HLS Dad's Army Trinity Woodlands Wednesday 21st February

Dad's Army were booked to assault Trinity Woodland today, a venue that suits, with good sized platforms and sound banks, plus a good depth of water.   The weather forecast was not inspiring, and I looked forward to cloud and east wind with trepidation.

Misha was in charge, so the lads crowded into the shed to chat to this very good looking young lady, while Danny and I sorted out the pegging.  The money was done, and it was all about the craic, with optimistic talk about what some ANGLERS? might catch.

There were thirteen fishing today, and they could not wait to put their grubby paws into the draw bag.   Peg seven was the Golden Peg, and Bend It got lucky;  he had a good chance, as the silvers have been showing in this area.   I drew twenty four, with Mustard and Ninja on either side of me, and Teach Kev and Nasty Old Sheriff across the lake.

At ten o'clock I shouted all in, and from the start I was treated to an exhibition on how to catch fish by the Sheriff, who just couldn't wait to plunder my moneybox.    Looking around I could see most were catching silvers, but the carp boys were finding it difficult, this lead to Ninja using his extensive vocabulary!! and expletives "AYE MAN"

My day was a great improvement on recent efforts, I had decided to use 4mm soft pellet over ground bait laced with pellet and corn.   I had plenty of bites, missed a lot, but maybe I will get better with confidence and practise.

The weather was a real  bonus today considering the forecast.   Kev was fishing in his shirt sleeves, it was so warm.   The weights were not bad either, the in form Danny topping silvers with 17lbs 12ozs, myself second with 11 lbs 4ozs.  The Wizard won overall with 25lbs 4ozs, which John Brads said all came from his swim!     Boy George, with equal weight Silver and Carp was second.

            Next Wednesday it's Sedges Brick.

                                         Don't believe the weather forecast

HLS Dads Army 14th February Emeralds Jade

It was Wednesday, we were fishing Emeralds on Jade Lake and the lads were looking keen??  They were all sharpening their kit, but there was a downside, it was raining, cold, and windy.   This did not deter these MEN of Dad's Army!!  they were still having the craic, and talking about the imaginary weight they will be catching.

Danny and George pegged it, while I did the money side.   It was draw time, Peg eight was the Golden Peg which was drawn by John.   Bend It got the flyer, and was facing the wind.   I drew seven, which was between Tungsten and John, with Boy George in the corner on five, sounding very confident.

I shouted all in, and the assault started.   Bend It was into fish straight away, and caught steadily all day.   Tungsten lost five carp in the first hour, saying they must have been foul hooked.   John and I were still waiting for our first bite at one o'clock, by which time Sheriff on peg nine had one carp and a skimmer, but then things started to warm up for him.   John caught a fish, which made me the only one blanking AGAIN.  Then a miracle!! My float moved
and, I had something very rare for me, a fish in my net.   At the end I had two bites for two fish,  a 100% strike rate after ten hours fishing at two of the most prolific lakes we fish.

Bend It made the most of his draw, with 27lbs 1oz of silvers, Boy George second with 17lbs.   The overall was very close with Ninja just edging out Garters, 47lbs 13ozs against 44lbs 6ozs.

The weather was not that bad, and a lot of fish were caught considering the conditions lately.   This venue is a four in one for our Wednesday group, each lake having enough pegs.  Our thanks to Alan, we look forward to returning soon, with hopefully better temperatures and even better weights.

Next Wednesday it's Trinity Woodlands, it's well worth the effort

Ding Dong keep the phone ringing!

Sunday 11th February 2018 - Sedges Brick

Rain...hail...sun...cold wind and more rain ...oh it must be the HLS gangs weekly trip to Bridgwater ...well the day started bad as i met lord c at street macd's only to find out that the road to Bridgwater was closed at Walton so we did a detour all over the place and when we got to the Sedges Mike told us that the road was open at weekends !!! oh joy

Anyway i paid my pools and  was told that we had 19  fishing today as Kev could not make it so the decision was made to leave out peg 20 and looking at the waves in that peg it was the right decision ...

I asked "the best silvers angler in the club" if he wanted a pound side bet and he said no !!! also he said he would win the silvers today and with a ego that big we should all watch out !!

At the draw we all wanted peg 10 or 11 for the carp or peg 8 for the silvers, so into the bucket of dreams and peg 2 was looking at me and i was a bit gutted to be honest but with the wind over my back all day i might get a chance to pick up a few ??

The golden pegs today were peg 1 and 10 , D.T got peg 1 and "lord c's" better looking and  younger brother Shane got his mitts on peg 10 !!!

looks nice but not for long !!!

I set up a maggot feeder and a pole rig to fish ground bait and the same rig to fish micros and expanders

At the all in  i put a nugget of micros on the 2 o'clock line  and a ball of ground bait on the 10 o'clock line and then out on the maggot feeder with a single maggot on the hook thinking i might get a quick bite ...how wrong was i !! A hour in and still blanking ... looking around the only people catching was peg 19 (casting into peg 20) and peg 10 (lord c's much younger brother) ..Danny on peg 4 had 2 better skimmers and Rob was getting  a few silvers on peg 11 on the cage feeder.. so out onto the pole line  hoping i would get a bite or 2 ...3.5  hours of trying and still no bites i packed up, loaded my kit into the car and went for a walk and sat with Shane on peg 10 who had 3 bites while  i was there ..git!

Then i went and sat behind "lord c" on peg 15 just to learn from the master for the last few hours..
Paul (paxo baits)  also packed up and came for a chat ..while we sat there i seen Brian catching a few better silvers on tip and Shane on peg 10 get a few more carp ..

At the all out most had packed early so the scales didn't take long so we started on peg 1 with D.T he had 1 bite which was a good skimmer for 2-12 then Brian put on 8-12 of silvers to take the lead Danny had 4-9 and then "best silvers angler in the club" sat on the "best silvers peg" had 5-4  then it was onto Shane on peg 10 who put on 81-2 of carp which was a great weight on a very hard day ...Rob on peg 11 had 7-10 of silvers and wind burn !! And the only other person on the far side to weigh in was big Tony on peg 19 who also had a great catch and he had 33-12..

1st overall Shane peg 10   81-2 and also winning the golden peg (git!!)
2nd overall Tony peg 19   33-12

1st silvers Brian  peg 4 8-12
2nd silvers "that man Rob"  peg 11 7-10
3rd "the best silvers angler in the club" peg 8  5-4  oh yes we only pay top 2 ...

"best silvers angler in the club"
George wiping the tears from his face when he was told he was 3rd in the silvers !!! again!!!

So a hard day again ....next week the club is at Avalon so please book in with the guru tart !!! And lastly as a club we have a few guys fishing the open match on the river Brue and it looks like it could be a good turn out this year ...last year HLS club members Paul(paxo baits) and Mike were 1st and 2nd so good luck to all that fish ..i am not fishing this weekend as my wife has booked us a weekend away so the guru tart will be doing the Avalon blog ..

Bring on the summer !!!

HLS Dad's Army Wednesday 7th February Viaducts Match Lake

It had been a cold night, and Dad's Army were booked for Match Lake at Viaducts.   When I arrived Tivi had just pulled in, so we had a chat with young Badger, who was looking after us today.   There was plenty of ice around, so we had a walk around the venue to see where best to get some fish from. We eventually decided on Campbell as the most accessible, having decided that, it was then ,what pegs to use?

Money collected, and it was time for the draw.  The Golden Peg number 115 went to sticky fingered Sheriff.    The hardy lad's didn't complain, and off they went to set up for any fish that dared to turn up.

I got to my peg 128 a little late, so it was a quick set up, and then I shouted all in.   It was not long before the Big Bird was hauling out a carp, and The Sheriff was catching silvers.   All the rest of us were struggling, but saying that, everyone weighed in except you know who, with not a bite all day.

Rob with an amazing 72lbs 14ozs romped away with the overall, while Danny got silvers and the Golden Peg, with 11lbs 2ozs.   So everyone who studies form will have no problem naming these two hot favourits.   Well done everyone for overcoming all the adverse conditions.

It was good to see The Wizard back fighting fit, also Simon Garbutt getting a  day off work.   The sun shone all day making it feel quite warm, but we know there is better to come, so get off your butts, and get fishing.

Next Wednesday it's Emeralds Specimen Lake and limited number?   It is also Valentines Day so just behave, no nonsense  xxxx!

Sunday 4th February 2018 - Shiplate Main lake

SHIPLATE FARM 04/02/2018

It was are first visit to Shiplate this year and I was looking forward to it as we would be doing battle on the main lake ..I arrived about 8 o'clock  to find Steve the owner doing the car park duty  he said  it was going to be a full house today with all lake being used and to be honest it is such a lovely fishery with great owners I can see why it's busy ..keep up the good work!!

When I got out of my car the first thing I noticed was how cold it was and the wind was going to be a pain for the guys on the top end of lake..I paid my money to Shane and then had a chat to the guru tart and his side kick Shaun, only for the guru tart to tell me that he going to by a new seat box just for summer fishing !!! Me thinks this boy has too much money !!. Also George, "The best silvers angler in the club" asked me not to take the piss on tonight blog ...mmm ok

We had only 15 booked in today so plenty of room and with "Lord C" away we all might have a chance!!!! but saying that we did have George who is  "The best silvers angler in the club" so we would all be going for 2nd in the silvers ...  I was thinking at the draw that  Rob is on fire at the moment winning all over the place and  Mike and Danny are hard to beat so a pick up on the silvers front could be hard ..

So a carp peg please ... peg 1 or 15 would be great.... I was helping Shane as the draw got under way and I asked Mike to hand me a card ...then I heard the voice of the guru tart saying very loud "I GOT 15"...and  ran off  like he was the Usain bolt   ..and then Kev said he had peg 1 so i had a look only to find that i had peg 2 !! a great summer peg but not sure what it would be like at this time of the year ..so a quick chat to Mr Howell  to find out what the peg was fishing like and his reply was crap!!.

Mr Howell told me to go for the silvers, but looking around I was out of it as Rob was on peg 3, Paul (Paxo baits)  on 4 and D.T on 5 over on the far side was George "The best silvers angler in the club ! on peg 13 and Danny on 13a ..

Back to my peg and i set up a dobbing rig, a margin rig and rig to fish in the track ...

peg 2

looks a real cracker!

looking right.

On the plus side I had very little wind so that was a good thing as I wanted to fish to the island dobbing bread punch..At the all in i went out with a 8mm bread punch on the hook and had a small carp  within 5 minutes and I was thinking that I might get another there but that was all i had on that dobbing rig ..

Looking around the only person who i could see catching was Rob on peg 3 so thinking it  was going to rock hard so I  set up another silvers rig to fish 1 meter off the island with ground bait and maggot and I was getting very small roach.. but it was so slow, 3 hours in and I had 1 more carp on the maggot line which was bonus ..and a few more roach but that was my lot ..

I packed up super fast to help with the scales but it looked like there were a few DNW's on the far side but  Danny was winning  with 9-12 on to our side and Mike on peg 7 had 6.6 which included a nice tench, Stan on peg 6 went home early as he is a busy boy building Hinckley point C ...D.T on peg 5 had 4-8 , Paul (Paxo baits) had 4-4 then Rob on peg 3 had 8-2 ...My turn and I had 8-14 which included the  only 2 carp caught. That's how hard it fished  ...

So I was in the frame which was a bonus

Danny and Rob both fished a great match and even better for Danny he won the golden peg (i said they were both good) but as i was driving home i was thinking that we might have paid the pools slightly wrong  today because Danny won overall with 9-12 of silvers and I had 8-14 of carp and silvers ..Rod had 8-2 of silvers and Mike had 6-6 also of silvers

We paid out:

1st silvers Danny 9-12 (winning the golden peg)
2nd silvers Rob 8-2
4th silvers George(best silvers angler in the club) 4-6 "oh yea we only pay the top 2 ..."
1st overall Steve King 8-14
2nd overall Mike 6-6

Not sure but I think we should have paid out :

1st overall Danny 9-12 (still winning the golden peg)
2nd overall Steve king 8-14
1st silvers Rob 8-2
2nd silvers Mike 6-6
4th silvers George(best silvers angler in the club) 4-6 "oh yea we only pay the top 2 ..."

If this is right i will pay Rob back the difference in pools money next week ...

Next week we are at the Sedges so please book in with the guru tart ..also thanks to Tony Fry and Danny for helping with the scales ..get your ice breakers ready boys !!!

HLS Angling Dad's Army January 31st - Trinity Woodlands

On a day, although cold with hailstones like small ball bearings coming down,  was no trouble at all for our small troop of intrepid men.    Misha served up hot drinks and looked after us today.   It was not long before the business was completed.

The draw was next, and because of the conditions, we were all at the west end of the lake.   The Golden Peg was two, drawn by Richard, would he cut the Mustard??  He had acquired a new weapon namely a POLE!! but could he use it? did he load it with the right elastic?

Off we went to our pegs, to prepare for what we hoped would be action.   I had peg eight, between Big Bird and Bend It.   Across the lake was Tivi, Bolton George, and The Sheriff.

Weapons loaded, it was all in.   From the start there were small fish being caught, and as the day wore on it was obvious it would be close, with no carp being caught

A source of entertainment today, was a young swan attempting to take off;  after eight tries, each time reaching the giddy heights of ten feet, only to belly flop in front of us.  It was getting loud cheers of encouragement each time from the lads.

It was then time for all out, and at the weigh George just beat the Sheriff by 2ozs with 10lbs 2ozs, but Bend It topped the day with 12lbs 2ozs

Next Wednesday we attack Viaducts Match Lake.

01278683243 is the number, make it ring
