HLS Angling Club - Landsend Fishery - Sunday 31st March 2019

This weeks trip was to the picturesque venue of Landsend Fishery in Wedmore. The week leading up to today was warm and sunny and the optimism was high with the warming temperatures and potential warming of the water.

I went for a wander around the lake and with very little breeze, but a bit cooler it still looked really good with the odd fish topping here and there.

This week turned out to be an eventual occasions for many as you will see throughout the report

18 people were signed up for today including a rare outing for Chairman Kev.

There's been some money spent of late with a few people showing off their new poles, however the cleanliness of their holdalls, were seriously let down by the terrifying conditions of their seat boxes which had Dettal in melt down mode.

The Guru tart turned up with a nice CO-OP pastry in hand, but in 1 bite the pastry split and the contents fell on the floor, there is a photo of the contents later at the end of the blog - you can make your own mind up on what you think was in there. The pastry was tossed away and fell only inches from Dettals van - he went from white as a sheet in seeing the un-cleansed seat boxes to near green with the thought of his van been being tarnished with dog poo - I mean pastry filling.

Mario Tony bought a bundle of old pole sections so people could help themselves if needed, an unwarranted cry from the normal rowdy members of "Danny can make a brand new pole from those" bought a chuckle or 10.

So the golden peg was drawn and out popped peg nos 24 - this was a corner peg and favoured for its habitant of carp, so who ever was to draw this would potentially be in with a very good shout.

The draw was made and was as follows

Peg

1 - Nice Guy Rich
2 - Chairman Kev
3 - Danny
5 - John Wall
6 - Steve warren
8  - Dave Allen
9 - Last Hour Dave
11 - Tony Fry
13 - Guru Tart
14 - Mutant George
15 - Lord C
16 - Eric
17 - Me
18 - Mike Davis
19 - Mario Tony
21 - Queenie
22 - Sharp Shopper Shane
24 - Dettal

For today I had Eric and Mike Davis either side of me, with Mike generally fishing for silvers and Eric all out attack for those carp. I was going to fish at 16m across to the island but the wind just started to get up and I decided to fish at 11.5m and a small margin rig which paid off when those gusts blew later in the day.

So the all in whistle was blown and as per previous weeks someone had caught the very first cast - this week was Tony Fry, with the Guru tart fishing directly opposite him he wasn't too complimentary about Tony's good start. I don't know whether he managed to land it or not.

The Guru tart then hooked a carp which took his rig and all we heard was him  crying in his hands about losing his float, I believe later he also snapped a pole section but that was not confirmed.

I could Steve Warren and John on the opposite side of the lake catching a few carp whilst myself and Mike were still waiting for our first bites. Eric, fishing the margins then started to land a few. After 2 hours I had my first fish and a skimmer to about a pound followed by another. Mike was still blanking but then switched to the margins and started catching. It was really hard work getting silvers to bite but those pesky carp were munching. I was fortunate or not ,which ever way you look at it, that Eric was giving me a full blown concert with his take on some very old tunes. It was fun listening to him making up random words and sentences which is by far better than listing to the rather vocal Queenie, that I could hear from a 1/4 of a mile away. The songs then turned into expletives when into a large looking carp and Eric dancing around his platform, his top kit snapped - ( I don't think Mario Tony supplied this from his array of spare sections )- and then consequently hook pulled the fish.

At around 1 o'clock plenty of people were catching carp but silvers was still hard going then Mike now fishing in the margins took a nice bream of 3-4lb but then started catching carp  again throughout the day. Then there was the biggest splash of the day and all anglers looked up to see that Chairman Kev had taken a tumble into the drink, not only himself but most of his equipment as well. To their credit Nice Guy Rich, Danny, Steve and John went to his rescue so well done to those men and I hope that Kev is ok and drying out. How he did it I'm not sure but rumour as it that a pole section had gone in and he leant over to retrieve it and over did it.

Around me I could elastic coming out from every where from most anglers and then I landed a 6lb carp before landing a 4lb bream. Its strange that just when you think you get them going it dies again leaving you scratching your head. Mike was still doing well next to me but a thought for Mario Tony as with his new pole he hooked 6 carp and only landed 1 with his rigs giving way -  a cry from Queenie of  - "you should have spent the money on new rigs rather than that pole" echoed around the lake, most people would have probably given up and went home however he continued and landed about 6 carp after lunch. Don't you just love the sympathy.

It was reported after the match that Golden peg 24 had produced but unfortunately all 10 had either hook pulled or rigs smashed so unfortunately for Shaun didn't get his mitts on the money.

So the all out cry and the end of the match.
