bonus of a crucian or skimmer.   On a very pleasant day for December I weighed in a respectable 12lbs 1ozs of silvers, which was well in front of Danny's 6lbs.

The rest of the results were as follows:-   Pete (Robot Duck) Cooke 1st Overall  just beating Bolton George who said he had lost five fish, very careless I thought!!!  The full results are below.

Also........

A working party of 3 Danny, George and myself went to Emeralds to make sure you "Lads were all comfy" on the Xmas match. After 3 hours George and I were knackered, and had to restrain Danny who was acting like a demented wasp with his chainsaw.   I reckon GREENPEACE should keep an eye on Danny; he's definitely a threat to the environment.   Danny also took to the water and was much more easy to control .  A good job done.

                               Keep   Fishing,

Thursday 3 December 2015

Wednesday 2nd December 2015 - Viaduct Spring lake

Another good muster on a very good day weatherwise, I can't believe it's December.  The final count was 18 fine bodied men all geared up, paid up and impatient to make the draw   After the usual banter with Badger Steve and the new streamline Nick Collins, I relieved Steve of the peg numbers, and business commenced.  The draw was made; I drew peg 3, which I was informed should fish well.  Because we had not fished Spring before, there were no complaints from anyone except Bolton George, there's a surprise!!!

I set up two rigs, one for out in front, the other for inside shallow, hoping for the resident perch.  Horney Beards tooted to start us going.   I potted in a small amount of bait and started lowering my rig which continued under the water, when I lifted, a small roach appeared out of the depths, and promptly fell off to go back home.   This was how my day continued, drop offs, snags, and primarily interfering ducks.   I thought the ducks and myself were becoming a personal thing,  I baited up the ducks dived in and ate it, no contest, the ducks won every time!!  I had a very frustrating day, but at the weigh in had a respectable 13lbs 11ozs of silvers.

Bolton George, from his rubbish peg won with 21lbs 2ozs fishing top two, not bad.   Danny was second with 19lbs 2ozs.   Surprisingly there was only a single carp caught all day, and this was half and hour before the end by a very layed back Martin Coombs.

Everyone enjoyed their fishing to various degrees, and the results were quite close, the full results can be seen below as usual.

Next Wednesday we are fishing at Shiplate on Hawthorns, only 15 to fish, so get in quickly!!!

                                            Look forward,

Sunday 29th November 2015 - Sedges

22 Members came to fish at Sedges on Tile lake.   With the wind blowing at between 40 and 50 mph I decided to ask Denise if we could fish both lakes with the wind on our backs, which meant that two unlucky anglers would be fishing into the wind on pegs 39 and 40.   I would like apologise to Tony and Dave who were the unfortunate two.

It turned out to be a contest of two lakes, with Brick winning by a distance.   I got lucky  drawing peg 5 on brick, and starting catching small fish.   Because of the weather I set up just one rig and sections up to number 5, which I found manageable.   Danny on peg 3 was catching regularly, but denying everything as usual!!  He couldn't deny his sausage sandwich blew into the lake, and a flock of seagulls helped themselves to it in their noisy way. On peg 9 Shane Western was collecting quite a weight of sizeable carp as were pegs 8 ad 10 on either side of him.

On Tile they had the best of the weather, but with a lack of fish.   Horny Beards came out on top with a total of 14lbs 5ozs, and Steve King took the silvers with 8lbs 4ozs .

On Brick the match was won by Shane with 100lbs 2ozs,  Danny taking silvers with 24lbs 8ozs .   The lake was won with 54lbs 14ozs by Stan Butt, and the silvers by me with 21lbs 12ozs. The full results are on the sheet below.

Next week it's Bridgwater Fur and Feather, and the following week Sunday 13th at Summerhays Sellicks Lake.  Dads Army is at Viaducts Spring Lake next Wednesday 2nd December.

                                   Let's Enjoy

Wednesday 25th November 2015 - Emerald Pools

Here we go again!!! The men of "Dads Army" all turned up early to fish on what is turning out to be the most prolific venue we visit.    15 of split between Ruby and Sapphire lake.  The weather was not bad, just a bit on the windyside.

The draw was made early, and it was decided to fish 9-45 to 15-00, so everyone made their way to their pegs, myself leaving the car park last as usual.  I had drawn peg 15, and was very happy with my swim, After looking at the water in front of me, I made my decision where to fish, and set about accordingly.  My first swim near a small island proved difficult, because of the wind and light, so I switched to mid water, loose feeding reglarly, and it was not long before a succession of plump roach and rudd were in the net, followed by 3 crucians and 2 very  colourful goldfish.   The inevitable small carp came at regular intervals, making it a very rewarding day.

At the weigh in,  Danny and I started with Sapphire lake where Mike Bendell weighed in 42lbs 4ozs  on peg 1, which looked good enough until Robot Duck Cooke came in with 42lbs 8ozs just 4ozs difference.

On Ruby lake Danny came out on top, with a great weight of 55lbs winning overall, myself taking the silvers by default with 13lbs 12oz.

The complete results are on the sheet below.   As you can see there were six weights over 40lbs from 15 anglers, not bad fishing, well done lads!!!

Next Wednesday we are on Viaducts Spring lake, lets hope for more of the same.

                                            See you then Chair Bob

Monday 23 November 2015

Sunday 22nd November 2015 - Shiplate Main Lake

16 Booked in, 16 turned out on a cold dull Sunday morning, with everyone expecting that catching fish would be very hard.   They were not disappointment, but everyone caught some fish, quite an achievement considering some of the local match reports!

The draw was made and I was left with peg 11.  I set my gear to catch a lot of small fish, with a chance I might get in the frame.  So I blew the whistle and potted in one small ball of ground bait with a few casters and pinkies.   Within three minutes of that the float disappeared, and I was landing a small carp 2 1/2 lbs, not really what I wanted.   After half an hour of catching a few small fish on the eleven metre line,I decided to try the top three where I had been loose feeding caster and maggots, and for the rest of the match  I was kept really busy catching small fish with the occasional 3-4 oz bonus fish.  The weather turned out to be quite pleasant, but I had no great expectations, knowing who were on the better pegs.

Steve and Carol passed on their way to start the weigh-in on Peg 15, and when it came to my turn I was very surprised to see the needle go round to 15lbs 12 ozs of silvers, a really good day's  Winter fishing, and that was good enough to get top silvers.   Rob Eagles on overall, with 15lbs1oz silvers, and 11lbs 1oz of carp, making 26lbs 2ozs on peg 14A.   The full results is on the sheet below.

The entries for the Fur and Feather close on the 1st December   A good turn out for the clubs first one is guaranteed .   I must thank you all for your support.

Next Sunday we are at Sedges on Tile Lake, will see you then.

                                                    Good Fishing

Thursday 19 November 2015

Wednesday 18th November 2015 - Trinity Woodlands

18 Brave men of "Dads Army" mustered on a windswept stormy morning for our weekly drill.  My first task was to select which pegs to fish, but no matter what I chose there was sure to be a lot of flak coming my way and my parentage put in question with a selection of prefixes.  I was not disappointed with some of the names given to me, in fact i'd give 9 out of 10 to the lads for their imagination!!!

My treasure (Tony) collected the cash, paid for the lake and worked out the pools. Next the draw, I drew peg 25 and can't complain with the wind on my back, it really blew a hooligan with presentation of bait nil. I blew the whistle  (horn out of gas) and off we went. From the start it was obvious weights would not be record breaking, bu everyone caught fish. John Barker managed to either break or loose some part of his pole, and retired gracefully, everyone else served their full time until weighed in and dismissed in an orderly fashion.

Bolton George came out top with 19lbs of silvers and 5 1/2lbs of carp with Simon Garbutt winning silvers with 19lbs of skimmer and roach. The full result is below.

Next Wednesday we are on Emerals Pool . Draw 9-0  Please phone  01278683243 if you want to fish, see you then.

Sunday 15th November 2015 - Summerhayes Longs Match Lake

21 HLS Members unloaded their gear on a windy November morning. The money was collected and the draw was made. I drew peg 11, and was reliably informed it was the best skimmer peg on the lake. What happened in the next five hours was a hard earned 3 1/2 lbs of small roach; not my finest match!

Low weights were the order of the day, the top being 15lbs 14ozs caught by Matt Culpin on peg 15.
Top silver was Bolton George with 5lbs 12ozs, most of which consisted of a large perch which "George Said" weighed 3 1/2lbs!!!!

Full results:-

Wednesday 11th November 2015 - Viaduct Lodge Lake

Lodge Lake was fished for the first time by F Troop.  14 signed on and 14 turned out,  bloody marvelous!!!  I must keep on bulling, it seems to get results.

The day was overcast but quite warm for November  The lads were in good form, it was noted our guest Trevor Stark had warts on the palms of his hands, so he was christened ??!!!

Everyone early so the the draw was made at 08-45 and agreed start to the sound of the horn at 09-45 finishing at 15-00.   From the off Danny was catching on peg 68 and  George on 69 was calling him names his mother never called him.   I drew peg 55, a short walk and great shortage of fish.   On my left our treasure Tony had a blank day and to my right Roge Coombs, on 118 had his first inquiry at 14-30, with one large carp at the end.

The fishing got better and some pulled in good fish.  For a change no casualties or breakages to report.

Steve weighed us in, and the results were as follows:-

1st Overall                  John Barker                  peg 66      48lbs 15ozs
2nd    "                       Mike Bendell                 peg 73      33lbs  1ozs

1st Silvers                  Andy Danahay              peg 68       11lbs  4ozs

Sunday 8th November 2015 - Emerald Pools

Emerald Pool Lakes Ruby and Sapphire

21 anglers arrived promptly at the venue and the usual banter started, who would take the others £1, no one talked about winning the match.  Bolton George set off with 20 pegs to indicate the swims, by the time he returned we needed 21, poor George!!!

More members entered and paid for our fur and feather on the 20th DECEMBER. It looks like a probable 30 member turn out. Which is not bad seeing that the club only started in June.

As everyone was early the draw was made at 8-30, and Phil the Horn was persuaded to blast off a little early, after much abuse from his so called mates!

I drew peg 3 on Sapphire so I had nothing to complain about, and when my float disappeared first chuck on double caster, I thought not bad.  Sadly bites slowed down, and it became a struggle until the last hour, and a reasonable 25lbs 8ozs was weighed in.

There were a few messing about with their gear up trees, and Phil managed to break his No.5 section , another expensive day for him.  After 5 hours a good amount of fish were caught the results as follows:-

     1st Both lakes                                 Mike Bendell                43lbs 4ozs
     1st Overall   Sapphire                       George Fletcher            41lbs 4ozs
     1st Silvers   Sapphire                       Dave Allen                    25lbs 12ozs
     1st Overall   Ruby                            Steve King                    35lbs 0ozs
1st Silvers   Ruby                            Andy Danahay             9 lbs 4ozs

Wednesday 4th November 2015 - Emerald Pools

16 of  "Dads Army" trooped out to attempt to conquer "Emerald Pool" for the first time  Ruby and Sapphire were the two lakes to be assulted, and as the time approached  there was much talk about baits and tactics to be used.   Money was collected, and it was decided to pay 1st overall and 1st silvers on both lakes making four payouts.

I drew peg 4 which put me on Ruby,  George immediately said I was on a flyer, as he was the specialist on the venue.   In fact 15 out of 16 had hot pegs, the exception being Bolton George, surprise surprise!!!

The lads made their way to their pegs, and the moans started about stickups and other difficulties another surprise!!?  Phil the Horn had left it at home, so that made myself official starter, and a good toot was sounded at 10-00.

Sapphire lake fished well right from the off, but Ruby struggled to begin with.  The match was a busy affair, with the majority catching well, the outcome being our little TREASURE Tony the Fry top of the pile? or heap? I don't know which.

Sunday 1st November 2015 – Sedges Brick Lake

Back to The Sedges again but on Brick Lake. We all arrived in a gloomy foggy morning unable to see from one side of the lake to the other. 20 names were on the sheet and all turned up except for Andy Rossiter who became badly diseased overnight. Get well Andy!!
We all know that Brick lake has the favourite pegs 8,9,10 & 11 at the northern end and there were large fish topping. I had come again with only silvers in mind as I’m still trying to produce better results. I didn’t mind where I was pegged as I didn’t know of the better silvers pegs. Everyone was ready early and so the draw was done at 8:45. I was second into the pot and out came 9. I guess many will say that it was sacrilege not to fish for the carp. Rob Eagles drew 10 and also admitted that he had come prepared for silvers and so stood at his peg for 5 mins deciding if he should change his mind. On 8 I had Dave Harvey again and so I knew I had a silvers ‘buddy’. Across on the flyer peg 11 was Colin Lambert.
I dragged out the same rigs that I had used the previous week, one for full depth infront at 10m, a shallow rig at the same spot, a margin rig and because we had so much time to set up, I also did a full depth rig at 10m with a band for fishing hard pellet. The bait tray contained caster, maggot, corn, soft and hard pellet. Lastly was the humble worm. I had a lovely bowl of sweet smelling crumb mix which hopefully would attract the bream.

Peg 9…….

Reaching the 10:00am mark, many were questioning the ability of Mr Beards to tell the time. He has requested me to say that he is upset at this and knows very well that when Mickey Mouse’s hand is on the 12 and his tale is on the 10 then it is time to blow the hooter. He therefore requests that we all ‘Shut the fcuk up’!!

I put 3 balls of crumb into my 10m line and then picked up the margin top kit to try and pick up some bits while the crumb settled. I flicked a few caster into each margin and alternatively tried each baited up with a single caster. A nice roach accepted my first put in and then a few smaller. Next put in pull the elastic out well and surprised me with the reward of a 2lb perch. A few more bits followed and then from the right margin the elastic went again and took off for the middle. Vermin I thought but then it easily surfaced and a lovely 3lb Tinca graced the net. A good start for the first 15 mins. I then tried the 10m line with a soft 6mm pellet. There was a slight tow in the water and the float travelled about a meter in 5mins so I tried differing methods of holding the float back or letting it run through over my baited area. My first fish from this area was a small skimmer and with a very tentative bite. The next was a more confident dip of the float and a good size bream. I kept at this line for about an hour and was rewarded by some more small skimmers although the bites took a long time to develop. The next 4 hours followed a similar pattern of fishing the 10m line then give some feed and then try the margins. Apart from a further good size bream and more skimmers ‘blades’ there is was no more excitement to mention and I ended with 10lb 12oz for my efforts.

The fog only thinned a little during the whole match and it created a very sombre atmosphere with little banter to accompany the lack of fish being caught. Rob Eagles decided he had to go for carp on peg 10 and had two very quickly. Colin had one fairly early but then all was quite with lead rods remaining still for long periods of time. Dave next to me was catching silvers at the same rate as me but Tony Fry on 6 was having a bit more fun fishing the waggler. At one point there was laughter as Georgie boy hooked into a large carp who was very rude by taking his rig, elastic, Dacron connector and  part of his elastic bung. Poor fellow was left standing with a top kit in his hand looking like a garden gnome. But he didn’t complain, he just went on to lose another 2 carp!! The odd carp were putting in appearances but there was certainly no clear indication of a winner.

On the all out (Mickey’s tail on the 4), everyone considered it had been a very quiet day in many respects. The scales were soon coming down from peg 1 and the weights of note at that point were Dave Allens 17lb 12oz of silvers which included 7 good bream and then Steve King posting the best overall of 36lb 12oz. I didn’t follow the scales because I was still packing up and then went back to the cars and waited for Chair Bob to return with the score sheet. It turned out that Martin Western had taken 1st overall for the second week with 38lb 6oz and Dave Tunstall had 2nd silvers with 16lb 12oz.

So, the scores on the doors were:
Overall
1st Martin Western (18) – 38lb 6oz
2nd Steve King (5) – 36lb 12oz
3rd Roger Coombs (16) – 31lb 13oz
Silvers
1st Dave Allen (3) – 17lb 12oz
2nd Dave Tunstall (13) – 16lb 12oz
3rd Tony Fry (6) – 11lb 6oz
