Friday 8th January 2016 - AGM

HLS held its first AGM at the 37 Club near Woolavington, Somerset.

21 members tuned out for the event and were welcomed by chairman Bob Pascoe. It was reported that the membership is closed with a total of 49 on the register.

All members are reminded that subscriptions are due, please pay the Treasurer.

After a healthy discussion on a number of issues, officers and committee members were elected. The result is as follows:-

It was agreed to hold a presentation and social evening on the 12th February at the 37 Club, time to be advised.

Wednesday 6th January 2016 - Emerald Pools

18 of Dads Army assembled in the car park on what turned out to be the best day's weather we have had for a long time.   The fishing was not bad either; plenty of fish caught, Ruby producing better than Sapphire. Bend It and I set out to do the pegging with 9 on each lake.   When we came back to the car park I was thinking we needed more swims, but we had got it right.

Money collected, Alan paid, we made the draw, and spread ourselves around the lakes.   I drew peg 16 on the carpark side of Ruby.     I felt like a daffodil between two dandelions!!  Dave Harvey to the left Pete Robot Duck to my right.   My preparation was nil as I had been busy on Tuesday, the fish were getting leftovers from Sundays maggot and caster, not very exciting.   I bellowed the all in at 9-45  put in a small amount of free offerings and set about it.   My first fish was a roach about 11/2 inches long, and I am thinking all negative thoughts.   Across the lake Simon Garbutt was catching decent roach at a good rate, not good news, and he continued doing so for the next 5 hours.

My day improved, with a steady catch of small carp and roach going to the net, until stopping an hour from the end.   I was feeling quietly confident but Robot Duck's last hour produced carp after carp, wiping me off the map.   Dave, on my left, was using his favourite saying "I dont't know what I am doing wrong" then mentioned he was being hammered by the IDIOT on the next peg, namely me, naughty words Dave.

3 o'clock all out, pack up, and Dany and I start the weigh in.  Danny is having a smirk, which generally mans I have to give him a pound for most silvers, and with 15lbs 8ozs of quality roach he deserved it.  Simon had 13lbs 12ozs of Silvers on  Ruby.  My 39lbs 4ozs was way behind Robot Petes 58lbs 4ozs,  I should have blown the whistle an hour earlier!!  A good match with the results below.

Sunday 3rd January 2016 - Sedges Brick Lake

Weatherwise not the best start to 2016, but 20 of HLS arrived to fill all the pegs on the lake, and empty it of fish!!! Thats a laugh.    Everyone had plenty of chat while Denise made drinks and the peg numbers were sorted.   My Treasurer, having recovered from the flu, collected the money and sorted the pools money.  The draw was made and Danny put names to the respective peg numbers.  Danny drew his resident peg 4 , and, feeling confident, I drew peg 12, not over happy with that I trudged though the mud and rain to prepare to fish.  On my right was Mike Bend it like Bendell, and to my left Big Bird Rob Eagle, giving me plenty of competition.

Horny tooted at 9-45 giving us an extra 15 minutes of fishing.   I took out the ledger rod, which brought out comments about which end to use, I ignored these, then had to ask Mike if I could lend a feeder!   Mike and I perservered with the feeder for an hour and a half, then we got desperate and tried everything else,  to no avail. 

The weather improved, and Danny and I did the honours with the weigh in, which resulted in a first time winner overall, Dick Hurford, with a commendable 84lbs 10ozs  off peg 10.  Well done Dick.   The full results are below.

Emerald pools on Wednesday next, followed by Trinity on Sunday 10th. I look forward to seeing you then.

Wednesday 30th December 2015 - Viaduct Campbell

What a day!!! 50mph winds and rain you do not want to remember.   Eleven very brave lads of Dads Army knowing what to expect, turned out to tackle a very difficult match.   Badger Steve opened the cafe room, and sorted out the peg numbers for the club.  I marked off the names, took the money, then made the draw, asking forgiveness and a low number draw please.

My prayer was answered, I drew peg 112, which was a bit exposed but the wind was on my back.   Nothing fancy today; fished short, feed steady, and hope for skimmers and tench; neither species decided to visit my swim, just a fair amount of small roach and some large carp, which in the process of landing of these I managed to loose a No.3 pole section in the lake.   Danny, being an expert retriever, found and recovered it at the end of the match.   Thank you very much Danny.  

At 3-00 o'clock I shouted all out, and the weighing began.   Roger first at peg 110 with 89lbs of  carp, a good start, but not good enough as you will see on the complete results sheet at the end.

Unfortunately there was a downside to what I thought was a good day, showing the spirit and strength of HLS in really adverse conditions.    The most important consideration of all anglers, whether match or pleasure fishing, should be the fish.   Not for the first time we had an overloaded keepnet.   The fishery rules are very clear about this, and when Steve phoned and gave me very severe earache, I assured him this would not happen again.   His response was,  that re-occurrence would mean our club would not be welcome at Viaducts, a sentiment which in his position I must endorse.  "NO ONE WANTS DEAD FISH"   Let's resolve and put this one behind us at the AGM on Friday 8th January .

Next its Sedges Brick where we have a full lake with reserves, then at Emeralds on Wednesday next week.

Sunday 27th December 2015 - Trinity Woodlands

On what started out as a very rainy day 22 anglers arrived and disembarked with their gear.  The chat was good, and the weather improved on what turned out to be a good competition.

It was good to see Micha, who recently became a mum for the first time, having given birth to a healthy girl; her name is Lily.   Micha made the tea,  I took the money and prepared tickets for the draw.   I drew peg 9, which is middle of the far bank,  which is  OK.  I feel the venue is very fair, you  can win from any peg.   My mind was set on an easy match, so nothing fancy;  two rigs, one four sections in front, the other shallower for the margin to my left.   Horny tooted at 10-00, and the session began.   Two small balls of green and micro laced with squats in front, with hand fed castor and maggot to the left.   Fishing dead depth I soon caught some reasonable Roach, which got smaller as time passed, then a bonus Tench of 2lbs.   The day progressed with plenty of bites, which, at the weigh in, produced 12lbs 4ozs of silvers; enough to win the silvers, with not a Carp in sight!!

       The guys packed up, and Mike Davis, Danny, and myself completed the weigh in.   The results below.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR

The feedback from Sundays Fur and Feather was 100% good and positive.  A credit to you all that our Club is thriving.    

I wish you all the seasons best wishes, and success for the coming year, when  I hope to share your friendship and company at our matches.
