06.09-2020 Viaduct - Campbell

Todays match was at the popular viaduct venue where we have recently had a couple of matches cancelled as the fishery has changed Cary Pond to pleasure and carp anglers.

Many anglers got there early but still found the car park filling quickly as the pleasure anglers had congregated early in order to get to the better pegs, however there were still plenty of places to park.

A short wait for the shop to open then with face mask on and only 1 person allowed in the shop at any one time It was time to get the bait; however some had to wait as Queenie decided that he was going to have a flirtatious 5 minutes until he was told to book a date night at which he swiftly left.

Getting to the pegs was now a bit of an obstacle course as the carpers cant sit next to their rods, they have to take up as much room as they can, put up a bivvy that a family of illegal immigrants could camp in for a fortnight and set up so much stuff its unreal. The stupid thing is that they them set their rods with bloody noisy bite alarms set so loud that they could hear them in Langport (I CAN ONLY IMAGINE THAT THEY ARE ALL DEAF) then wait for the alarm to go off - just a thought, maybe they have them so loud so they can show off to the other fisherman - look at me I have a fish, where as us match anglers are so much more finesse , well some of us.

The sight of anglers walking around the lake with beer cans in their hands and the smell of weed being smoked seems to be an ever regular occurrence with these type of anglers but I guess i shouldn't stereotype them all.

The draw was done on Friday on zoom with Phil, Nige and Steve in attendance.

Interesting draw again with Danny, Bob, Dave and George all in a row competing for those silvers, who was going to show their class? The day started off nice and bright not too much wind and the aerators chugging along giving a nice ripple. Then we had some heavy showers and the aerators turned off which seemed to change the fishing for some. I was next to Phil Beards today and before you make up your own mind before reading on, it was an experience, funny to watch but pleasurable. Someone had turned his volume to low and although he lost a few rigs and fish he kept calm. Once he beefed up his tackle he actually landed a few fish and he had some nice tench and perch down the side.

I had Tony Newell opposite me, and i know that if i'm opposite him i'l be watching him on the tip bringing these fish in on a regular basis, and today was no different. It was a pleasure to see Roger just sitting back taking his time and catching well, with many fish larger than him and I did wonder sometimes who's caught who.

My swim is a bit awkward as you are out in the pond with your margins behind you so feels strange. It would be nice to take that platform out and move it back to the bank. I started well with 3 carp in 30 mins for about 30lb, then the inevitable happened. My float tip snapped and I had to change my rig, and it never seems to be quite right there after and it took ages in getting another bite. What I was surprised at was that I could not get a bite on the short lines and the margin only gave me 1 carp.

Apart from the rain it was a much more pleasurable experience than last week, was it that I caught fish or was it the wift of pot making me calm and relaxed.
