Todber 15.09.19

Todays trip was the annual clubs away day at Todber Manor. Now to be honest I did  a bit of research and visited the site on the previous Wednesday where there was a match being held. I walked around the lake and gained some good advice from some of the "resident" anglers who informed me that you want to be on or near the "spit" for good weights of 180lb plus but if you drew pegs on the 30 that you'll still catch but the fish were smaller; so again this was going to be about the draw. I discussed various methods and came away with some what I hoped would be useful information.

Detall had said that he would drive on the day but after seeing him on Saturday he told me he was going for a few shandies on Saturday night so I knew this would be a bit messy. I took his van and loaded up on the Saturday afternoon and dropped him home. Later on in the evening I saw a few Facebook pages of him out and knew he would be hanging and true to form when I picked him he was a mess and still intoxicated. So we made our way to Todber and stopped for a Macdonald's Bacon Roll - (never again, how do people eat that crap) and after a few coffees he was starting to sober up

We all met at Todber in good time and had a wander around the shop to buy some last minute essentials. It was a nice relaxed atmosphere where the mickey taking side bets had begun. I had been informed that Lord C had won the overall category for the last 3 away days and Queenie had always become second, was that going to change today as Lord C is on a fine run of form since the middle of August. Was he going to draw the favoured pegs to make it four in a row? The draw was done nice and early to give us a bit of time to set up.

So the draw wasn't favourable for me but for Lord C and Queenie they were in the good areas again. We made our ways to the pegs and I had sausage for company on my left and Danny to my right. To my surprise  I didn't see Danny set up his pole but only a feeder rod which I didn't even know he had a rod. So within 10 mins Danny was set up and raring to go although he did moan that this is not a good silver peg and he drew the same peg last year.

Me, I was happy to be fishing a new venue and set up the feeder to the island, a top2 + 3 + a margin rig. On my tray was some micros, dead reds and some paste so a simple approach. The all in was shouted and I cupped in micros at 2 + 3 before casting to the island. Before I managed to cast I could see that Bob already had one on his pole and I thought this could be an eventful day. I cast to the island and before I put the rod down the line went taught and I was into my first Todber fish. This continued for a spell of an hour to the island before going quiet. The fish weren't big - about 3lb and a few stocky F1'S

I went on my 2 + 3 and continued to pick up Tench, skimmers and F1'S and when it went quiet I would rotate between the feeder and 2 + 3 whilst still feeding the margin. Everyone around were catching with sausage catching some nice skimmers and every time I looked over to Dick his elastic was being tested.

So the day went on and in the last 2 hours I thought Id try paste and that had a great affect with many fish being caught.

The all out was shouted and I had a massively enjoyable day just catching all day compared to my previous weeks disasters where I hadn't caught in the first 4 hours.

Lord C and Queenie did the weigh in and I could tell big weights were caught by the amount of time it was taken to get around. When It came to me 3rd from last to be weighed my sclaes totalled 111 lb my first ever 100lb + haul and was slightly disappointed with the amount of fish that I had caught but pleased with the haul.

HLS Angling - Shiplate - 08.09.19

Todays gathering was at Shiplate on both the canal lakes. A gathering 16 members were booked in today on what was forecast to be a pleasant day with some sunshine and not much wind. The nights now getting cooler and sunny days who knew how it was going to fish. I got to the venue early as normally all lakes are busy and parking can be a bit tight.

I went to get my cuppa and have a sit down with last weeks grumpy champion John and the reformed stroppy Steve to chat about things that men chat about but mainly banded pellets. We wouldn't have looked out of place with a nice Thatchers while basking in the sunshine but a cuppa was suffice.

Due to parking issues the draw took place slightly later today and the start was put back til 10.15.

The Golden peg was draw which was nos 3 on West Pool. The rumour had it that West Pool was fishing much better than Hawthorne so that was the lake to get.

So off to the pegs we walked with me puling nos10 on Westpool so I was knackered before I started setting up with the long walk. George was sitting in the golden peg and was chirping at Danny like a new born sparrow. I had the joys of Martin one side and Danny to the other so I knew id be watching elastic either side of me.

Now I'm not going into my tactics or what I was doing as for the second week I didn't catch until the last couple of hours when I was well out of it so although I caught a couple of carp and a few silvers I didn't weigh and packed up early along with Rich Coles. In my opinion this fished poor and hard except a few pegs where Tony Fry had a good day and Lord C did well again. The man is on fire.

I helped with the weigh in and Tony has a good head of carp, Martin had a nice bag of silvers along with Danny and George although the quality of silver was more like those you catch on a proper canal as the bream just didn't show.

Onto Hawthorne and again the weights were really poor except Simon who used his Somerset Angling fishing insider knowledge to his advantage to weigh a great 147lb

Its a shame that many packed up early due to how difficult conditions were when really at this time of year the weights should be good.

Viaduct 01.09.2019

On a really sunny bright sunny morning saw todays gathering of 16 Anglers fishing on the "Scary" Cary Lake which hold a huge amount of large Carp and a good helping of Silvers. As this was on my second visit to the fishery I had a wonder around the lake and unlike my first visit when I saw a mass of black shadows all very shallow roaming around the lake this time was much clearer, with just a few fish showing. There are a few nice pegs around the lake and with the sun shining these were favourable however the ones in the shade were not so appealing. Peg 90 - 97 looked like the favourable pegs along with the over hanging tree in peg 74 and peg 81 was also a nice peg if it was fished properly.


A wander back to the gathering of fine men and some nice new vehicles on show with Mario Tony showing off his nice Audi. Dettal appeared on the scene carry the long lost Guru Tart who after a lengthy lay off with his bad back. Looking slightly trimmer than normal I thought to myself was he actually eating all the ground bait and sweet corn when he was fishing and now he wasn't he'd lost a few pound, much like his fishing I hear you say.

Dettal came strutting over giving the all I am - now he's working in  Somerset Angling and getting all the fishing tips he said to me, Queenie and Lord C that he was going to smash us up today. I thought enough of that nonsense and strolled to pay my dues to Stroppy Steve and a quick chat with his buddy Corner peg John who was in a confident mood.

I went back to the van to get my gear and Danny and George were at it like husband and wife - quarrelling that is. I had to look twice as I didn't recognise Danny who was sporting a new hair cut who pointed out he'd only had it done as he had to attend a family do the day before. Georges was still hobbling around on his peg leg - someone tell him to take that stone out of his shoe but he was in a good mood this week. A bit of friendly banter between the 2 is always the norm on s Sunday morning and George in defiant mood that he was going to stuff  Danny today and recoup some of his recent partings.

Martin took the honours of drawing the pegs and doing the draw and Danny taking the names so a nice team effort once again to get things rolling.

When I look at the draw from the last match many people were very near to the ones they had drawn before just the next peg along in many cases with Sausage drawing the same peg. With matches on the other lakes, the room was a bit limited again but we all got on with our task in hand. I had Stroppy Steve opposite me right next to the tree so I could see a few rigs going astray here and the possibility of a really stroppy Steve at the end of the match. Brian was opposite to my right and Mario Tony had a nice peg and these were the only ones I could see.

I decided that I was going to target anything today after initially thinking silvers; however I just totally messed up. I set up a top 2+1 to my left with ground bait laced with caster, top 2 plus 2 to my right a small pot of micros and at 13m which I didn't feed. The all in was shouted, 20 minutes in and I hadn't had a touch on the 13m line so went over the ground bait and nothing. I kept an eye on the micro line for any feeding but nothing so I just left it. Back onto 13m line and fed a bit of micro in a toss pot with some slop and within 30 seconds the float dipped and I was into a nice carp, after it taking me around the lake and I thought I had it under control it took off only for the hook to pull. So nearly 2 hours in I had 1 bite and no fish. I kept trying line but nothing, I had feeding fish on the 13m line but couldn't buy a bite. So in desperation after seeing Mario Tony on the tip catching well for the first few hours I decided some corn and micros in the margin. Straight away the float dipped and some pink dual core streaming out of the kit only to produce a perch of about 1.5lb.  Onto my right line and I had 2 small blades so after 3 hours I had 3 fish.

The next 1.5 hours produced absolutely nothing and in desperate times I thought I'll mix up some paste. So after finally getting my rig sorted and paste to correct consistency it was 3pm and only an hour to go, I thought about packing up however the last hour proved eventful. My first put in and I was into a fish and with 2 people behind me watching and me feeling the pressure not to lose it I successfully landed a carp t0 20+ lb  - my biggest ever fish and with a further 3 carp in the next 20 mins. I was hoping that was going to continue but I lost another fish before landing another on the all out.

Steve mean while was swapping between paste and pellet and was catching most of the afternoon and I thought that he'd have easily 200 + lb and Mario Tony who's afternoon seemed to be less eventful than the morning I thought he would be close to that figure as well.

Speaking to both after the match they reported that the fish weren't as big as expected but both put in fine performances even if Stroppy Steve lost as many as he caught; however it must be said, not a moan in ear shot.

Peg 105 - its in the shade all day so whilst other were basking in the sunshine I was freezing my pellets off,  maybe that why the fish weren't there so I felt it was a disappointing day with only the last hour producing for me but what a last hour it was with a total of 67lb - 4 0z. although ITS PROBABLY THE WAY I FISHED IT.

Well done to everyone on a hard day and a mention to Dettal who was smashed up by all of those that he was going  to smash, sometimes the info you have in your head is not the right info, fish the swim not the info.

Now I have to mention John Woolenscroft as when I was packing up John walked by with his trolley which is very unusual as he's normally the last to pack up. I merely asked how he got on of which 20 minutes later after tearing my ears off with his constant moaning about being an experienced angler fishing for a total of 80 hours and not catching 1 single fish on the banded pellet and that Queenie could catch when foul hooking using the same method was just not fishing. A message for you John - if you were that experienced, why on earth did it take 80 hours to realise that this wasn't working for you but you persisted like a Remainer trying to end Brexit - get over it and move on. Why so bitter was it parting with that £1 or that finally you didn't draw a corner peg? What's worse he drove off quicker than Stroppy Steve hooking his next fish and didn't say well done!!

Chilton Trinity 18.08.19

Todays venue was the popular venue of Trinity Waters on Woodlands Lake. The weather was set fine with a forecast of  the odd shower but mainly sunny spells. 16 eager anglers were booked in today with their sights on framing and the normal candidates hoping to win their side bets.


Following the past few weeks of reporting stroppy people their was a really positive vibe around the place today and an air of niceness from those who are normally guilty. Steve Stroppy Warren was a changed man and yes even Mutant George was mild mannered, but how long would this last?


So into the hut to pay my fees and a nice cuppa and then George telling his old time stories when he was younger; how he remembers these is any ones guess. Dettal was in attendance today hoping to frame after his mid week practice on the water and we had a guest visit from Rich Coles son Steve.

So looking at the draw, a few pegs looked favourable with Dave on peg 2 which can be a great swim, End peg John on 13 (now he might say he had Shane to his left but to be honest that is just like having an end peg - his 8th end peg in 9 draws - Dettal in 21, again with nothing to his right and a quarter of a lake to himself and Stroppy Steve on 30.


So we got to our trolleys and anyone would have thought it was a trolley dash with End Peg John virtually running to his swim, he pulled this one last time when he smashed it with nearly 200lb so he was happy. Stroppy John had a smile on his face as he had golden peg - unless this was wind, Dettal was happy to be on the near side rather than the snaggy bank so a few happy faces.


Ive had peg 10 before and it can produce a mixture of fish so I was happy with the draw as I knew I wouldn't frame but I would have a pleasurable days fishing and when you've Queenie next to you whether you catch fish or not  it will be entertaining.


The wind was meant to get up a bit around mid day so I went top 2 + 3 on one line top 2+2 to my left and a margin rig fed with corn. On the all in I potted in a small amount of micros on the +3 line and 6mm on the 2+2 with the aim of leaving for a few hours to go on paste.  Fishing expander on the 2+3 line I ad a small carp first put in followed by a decent skimmer. I had a few fish on this line and intermittently fed the +2 line with a few micros and 6mm. After a couple of hours I fed the margins with corn and micros and just keep an eye out for any signs whilst I changed to my paste line. The wind was starting to increase so by going shorter made fishing more comfortable.


Queenie next to me was catching a few carp and skimmers but he also lost a few foul hookers. Further down the line I could hear splashing fish from End Peg John but not too much seemed to be happening on the other side of the bank only with Mario Tong landing a few. On to my margin with double corn and within seconds the float buried and I struck with elastic shooting out into the middle of the lake which I thought this is a decent fish only for the hookl  ngth to give way. I re-fed the margin but to no avail. Over on the paste and straight into a nice bream. It then went quiet for a while and couldn't get a bit anywhere.


Queenie was struggling next to me as was the others down on pegs 6 + 7 but the other bank was now producing well with Stroppy Steve bagging, Mario Tony was having a fish a chuck and owned up to landing a carp to about 20lb by shouting out that he needed a bigger landing net. Dettal also had a good flourish in the last 2 hours.


Danny and Rich Coles were like machines - constantly catching and repeating the process and I was sure they had a few pound, where as Mutant George was fishing for canal sized roach as he couldn't get anything going.


After stopping feeding on all lines I went onto the paste line and I managed to then pick up a run of carp and bream with my final fish being landed on the all out.

Well done to the framers and those who won their nuggets, will George find his form as he's being battered by Danny of late. Will queenie find his form again when his mate Lord C returns as he's fishing like he's lost his right arm at present. Can stroppy Steve still keep up his pretence of being happy.

Avalon Fisheries - 11.08.19

Todays match was held at Avalon Fisheries with another god number of 18 keen anglers on show to put their skills to the test. The last time we fished this venue we had severe heavy rain and thunder storms which I was hoping wasn't going to happen again. It was slightly breezy but no where near as windy as the previous day and the sun was shining so that was a good start.

I arrived nice and early thinking Id be the first one there but to my surprise Tony Fry was nattering to Stroppy Steve. What a difference a week made, Stroppy Steve opened my van door, spoke to me civililly and was generally being a nice guy. I knew he was after something, which was not to be mentioned too much in this blog. John Wolstencroft approached me and thanked me for a nice write up on his stroppy mate, which Steve took in good grace but how long could he keep up the pretence.

Now with Stroppy Steve not being so stroppy today it was the turn of George. You would have thought with all the moaning he was doing, which was to be fair a lot more than Steve was last week. that the both of them could be mistaken for husband and wife - who's who's is your decision. I can only imagine that both members have had a lack of sleep of recent times.

A surprise member turned up with Lord C making an appearance when he was meant to be on holiday; however it was unfortunate that his holiday flights had been cancelled and he had managed to get them for the Monday so with nothing else planned turned up to fish - now that's dedication. After about a month away with family commitments Steve King also returned to the scene to grace us with his presence.

The reports that the fishing was good, as the previous day in the driving winds and rain, many a net full of silvers were showing with reported bags of 60lb and good numbers of carp. Now in my opinion that's always a bad thing, as the expectation levels increase, which inevitably increases frustrations at the end of a match if it didn't fish as good. but only time would tell.

So with the pegs all marked out and the golden peg on nos 5 being pulled, it was time for the all in. I picked for Tony Fry as he was with the bag and didn't he frown when I pulled him peg 3. I wanted a number that I hadn't chosen before as on previous occasions I drew in the 20's which has always seen me frame, but its a very long walk.

I pulled peg 9 today so not too far to walk and the only choice was my target fish but with Danny one side of me and Sausage the other who would be fishing for Silvers and with the end of an Island to go for I had to go for Carp. With the wind blowing down the lake I decided to go on the tip for the first hour but feed a 5m line with ground bait and dead reads and a 13m line with 6mm pellets.

I had my first fish after 15minutes a 1lb pasty, in fact the Ginsters pasty that Sausage was eating was bigger, this was followed by a better fish then I lost one at the net with a hook pull. I changed my hook sizes from a 16 to a 12 and netted another. After the hour I had about 15lb of fish. I toped up both lines again and went on the tip and landed another 10lb in the next hour whilst checking for feeding fish on my other lines. The tip dried up after the second hour so onto the ground bait line but not a thing. Onto the 13m line with expander and a fish straight away of 5lb. The bites weren't coming as quick as I wanted so I thought id mix some paste which I previously didn't mix due to the wind but as it suddenly died down I thought this could be a good time to go onto it.

First put in and a fish, next put in and another fish but lost this one as it took me around the leg of the pallet. I stayed on paste bagging for the next hour until it went dark and the heavens opened with thunder and lightning. I couldn't see a thing so I opted to feed my 13m again but put the tip out until it stopped raining. Nothing on the tip whilst it rained even though I was constantly feeding when on the paste line.

The rain stopped, the sun came out, the hat went on and then back on the paste. This worked well until the end of the match when with 10mins to go I hooked a fish that had me struggling to control which ended up in my net of a 10lb ghosty - the first one I caught. Rich Coles, John Bradford and Sausage had all packed up early and stopped to ask what I had, I thought I had about 100lb which would have been my first ton and was happy with how the day went.

The  was shouted as Id just dropped another lump of paste in and over to the scales.

So Mario pipped me again on this venue with a fine ton + and I was slightly disappointed not getting a ton but happy with my performance.

The main men, Lord C, Queenie and Dave Allen were not on the frame but don't hold your breath as they will be back with a vengeance I'm sure.

George had yet more moaning to do with another £1 going to Danny and Stroppy Steve got 3rd in silvers with 2 nice chub in his nets which bought a smile to his face but soon started stropping around on learning his mate had 2nd overall. By the time everyone was gone, Stroppy Steve was still waiting for his mate to return from packing all his gear away so he could get a pint - now that's worth moaning for and John you need to stop putting out so much gear out.

HLS Summerhayes - 04.08.19

Todays meeting was at my local Summerhayes fishery on Sellick's pond. A short 5 minute journey for me enabled me to do a swift U turn to go back and get my bait that I had left in the fridge and after arriving at 8.15am  the car park was a mass with anglers with both Sellicks and Longs being fished today.

The weather forecast was of warm sunny spells with showers expected around 14.00 and 16.00 so I was hoping they were wrong. It was a very muggy morning and was surprised  to see Danny wearing his hoody over his shirt whilst others were in shorts and T-Shirt.

A warm welcome from the ever friendly posy of anglers and owner Pete who made me a nice cuppa. A good turnout again today with 18 Anglers in attendance even with a couple of regulars on holiday or sick. George was in friendly voice today as we went to collect our keepnets, it must be something to do with having his hair cut, although his hobble is getting worse he said that's where he keeps the golden nuggets he takes from Danny each week - now that's fighting talk.. I had a quick chat to John Woolenscroft only to be met by his fishing Pal Steve who from the first minute was moaning more than those remain Brexiteers after their referendum loss, all about losing his £1bet last week and now he's getting a reputation of moaning more than Eric and George put together.

Dettal came over with a top 2 and some elastic and asked if I could elastic them, so I started to thread a nylon through the top section whilst George said he would have it done in 2minutes. Dave Allen set the stop watch and George started threading through the puller and tapping the end to get the elastic out. After 5 minutes and I frustrated George I suggested he took the aligner out which we duly did which made the task so much easier. Very funny to watch George doing this but in the end the job was completed and Dettal had another top kit done.

I had a walk around the lake and the water level was very low. It looked about 2 foot lower than its normal depth with the under-earth showing under the platforms; however there were lots of fish showing. It was reported that the Silvers only match had produced small weights the day before but the carp were showing on worm and maggot so could be in for a good day.

For me peg 14 was not a bad peg with a little chuck on the tip into a small cove in the bank and a small island. My down side was that I had to put up with stroppy Steve but on a plus side I had Danny on my other side so could watch a class angler in action. To be fair I was lucky as I could see Dave Allen just 2 pegs down and to my left Mario Tony, Locky and Lord  who are also good anglers.

The all in was shouted and I decided that the tip was first port of call and also fed at 9m with micros and dead reds and top 2+1 with 6mm for paste, and a margin line fed with meat micros. Before I even finished cupping in - Danny was already into a carp - not his target species though.  After 15mins I had my first fish of about a 6lb carp followed by a smaller one on the half an hour. Steve next to me was also on the tip and caught 3 on the trot but It then went quiet for a while so I tried the 9mline with double maggot and caught a nice little mirror carp. So after an hour I had about 12lb. I kept feeding the 5m line and the margin to have a good go at it around 1.oo pm. I thought that if this continued I would have a good session. The weather seemed to warm up and Locky frightened the fish into submission by removing his T-Shirt by revealing his some what relaxed toned torso, so I just copied suit to show of my tan only to get abuse from my Stroppy neighbour. The next hour didn't produce on the 9m line so I went back on the tip and 3 quick fish. Stroppy Steve could see that I was catching so he also went out on the tip and it slowed up form me. I did lose 3-  what felt like good fish on the tip. I did see down the lake Lord C doing something that I hadn't really seen him do before where he started on the pole and then went on the tip and continued for large periods of time on the tip - however he was catching well. Again on the 9m line and again nothing so I then went on the 5m line at about 1pm thinking this would liven things up but my float just stayed there, which was a bit strange as I could see Dave Allen now start bagging on the paste.

I could see fish moving into my margin so fished the next 2 hours fishing there, losing yet another 3 fish to the delight of Stroppy Steve who then had Karma come his way as he lost fish after fish after accusing me of poor angling. What was funny to see was that I could see his frustration getting worse as his neighbour the mighty Dave Allen was bagging.

I finished well with 4 fish in the last half an hour then my 7th lost fish right on the all out.

It was much more enjoyable than last week with the fish showing even if I did lose a few and as much as it is frustrating, for me watching good anglers around me can only help.

So well done to Lord C who actually wanted the other side of the  lake and to Rich Coles who pipped George and save the Golden peg. I guess George will be hobbling even more next week with yet another nugget in his shoe and Stroppy Steve will need to be avoided at all cost next week after his mate ripped him off of another nugget by picking a flyer end peg.

The all important results

Viaduct - 28.07.19

On a really sunny bright morning saw todays gathering of 17 Anglers fishing on the "Scary" Cary Lake which hold a huge amount of large Carp and a good helping of Silvers. As this was my first visit to the fishery I had a wonder around the lake and saw a mass of black shadows all very shallow roaming around the lake. There were a few nice pegs around the lake and some that I could see were going to be shady most of the day but most pegs looked appealing.


A wander back to the hut where I had a look around the shop and a nice cuppa and as Shane was not here today Steve was doing the honours of collecting fees.


Martin took the honours of drawing the pegs and doing the draw and Danny taking the names so a nice team effort to get things rolling.


We had the return of Dettal this week after a few weeks out and a few guest who made the numbers up.


The draw took place and after redrawing the golden peg this was pretty safe as Chairman Kev's peg nos 80 was drawn.

With matches on the other lakes, the room was a bit limited but we all got on with our task in hand. I decided that I was going to target anything today and set up a 9m, 5m, and a margin line for later but also set up the waggler and the tip. Well 30 minutes in and I hadn't had a touch on the waggler so went over on the bomb. After 10 mins the tip went around only for me to land a skimmer to a pound, next cast the same again and same result. Opposite me Eric had a nice tussle with a greedy carp then he lost one or 2. I couldn't get a bite for the next 30 mins so I went on to my 9m line with worm and caught a few blades but couldn't get them to feed with confidence and only small. After 3 hours I went onto 5m line but couldn't get any thing apart from small blades and a perch. For the final hour I went onto corn in the margin over a small pot of micros and landed a nice bream and a couple of skimmer before landing a carp of about 7lb.


 The all out was called and what I felt was a disappointing day was felt by others as the normally high producing weights just hadn't produced.

Well done to everyone on a hard day and a mention to Dettal who apparently had a bout 30lb of silvers in the net but managed to pack up 1 hour before the all out. I told him to stop buying those Mickey Mouse Watches - now Mickey Mouse has bought a Shaun Larkham Watch.
