Sunday 29th January 2017 - Emerald Pools

Well, there was only one word to describe this match...... DAMP!!

We all knew the forecast but this didn't deter the mad men of HLS to assembly at the Emerald Pools. Emerald and Sapphire were our lakes for the day whilst another club had Ruby. I have always enjoyed this venue, let's hope the rain wouldn't kill my mood. Chairman Bob pegged 20 swims and the moaning began, lol.

There is plenty of silvers at this venue and that was how I decided to spend my day. I got peg 16 and that turned out to be on Emerald, by the fir trees that separate Emerald and Ruby. I had a lot of water in front of me and any carp man would immediately target the reeds in front. I decided on a nice easy line in front of me at 10m. I have a couple of rigs that are mainly used at this venue with the water being a maximum of 3 ft deep. My bait tray contained 4mm soft pellets; some with strawberry flavour and some normal. I also had bread and maggots. I did try small pieces of paste for 10 mins but it didn't offer anything different.

I got myself all set up and under the brolly ready for a day in the rain. From the first put in, I caught small skimmers and roach. This was the scene for the rest of the day. I did have a small common and crucian  and I tried increasing the bait size to get better fish but it wasn't to be anything other than the skimmers and roach. It turned out that I was fortunate with my lot because many of the others struggled. I couldn't see much at all during the day and so it was only at the weigh in that the days' stories came out.

As you'll see, the score sheet got a bit soggy so these are the results:-

1st Overall - Eric Searle
1st Overall Silvers - Paul Bowyer...... And another golden peg pot!!

Emerald 1st Overall - Neil W
Emerald 1st Silvers - Danny

Sapphire 1st Overall - Shane
Sapphire 1st Silvers - Pete

I would like to thank all those who stopped to help me on Sunday when my car sadly rolled to a halt and died, especially that nice charming sweet Sheriff Danny!!!! who arranged a trailer to transport said car to a garage.   Let's hope Sylvie, that's my passed away car, will reach the happy knackers yard in the sky.  AMEN TO THAT.

That does not mean I'm not upset with that nasty old  Sheriff, who took another nugget from my pocket, I have heard reports he was seen getting measured for a suit, paying for it in pound coins??

See you Wednesday at Avalon 9-00 o'clock draw

Wednesday 25th January 2017 - Sedges Canal

There was another hard frost with lots of ice on the surface, but this did not stop ten intrepid men of Fish Troop Dad's Army.   James was back from his holiday, nicely browned to a crisp and showing lots of photos of various fish of humungous sizes he had caught in Thailand.

I walked the lake with Bend It, we decided pegs 49 to 59 had less ice, and although we were close together might fish better.   I collected the money and completed the business,  so it was off to the draw.   A couple of the lads were going to be late due to traffic problems, but we got on with it.

I drew peg 55 which was not the best, Bend It was on my right with Graham to the left.   I shouted "Get on with it" (my favourite saying) and off we went.   First chuck and Bend It had a nice chub, and I thought this might be OK, but alas for me it was not to be, I had to struggle for two small fish.   There were some very good weights caught considering the weather conditions, and the sun did shine on us.

Venue expert George won with 14lbs 9ozs of skimmers and chub,  and that Bad Old Sheriff won silvers.   I don't mind these two GENTLEMEN!! winning, but when Danny showed me his new boots he said he had bought with my nuggets, and George was giving me some lip, plus Bend It reminding everyone I hadn't caught 2lbs AGAIN?   I said he who laughs last had caught the most fish.  Beware of embarrassed angler.

A great day lads, see you all at Emeralds on Sunday and Avalon next Wednesday.

Sunday 22nd January 2017 - Trinity Woodlands

The weather continues to make life uncomfortable and the fish scarce, but not for all of us, as can be seen by the results.   Twenty of us were on parade, some of whom looked a little reluctant,  hoping perhaps the lake would be frozen as it was on Saturday, but today it was looking good and highly fishable.

Treasure took the money, I picked the pegs, so it was all ready for the draw.  The Golden Pegs were 9 and 27, The King got 9 and I got 27,  I fished between George and Horney, and was not feeling very confident.

At the moment there is a lot of chat, so while I had 20 present I took the oportunity to assure the lads I would be continuing to run the club until either, unable to, or requested to stand down.    So let's stop gossip and rumouring, and get on with enjoying our fishing and social life.  ENOUGH SAID.

At 9-45 Horney tooted for all in and it was not long before fish were being caught, but not in great quantities.  My day was as I thought, so with little caught, I did not weigh in; but I was not alone .  At the all out toot my gear was already in the car, and I was standing by with the scales, The Sheriff came to my aid, so we got on with it.   There was not much to do until we got to peg 15 and Tony Newell, who seemed to have hogged all the carp.   He had two nets with 98lbs 4ozs!!   which made me think what happened to the rest of us,  as the next weight was 15lbs 9ozs.

I enjoyed the day and look forward to Sedges on Wednesday, and Emeralds next Sunday.

Wednesday 18th January 2017 - Avalon Fisheries

It was the best day out for a while, ten of Dad's Army arrived on what turned out weatherwise to be warm and dry.   Heather came to open up and take the money.   I selected the pegs and did the buisness.   In a short time it was the draw and still no complaints,  I was beginning to think George had gone home!!!

Pete got the Golden Peg number 5, and he did the buisness on the day.   When everyone weighed in it was silvers which predominated.

I drew peg 19, and at last caught some fish!!    I came second in silvers, there was no contest against that nasty old Danny, who weighed in with 19lbs 10ozs, which was a great catch for January.

On Sunday it's Trinity, and next Wednesday Sedges

Sunday 15th January 2017 - Sedges Brick Lake

We had a full lake of twenty today, and again it was very windy.    It was going to be the luck of the draw who got the comfort zone, anyone who fished eleven upwards got the wind full frontal.   I drew peg twelve, and the Golden Peg was eight.

Battle commenced at 9-45.      It soon became obvious that the selected swims would catch carp, but not many silvers would show, and so it was.

Only 50% weighed in, so well done to the others.   The results are below.

On Wednesday we visit Avalon, and Sunday next Trinity.

Wednesday 11th January 2017 - Emeralds

A good turn out of 13 by Dad's Army on a very windy day, but no problem at Emeralds, where we are well protected by trees etc

I went around and pegged the lake, no Treasure, so I collected the money, and did the buisness.   Peg seven was the Golden Peg, and I was last in the hat for my swim.   George was on my right with Ninja on the left. At quarter to ten several shouted the all in.  The great thing about Emeralds is you always get a few bites, in my case a very few.   I spent the day watching the others catch, and listening to the chat in quiet contemplation.

As the day progressed it got a little colder, and by the all out I was packed up and ready to weigh the lads in.   Danny, as usual, is ready to help, and half an hour later we have a result.   Most people caught, with Baz continuing his good form winning the silvers, Danny was the not very pretty bridesmaid.  The winner overall was Bend It, with 30lbs of those nasty carp, with Graham the runner up with 27lbs.

On Sunday we are back to Sedges, with Avalon next Wednesday.

                                   Get on the phone!!!

Monday 9 January 2017

Sunday 8th January 2017 - Trinity Woodlands

After the New Year celebrations it was back to the serious business of winning the £1 from your mate. 26 eager anglers arrived at Woodlands, some happier than usual and some moaning more than usual, but all agreed it was going to be hard fishing. The hut was full of chatter and bullsh*t and Bob, Danny and Tony did a good job of staying calm among it all. The was only one golden peg today and that came out, peg 9. At the draw my hand came out with the same number. It's the second time I've had the golden peg at Woodlands but so could I bring home the money today. If it was then it would be by winning the silvers because I had already decided to fish the waggler as my main line.

Peg 9

I set up my 11ft carbon active rod with a crystal waggler and a size 20 hook to fish caster, maggot and soft pellet. The water was deep, about 8ft. I then set up a tip rod with a small cage feeder but this never saw one bite. Lastly, I set up a rig for the margin on a top 3, but that again never registered a bite.
So, the day was all about the waggler, fished at about 15m, dotted down to a couple of mm. It took about 30 mins until my first bite, which I missed. Feeding caster and alternating the hook bait, I found that caster was all the fish were seriously interested in.
In that first half hour there was a couple of carp found by others, while Chairman Bob hooked two in two put ins but both breaking his rig. That seemed to kill his swim and he had a quiet time after that.
My second bite produced a lovely perch of about 2lb so that raised my hopes. I continued to have bites but only from small roach about razor blade skimmers.
Steve King was next to me and seemed to be having success on the tip with a cage feeder, getting small skimmers but more regularly than me. He was then interrupted by a carp which ruined his swim for a while. He had another later on and these plus his silvers gave him 4th on the day.
I reckoned on about 4lb with 30 minutes to the whistle but then had some great luck with a nice bream and perch in two casts and my total came to 7lb 2oz.

I had been watching Danny pull in regular silvers for most of the match and reckoned he would take the prize. But Paul Bowyer was across from him on Peg 15 and had done better. His second silvers win in as many matches. We all thought that the overall winner was between Eric, with 3 carp and Tony who had a couple of huge carp. However, the Great Western, fresh back from his Norwegian Xmas snatched top spot by 11oz.... Nice one!!

I got 3rd silvers and noted that there was some unusual £1 wins. Kev got a carp to take the nugget from Horny Beards who had caught a 2oz skimmer..... or was it a tin foil wrapper. Poor old Phil suffered his second defeat at the hands of his Pi mucker, Shaun Larkham. Danny secured his nugget from George but will have to wait for the coin from Bob who went home early.

It was an entertaining day even if the fish were scarce. See you soon chaps.

1.  Election of Officers to Committee.

Chairman and Match Secretary         Bob Pascoe
Treasurer                                           Tony Fry
Secretary                                           Marilyn Pascoe
Social Secretary                                Phil Beards
Scales and Pegging                           Martin Western, Steve King                                                     Blog                                                  Ross Baker

2.  Membership:-
It was agreed that membership remains closed, and be discussed again in
March, with a meeting later if it was thought to be necessary for a change.

3.  Away day and Fur & Feather:-
The decision was to give priority to members attending most matches downward for the away day.   The Christmas match open to all who have paid the annual membership fee.

4.  Membership Fee
It was unanimously agreed the annual fee be set at £10-00 for 2017. The main reason for this was, when having to pay a whole lake fee when we are short of the required numbers. It was felt it is not fair to penalize those who turn out.

Meeting closed at 9-15p.m.

Post meeting:

I propose an EGM to have a position of Match Booking Secretary. This person would be responsible for arranging venues for matches at least two years in advance, and also informing fisheries of the numbers expected two days prior to each match.

This meeting to take place next Friday week. Names for this post to be put forward A.S.A.P.

Wednesday 4th January 2017 - Viaduct Match Lake

Just seven struggled to take part in the match today; it's a pity to see Dad's Army taking so many casualties.   The chat was all good, and the weather gods shone down on us, what more can you ask for?

Young Badger Matt was looking after us today and selected the pegs to be fished, the Golden Peg being 44, which our Welsh Wizard drew, and he did it justice.   We knew the fishing would be hard, and probably best weights would come from one area, and so it turned out.

I drew peg 46 at the bottom end and watched Brian catch a variety of fish for 32lbs while I struggled to catch 15 small fish for 1lbs 9ozs!! so giving Bend It more ammunition for his comments about my lack of form.   To make matters worse Mike on peg 42 won the silvers with 13lbs; I will put him on extra duties.

THIS FRIDAY IT'S THE AGM 7-30 AT THE 37 CLUB

                               Wednesday 11th January       Emeralds

Sunday 1st January 2017 - Sedges Brick Lake

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND GOOD FISHING TO ALL

What a day to start 2017!!  On arrival it was quite warm with no wind, after an hour into the match it was raining, blowing, and the temperature dropping.   I can honestly say it was the worst day of the year!!!

Fourteen turned into the car park, Denise and Jamie looked after us.   No Treasure today,  his son became ill, we all wish him a speedy and complete recovery.  Jamie selected the pegs, and Denise the Golden Peg numbers 5 and 17.   I sorted the cash and it was on with the draw.   The Golden Pegs went to Matt and Sausage, who will be facing each other across the lake.   I drew peg 10 the sheltered corner so was not displeased.   No pole today, George's pound shop glue failed again,so I opted to fish the tip, Tonto came to give me advise, such as, the reel goes on the thick end of the rod, and my set up was illegal etc.   He did turn my reel into a right handed set , and lent me a rod rest, saying I might start fishing by 1-00 o'clock.

At 9-45 Horny tooted and things got underway.   As expected it was going to be hard, and at the end of five hours of struggling only seven weighed in, the top weights coming from one area.   Ninja Eric weighing 55lbs on peg 18,  Horny 28lbs 12ozs on peg 20.   The silvers and the Golden Peg went to Sausage,  with 8lbs from peg 17.

Well done everyone who fished, it was trial by combat.

Wednesday next we visit Viaducts Match Lake, and Sunday its Trinity Woodlands.

                                                     Until then
