Most fishermen will say that a day on the bank is better than any other. Well, this was a day to test that!!
20 of the HLS crowd assembled at in the Landsend car park and were joined by a guest in the shape of Lee Williams, a well known Bridgy boy. Horny Beards had returned from his two weeks in Morocco; I'm surprised they let him stay that long!!!
Chairman Bob informed us that he had selected all of the match lake and the north side of the specimen lake. I was quick to draw and out came peg 37 on Speci lake. I had never been on that lake before and so was none the wiser for what I had drawn. Peg 37......
I had come prepared for silver only and so I decided on 4 lines to fish; 2+1 in front, 11m in front and left and right margins on a top kit. To my left I had Shaun Larkham on peg 38 and to my right, Tony Fry on 36. The sun was going to be in our faces all day although down at pegs 35 and 34 they had a lot more shade cast over the water. On the all in I fed all lines with a ball of bread crumb containing a few hook baits. I started in the margins on single maggot just to see if there was any signs of life. 10 minutes and a single small Rudd made me have a look and the lines infront of me. To cut a long story short, I alternated these lines for the 6 hours struggling to get bites. I found I would get ten minutes when I would get a bite a put in and then nothing for 30 mins, very frustrating. Tony said it took him and hour to get a bite and Shaun had his first bite on the hour, netting a 6lb carp. Bob and Rob Eagles were on pegs 35 and 34 and seem to be getting a steady stream of silvers. With an hour to go Shaun had his 2nd bite of the day and it was a huge lump that just steamed off and said bye bye to Shaun. So, there seemed little luck with silvers or carp. Word came that the situation was similar on the match lake.
On the all out there was a handful who had packed up and declared a DNW. I packed up and then Tony and I did the weigh; me recording the weights. We weighed in the speci pegs first and Paul Berry had the silvers target to beat with 12lb 1oz. My meager net of fish only troubled the scales too 7lb 13oz. Tony only just beat me with 8lb 2oz. Then we had the shining stars for the silvers. Bob posted 19lb and Rob had 16lb 1oz, although Rob also had 25lb 12oz of carp to give him a total of 41lb 13oz (4th overall for the day).
The match lake weights were also a tale of woe and Lee Williams posted the first reasonable weight of 44lb 6oz. Nothing bettered that until we got to Phil Beards on the corner peg, 13. Phil had fished the end bank on the pole with 6mm meat and had a steady catch of carp and a few silvers (I wondered if he had been using some Morocccan cannabis resin instead of meat, lol) . He notched up the winning weight of 56lb 10oz. However, he was closely chased by John Barker on peg 19 with a similar catch who posted 55lb 4oz.
Mr B with some of his catch....Well done Phil!
So, the winning weights were...
Overall
1st - Phil Beards 56lb 10oz
2nd - John Barker 55lb 4oz
3rd - Lee Williams 44lb 6oz
Silvers
1st - Bob Pascoe 19lb
2nd - Rob Eagles 16lb 1oz
3rd - Paul Berry 12lb 1oz
And the score sheet.....

Wednsday 23rd September 2015 - Summerhays Sellick Lake
Look out fish, 14 of
Dad's Army are ready and quick on the draw, followed by the usual moan from
G.F. .The fish saw us coming, and certainly kept their heads down, silvers
being a rarity, with the exception of Danny. The Sheriff mangaged to ease
out 9lbs 6ozs to win silvers.
The overall winner
was the Burnham Bomber Pete Cooke (with an E), his total weight being 35lbs
4ozs, well done to both of you, but you don't get a promotion.
Welcome to new member
Graham Burbridge, who I am sure wil enjoy his fishing like the rest of us.
Look forward
to next Wenesday at Shiplate on Hawthorns, names please

Sunday 20th September 2015 – Viaduct Cary Lake
As the Rugby World Cup begins, 17 of our best Hookers lined
up at the Viaduct Arena and listened to the team talk from Captain Bob. “Keep
your hook lengths long and no rucking in the margins”. Well, there was some
rucking moans at the draw when less than desirable pegs were drawn. I drew the
‘two fat ladies’ (88) and was not excited due to its poor performance over
recent months. To my left I had Captain Bob Pascoe on 90, the Welsh wizard,
Brian Chivers on 86 and yet again, in front of me was that man Fletcher!!!
Peg 88……
A crowd around Shaun on peg 81.
What words of wisdom were they giving you Shaun?
At my peg, Paul Berry gave me a tip about the left margin
but apart from small silvers, nothing else showed up. My main approach was to
target the carp on the lead at 20 metres in front with a second line on the
pole at 2:00 o’clock at 11m. Bait was a mixture of normal pellet, robin red
pellet and amino paste.
Captain Bob decided that everybody was ready 5 mins early and
blew the all in horn. I fed the margin pole line and chucked out the lead and
waited. Apart from liners, I was still waiting for a take on the lead, an hour
later. I noticed there was plenty of bubbles over my 11m line and so
investigated with a banded 6mm pellet but all I got was attention from small
skimmers. I changed to paste and had a good take but the Cary ‘munter’ just
took off until my hook separated! Back to my lead rod and I had my first take
and fish in the net, a 12lb mirror. Then nothing but small skimmers on the pole
lines. With an hour to go I had a flurry of takes, 4 takes in 4 put ins. 2 were
landed, one shed the hook at the net and one which did an impression of a
submarine which I couldn’t get to the surface no matter how hard I pulled. The
hook length gave way and so that was my day. 3 fish for 30lb exact.
While sat there watching a still tip for most of the match
gave me a chance to take in what the rest of the HLS mob were doing. There was
plenty of splashing from Brian on my right but he kept say that he only had
one!! Bob, George and Dave Harvey were a blur of activity as they netted their
usual quantities of 'whitebait'. However word got around that Danny and his magic
maggots was doing better on peg 80. The most carp action was occurring in
adjacent pegs, 97 and 98 where Matt and Simon had steady action throughout the
day. Matt ran out the winner with 9 fish for a winning 100lb 14oz. It was his
first ton in a match and first win with HLS, well done!!
The scores on the doors were….
Overall
1st Matt Culpin (97) – 100lb 14oz
2nd Eric Searle (78) – 90lb 8oz
3rd Simon Gardner (98) – 73lb 1oz
Silvers
1st Andy Danahay (80) – 19lb 11oz
2nd John Barker (99) – 17lb
3rd Bob Pascoe (90) – 16lb 2oz

Wednesday 16th September 2015 - Landsend Match Lake
Ten of Dads Army
turned up smartly dressed, it was good to see Simon Garbutt (Private
Pike), one of our younger recruits!!
I drew peg 1, a renowned
carp residence, and so it proved. After six hours of toil,
three hours trying for silvers, the last 1/2 hour in the pouring rain. I
weighed in 78lbs 10ozs of which 11lbs were silvers, enough to win overall but only by 6ozs over young Pike, hard luck to him. A really good
match. Bolton George wins the silvers with the same weight as myself
11ozs, lucky George.
The weigh in was a
miserable affair, the rain pouring down, paperwork getting soaked etc.
Many thanks to Simon for his help, but I must say the spirit of the lads
was not dampened; so here's to the next one at Summerhays Sellick
Until then

Sunday 13th September 2015 - Avalon Lake pegs 1 - 23
12 of the HLS disciples turned up to one of the Somerset
favorite venues whilst others were still away, sunning themselves, or having
emergency tooth surgery (Shaun Larkham). The fishery owner Leigh sorted out 12
pegs for us, including the dreaded peg 1. I was third into the bag and pulled
out the well known carp peg, No.5, which threw me because I had come with
silvers in mind. As I was walking off to my peg there was a howl of anguish
behind me which turned out to be Bolton Wanderer George who had drawn peg 1.
My peg for the day….
So, I had peg 5 and I thought that I must fish the water in
front of me. There was lots of carp moving around in the gap between the island
so I thought I’d keep things simple and set up a pellet waggler and a lead rod
to fish the gap. I did also set up a margin rig to fish down the edge to my
right. I started out on the waggler and had my first common at 20 mins and then
another 10 mins later. However, it did become clear that I was only getting any
interest if I was putting the bait close to the reeds. On the hour I switched
to the lead to see if they would like a double 10 mm pellet on the hair. I
struggled for the whole of 6hrs alternating these approached and only ended up
with 5 carp in the net although I lost some foul hookers.
With only 12 fishing it was hard to see what everyone else
was doing. New member, John Barker, next to me on peg 6 was doing well with the
silvers and would have done better if he hadn’t been pestered by the carp. Down
on peg 1 there was a dripping of discontent from George, but he was catching a
few silvers.
A pre-match lecture from Roger Coombs to Tony on the art of
casting……..
At the weigh in I helped Leigh by putting the scores on the
sheet and finding out what people had done for 6 hours. We’ll bypass my
pathetic weight and move swiftly on. John Barker did post a reasonable silvers
weight of 23lb 2oz plus 11lb 2 oz of carp. Tony Fry then put up the best
overall weight, so far, from peg 10 of 42lb 10oz. On peg 17, Paul Bowyer then
posted what was the top silvers weight of 27lb 9oz. He caught on a variety of
baits but betaine paste appeared to seek out the better bream. Chairman Bob
posted the second best silvers weight from peg 22 with 23lb 9oz. All that was
left was Ninja Searle on peg 23 and through a lot of wheezing he managed
to tip out the top weight of 48lb 8oz.
So the payout results were:-
Overall
1st
Eric Searle 48lb
8oz
2nd
Tony
Fry
42lb 10oz
3rd
Mike Davis 39lb
Silvers
1st
Paul Bowyer 27lb 9oz
2nd
Bob Pascoe 23lb 9oz
These weights were not really the best that Avalon has to
offer and was considered a hard days fishing. A post match offer was made by
owner Leigh to show how to catch silvers, particularly on peg 1.
Score sheet…..
