Christmas Match - Trinity Water 22.12.19

The long awaitied Christmas Match was held at Trinity Water on Ash and Woodlands and it was good to see a very good turn out of 28 Anglers.

After collecting Dick from his home and filling any available space in my van with his gear, we aimed to get there early only to find the gates closed and lots of other vehicles with the same intention of probably trying to get to some of the dryer spots in the car park. There had been heavy rain over the previous days and the car park was very muddy and areas of grass were flooded which had Detall in a right tizz.

After off loading of the gear and a nice cuppa along with several quality street supplied by yours truely it was time for the draw. There was no golden peg today just a super pools.

Due to fishing on 2 different lakes the draw was split into 3 sections with payouts to top 2 (1 silvers, 1 - Overall) in each section which In my opinion was a really fair way to do it.

Lord C and Queenie with the assitnace of Tom pegged out the swims and Queenie then got the draw under way, whilst I tried to remember everyones name to put on the sheets.

Some favoured pegs today was Ash - Peg 1, Peg 1, 6 and 12 on woodlands.

So I was last to draw and to be honest I had a little practice on Friday on Ash as I was sure that I was going to draw here and my previous 2 encounters on this lake caught me a few small fish so. To be fair on Friday I had a great days silvers fishing and was feeling possitive about the day ahead. By the time I drew there were 2 pegs left- 27 on Woodlands and peg 9 on Ash, and I got Woodlands. Therfore, Sausgae was lett with 9 as he was running a bit late. Fortunatley having picked up some pinkines the day before, I was informed that the Woodlands water levels had risen to approximate 9 feet in places so I made up 1 rig the day before and hoped that the report of the depth was an exageration and thought Id use my already made up 8 feet rigs.

With the draw being at 8.30 and fishing from 10.00am - 3.00pm it gave me plenty of time to set up and fortunaetly I was just across the footbridge rather than a long walk. Personally I think the side of the lake that I drew was more homely for silvers and the far bank was more carp dominated, so I thought Id fish for the silvers today. I put my 8 foot rig on at 13m only to see the float and tail disaperar, so on with the 9 foot rig and fingers crossed, luckily it sat perfect and this was going to be my groundbait line. I then used my 8 foot rig at 8 meters which I thought Id try a few micros and  Id set up another for the margin with just maggot hoping to pick up a couple of perch or odd small fish.

With 10 minutes to spare and a bit of drizzle I thought Id have a cuppa only to fnd that I left my milk at home and black tea is disgusting. I then thought Im going to get comfortable and put my hoodie on only to find that I left this at home aswell so not a great start. The rain came down and I put the brolley up as showers were forcast. The shower didnt last long and the wind was compfortable giving a slight ripple across the water but we did have a few showers throughout the day but nothing too prolomged.

At 10.00am the whistel went and I put 10 micros on 8m and a thumbnail of groundbailt witha couple of pinkines on and fished directly over the top. Straight away the float disaperaed and I had a small blade. Next put in the same and tis continued for the first hour soI had about 1.5 pounds. I thought i'd put a few more micros in at 8m and some dead redsin margin whilst still fishing the 13m line but this time a few caster with ground bait and started to get a few bigger fish. This was all about reading the bites today as they were very shy and I was dotted right down. If I struck as it disaperaed then Id miss the bite so gave it a second or 2 before striking and then I didnt miss many.  I couldnt really see what was going on around me but Mario, who was behind me on Ash hooked into a carp on the off as did Rich Coles. Across the lake on 7 Stan was playing a large carp for quites a consideralble time which he eventually landed. Simon on on 9 was scatching but also losing a few and that was really all I see.

I continued to catch all day but mainly small stuff and just before the all out I landed a blade of about 6 oz  and thought Id have about 6 lb at the end of the match. I couldnt get a bite on the micro line or the margin and had to concentrate on the 13m line, although the last 30 minutes went very quiet.

The all out was called and the talk was Dick did well with a reported 12lb and Goerge and Danny also in the frame with around 8lb. I thought I did ok but I wasnt going to match these and I said to Dick if he beat me again then he could push his trolly home.

Steve and Martin did the weighing and the last 2 to get weighed were myself and Tony Fry. After watching George off load his net for 7lb - 10oz it was my turn and Steve looked in and said youve got this which I was surprised at and weighed 10lb - 05 oz to win my section on silvers and was glad to see I had top silvers in the match as well.

A good effort by all. Downside - me and Stan were too tight to pay for the pools and missed out on cash but for me its the winning that matters not the cash and it was nice to allows others to pick up some pools money. Mine and Stans generosity allowed George and Paul Lock to pick up a few quid so well done gents.

This was a really enjoyable match for me as catching fish is why we all going fishing, theres great menebers wo contribute towards a greta club.

It would appear that Steve Warren had all the fish in his peg today with a lovely sheltered corner spot, whilst the others would have to really work hard to catch any remaining fish.


Looks like George is going without food again this week as Danny outclassed the Bolton wanderer and yet another £1 into his pension fund and Steve King with10lb of accidentals being in the silvers frame. It would appear that Martin on peg 29 which is a good silvers peg forgot to put any bait on his hook with a DNW.


Well done to those who braved it out. Next up is Avalon on what again is predicted to be a bit of A windy day, but the forecast may change.

Summerhayes - 01.12.2019

Todays trip was to Summmerhayes fishery where 14 anglers braved the cold conditions. Following from a sharp overnight frost this was followed by a cold north-easterly breeze which was blowing right down the lake.


I arrived to see just sharp shopper Shane the only person there who was quickly putting on many layers of clothing. Pete arrived and opened the building where we could get out of the elements and get a nice warm cuppa by which time a few more keen anglers had arrived.


After a chat about the Xmas Fayre and prizes, the normal football banter with George and his beloved Bolton, how much a better angler Danny was compared to George and Lord C on pegging duties it was all in for the grand draw. Peg 17 was drawn as the golden peg.

So lots of space today between anglers and with the silvers normally well in the pegs 31-34 I thought a few could be caught. These can also be good for carp and looking at the draws the carp anglers were mainly on Silver Pegs and vice versa.


I looked at dobbing bread but at 16m with the wind proposed to increase I thought that Id keep things short and go for silvers by fishing micro over a thimble of ground bait with lines at 7 and 9 meters and set up some light 0.2 gramme floats. The all in was called and I went straight over the 7m line. My neighbour for the day Lord C went out 14.5m with bread and hooked a carp straight away, the lost it shipping in. I was still waiting over my short line for something to happen when Lord C hooked anther carp and lost that one before finally netting a small carp and a roach. My float still just sat there, I moved onto my right hand side 7m line and that sat there as did the right and left 9m lines. I rotated and changed baits but absolutely nothing. Danny who was up to my right some 4 swims away, managed to catch a very small roach, then I saw him after a couple of hours remove his nets and start fishing around with his landing net before returning to fish his pole line  and this continued on and off for another hour or so, I could only imagine that he dropped some fishing tackle although there was a shout that he dropped a penny. It wasn't until Lord C went for 1 of his 5 a day (wee break that is ) that I found out he actually lost his teeth.


After 4 hours of trying and rotating my lines without a nibble I decided that Id go long at 16m and dob some bread, I had an immediate bite but lost it when shipping back but the next time I went over I landed a carp to about 5lb. The wind was getting up a bit and was difficult at this length to present anything s I went over my short lines and still nothing. I decided to see out the remainder of the match and set up a tip rod with a bit of meat and landed another carp straight away. That was it for the remainder of the match for me. Lord C landed a skimmer that I thought was a bream with the amount of elastic coming out but his bites were few and far between.


I wasn't sad to hear the all out cried after a disappointing match and from the results sheet I'm sure others were also happy,

Sedges - 24.11.2019

Todays outing was at the Sedges fishery on Brick Lake.  A slightly disappointing turn out of 14 anglers were there by 8.30am apart from George who was still smarting over Bolton FC 7-1 drubbing. We went ahead with the draw and drew fro George who eventually managed to turn up. We were fishing 9.30am to 15.30pm and like last week It was slightly overcast but hardly an ounce of breeze and wasn't too cold.

I had Lord C for company on my left today and again for the 3rd week I had Sausage on my other. Apparently not a great area for fish but we have to give it a go. I fumbled around my box to find the deepest rig I had as the levels were about 8 feet according to Lord C, which to my amazement he wasn't exaggerating. I set up 1 rod on the tip to cast to near the rope and 1 line at 8m with ground bait and dead reds and one at 13m micro and managed to get some maggots from Sausage as I didn't have time to get any. For the second week on the trot with George next but one to me I could also see that he had set up the tip. I thought to my self that this could be another fun day listening to the woes of George and his master class tip session.

 Sausage as company on my right had set up the waggler and lead just keeping it simple and after last week with his issues with his reel he promised that he'd bathed it in WD40, however there was still a distinct lack of grease in the reel as every time he wound it in it still squealed like a pig in a slaughter house.

It was all very similar to last week, the all in whistle was sounded and I cupped In on my 2 lines before I sent the tip to the far rope. To my right George flung the tip to the far bank and was apparently using a a similar cage feeder to last week and was trying to knock the fish out. Tony Fry was straight into a carp on the corner of about 7lb and the rest on the tip didn't seem to have much.

 Nothing on the tip so I went over the ground bait line and had a couple of small blades and kept rotating lines but nothing to sing home about. All I could manage was about 30 small fish which wouldn't have been out of place in a small gold fish bowl. Paul was catching some nice skimmers as was Tony Newell. Lord C was also having a night mare but did catch a skimmer that had no tale and was covered in more blisters than Steve King's undercarriage and also manage a couple of small fish that he hooked in the stomach.


Now what I am about to write is not lies - I could see Shane on peg 11 actually bagging and every time I looked up and he was into another his tongue was nearly in his lap. Simon next to him was also was catching, so again the predominantly end pegs on that end of the lake were preforming

The last 30 mins I did hook a carp just on straight lead and 3 maggots but as I got it close I could see that it was wrapped around some red hydro and a Drenhan 1g float, me being the kind hearted person I am, released the fish from my hook but managed to keep the hydro and float to add to my collection.

By the end a few were packing up as fishing was great for some of us and were glad when the all out hooter was sounded.

Avalon Fisheries - 17.11.2019

Todays outing was at the popular Avalon Fishery.  A good turn out of 17 anglers all there by 8.30am so we drew at 8.45 and today we were fishing 9.45am to 15.30pm. It was slightly overcast but not an ounce of breeze and wasn't overly cold, and the lake had a nice sheen on the surface. Lord C had a wander to choose the pegs and all but 3 anglers would be on the same bank.


The previous day there was a silvers match held and the winning peg was nos 11 which produced in excess of 20lbs. So the silver fishermen were licking their lips in anticipation.


George tuned up and said he was doing something different as Dannys pension provider couldn't afford to keep paying out - George was going on the tip, ( apparently purchasing Shanes tip rod) - to be honest must be good as new as Shane wouldn't have caught anything on it.

Today I set up a tip as fishing an end of island peg and 1 line at 8m with ground bait and dead reds and one at 13m micro. I could hear the request to nice guy Rich for help from George as apparently his line was tangled around his rod and he couldn't see properly to untangle. I thought to my self that this could be a fun day listening to the woes of George and his master class tip session.

To my left I had Sausage as company and he set up the waggler and short pole line, however there was a distinct lack of grease in the reel as every time he wound it in it squealed like a pig in a slaughter house.

The all in whistle was sounded and I cupped In on my 2 lines before I sent the tip to the far bank. To my right George flung the tip to the far bank and was apparently using a cage feeder, by the amount of splashing it made at every chuck it sounded as if he was casting a lion cage but after a chat with nice guy Rich he lengthened his cast to get closer to the island and used a smaller feeder;  however I don't think he had any success.

After 30 mins I had my first fish, then another for approximately 10lb in the first hour. It went quiet so I went over the ground bait line and had a couple of roach. Onto a 4mm pellet over the pellet line and a tiny bite that I struck at and the elastic came out but only just a few feet and I thought I was into a bream, after 10mins I landed a decent carp to about 10lb, then nothing again for the remaining hour. I ended up switching between pole lines and tip and managed to catch fairly regularly all day.

Sausage on my left, fishing for silvers, reported that he had hooked 10 carp and landed 3 but had thrown them back; however he was still catching  silvers.

Nice guy Rich to my right was also on the tip casting to and end of island and was catching but apparently they were only small fish and not the regularity that he wanted.

The all out was sounded but un known to me many anglers found it difficult and had already packed away.

TRINITY - 10.11.19

Todays venture was the popular Trinity Waters - Woodlands Lakes. With the weather not being great with a frost followed heavy rain on Saturday and a chilly North Westerly wind we all expected it to fish hard. The forecast for the day was windy to start with and slightly overcast and later it was brightening up with the wind dropping.

When I arrived I was pleasantly surprised by the number of vehicles there. Following on from last weeks disappointing numbers we had anglers returning from their holidays and work commitments and therefore we had 20 anglers that were keen to battle the cold.

After loading the trolley and taking it across the saturated grass I was keen to get my cuppa and squeeze into the hut out of the wind. After a chat with a few there was the want for favourable draws on the far side of the lake where the wind would be on their backs and the sun in their faces compared to that of the near side bank where the wind would be directly I their faces. I paid my fees to Shane and gave Eric some maggots who in return gave me some pinkies,that were to be honest, past their best before date.

Martin did the pegging honours, with Danny organising the draw - Golden Peg was drawn - nos 10, on the far side bank.

I set up 2 silvers rigs as this was my main target today and just in case a carp rig on the edge. I was only fishing 9m today, 1 straight out and the second to my right with some micros on my second line and ground bait and dead reds straight out. I actually set up really quickly and by 9,30 I wondered to my van to pick up some bits and pieces and had a chat with a few, then I was told we were fishing 9.45am to 3.15pm. After beating George to 2nd place last week he gave me a few expletives and told me that he  to smash me today well i think that's what he said in his strange accent.

On the whistle a balled in a small ball of ground bait and put on 2 dead reds and fished straight on top. All going to plan as within the first 1/2 hour I had about 2lb in the net with a few small blades and a few bits and this was steady for 2 hours. Then the wind dropped and the sun came out and I couldn't get a nibble even by alternating between lines. I moved a meter further out and picked u a few more.

On my left Sausage was alternating between the waggler and a small feeder and this was very successful for him with only small fish but constantly catching. George was cursing and not catching and you would have thought he might have learnt a thing or 2 after having a practice on Thursday.

To my right I couldn't see Lord C but I could hear him catching a few and as I had a great view down the lake I could see what people were catching. Danny had caught a nice golden Tench early doors and Dettal had a couple of carp. But there really wasn't much being caught. I had a nice bream around 4lb towards the end of the day and thought I catch 1 or 2 more but that was my last fish. By this time I was getting a bit chilly and people were packing up, so I was happy when the all out was called.
