Wednesday 29th June 2016 - Viaduct match lake

The weather forecast was rain, rain, and more rain, so I would like to thank the ten MEN who turned out to fish.   They were duely rewarded with some good fishing, and a poor imitation of a light shower through the whole match.

I took the money, sorted out the pegs with junior Badger Matt.   All the business done it was draw time, the golden peg was 43.  Bolton George had the worst peg on the lake, so said George, which made everyone laugh.   Tungsten Dave got lucky 43,  and it was off to the bank for a bit of competition.   I drew peg 47 and decided to fish under the tree to my right with caster and sweetcorn.  All was going well until I tried to swing a plump roach and lost my rig in the tree;  after that it was all downhill.

The Sheriff fished another good match for first in silvers.  Stan the Man won overall, and so ended another good day wilth good mates.   The full results are below.

Next Sunday its Avalon, and Wednesday the same venue.

                              See you there.

Sunday 26th June 2016 - Viaduct Campbell

22 Anglers, the maximum for Viaducts Campbell, turned out for what promised to be a productive six hours.   All the buisness was completed, the draw was made, the golden peg going to Treasure, and we made our way to the bank.

I drew peg 127, and caught 27lbs 6ozs, which normally would be a good weight, but not today.  Sheriff Danny on the opposite bank could not stop catching fish, and ended up with 70lbs 7ozs winning the silvers easily.  Everyone seemed to be catching, Ninja Eric won with 134lbs.

It was a very good match, the full results are below.

On Wednesday its Match Lake Viaducts, and next Sunday Avalon.

Wednesday 22nd June 2016 - Trinity Woodlands

13 of HLS Troop Dad's Army were on parade on a damp dull day, but everyone was in good spirits.   Misha had a gas bottle problem, so there were no hot drinks, but no complaints, she gets away with murder with the lads.

The money was collected, pegs selected, and it was time for the draw, golden peg was 25.   I drew peg 7, with Ninja on my right, and wee dram Parker to my left, both carpers,  so no peace today.

My first fish was a small tench, and then a very quiet rest of the match, amassing 9lbs 8ozs of silvers.  Ninja had a good day with 93lbs, which was good for second.   The weigh in results are below.

Sunday next it's Viaducts Campbell which is full, and Wednesday Viaducts again on Match Lake.

Sunday 19th June 2016 - Avalon Fisheries

It was grey and overcast with light rain for most of the match, but this did not deter 24 of our members.   We had pegs from 6 to 40, as selected by Vic. The golden peg was 36 drawn by Graham Burbridge.

I drew peg 38 next to Sheriff Danny to my left and Tony Newell to my right.   My main bait was sweetcorn, fishing for bream.  Most of the lads were fishing with soft pellet or sweetcorn for silvers,  and banded pellet or paste for the carp.   Horny, back from holiday, sounded off with a toot, and the action began.   Two lines for myself, the first at eleven metres, the other to my right hand margin.   I started with a small amount of feed to each.   I just couldn't get my float to sit right, and spent twenty minutes adjusting shot and rechecking depth, when at last I was satisfied everyone had already caught fish, so I thought it was time for a porkpie and meditation!!   It was then time to catch up and I started to catch fish.   There was a lot of chat going on, you could tell Horney was back, and everyone seemed to be enjoying the day.   I soon got tired of the swim at eleven metres, and came back to eight where I had put some feed, this paid dividends with some decent skimmers.  It went quiet so it was into the margins for the rest of the match .   I guess I am getting lazy in my dotage, for at the weigh in I missed out by a couple of pounds.

The results were as follows:-

1st Overall                   Ninja Searle                              75lbs  7ozs                         Peg 21
2nd    "                        Treasure Fry                             57lbs  0ozs                         Peg 6
3rd     "                        Wooly Woolaston                     47lbs  6ozs                         Peg 12

1st Silvers                   Great Western                           22lbs l0ozs                         Peg 30
2nd    "                        Tivi Harvy                                  21lbs 8ozs                          Peg  7
3rd     "                        Tungsten Tunstall                      20lbs 12ozs                        Peg 32

Well done to everyone, the next matches are Wednesday  Trinity and Sunday Viaduct Campbell

Wednesday 15th June 2016 - Sedges Tile

Dad's Army HLS at the Sedges fishing Tile Lake on what turned out to be a very very wet day.   Fourteen put their paws into the draw bag, but the golden peg was not drawn, at the redraw peg 23 came out and Tungstan Dave got lucky.

I drew peg 38, on my left was in form Tivi Dave, and to my right Martin Coombs plus his dog Flo, who I am sure  gives him advice.   I shouted the all in a bit early and battle started.   The lads loaded their hooks and checked their ammo, caster, sweetcorn, meat and pellets etc. ready for the attack.   Tivi on my left is soon catching fish, denying at least 50% of them, and I thought he was one of the more honest!!   The rain persisted, and my brolly was up and down like a fiddler's elbow. As time passed I was catching a few fish, I said a little prayer to him in charge, hoping the rain will cease in time for the weigh in, which Danny and I will be doing.

4 o'clock and all out.    I had a good day's fishing, and we had a lot of help with the weigh, thank you   There were plenty of fish caught, with an even match for silvers and overall.  Tungsten won the golden peg and the silvers, and Bill "wee dram" Parker won overall.   Well done to everyone and thanks to Jamie.

Next Sunday its Avalon and Wednesday next its Trinity, I look forward to both, cheers.

Sunday 12th June 2016 - Shiplate Canals

Today is the first anniversary of HLS Angling:  I would like to congratulate all our members for the way they have achieved this in the spirit of friendly competition;  long may it continue.

The two canals were fished. so it was two matches with two golden pegs.

While Treasure collected the money I had a chat with our host Steve, sorted the pegs to be used and drew the golden pegs.  Then came the draw   We had no complaints, Sheriff Danny drew 1 golden peg, and Stan the other. So it was good luck to everyone and lets get to it!

I drew peg 12 on Hawthorns and was quite happy.  On my left was Big Bird, and to my right Steve the King.  My plan was to avoid the carp, fish down the track for skimmers,  the near margin for crucians and others.  At the start just one small cup mixed feed in front, and small amounts of loose feed in the margin.   The plan worked to begin with, albeit slowly, with five small skimmers in the net.   Switching to the inside, two more skimmers and some good roach.   This was how my day continued, with some very quiet spells    The King on my right was having a very busy day, with loads of splashing spoiling my peace.   From what I could hear and see, it looked like it was going to be very close at the scales, which is what match fishing is all about: and so the results showed.

On Westpool, Tony Newall on hot peg 15 came out on top overall, while a surprised Ninja Searle won the silvers.   On Hawthorns The King won overall, and I the silvers by only 1oz from Sausage Bowyer..   There were lots of good weights with three over the 100lbs.   The Silvers did not do so well, mainly because of the carp activity??  Full results below.

On Wednesday its Sedges, followed by Avalon next Sunday..PLEASE phone a.s.a.p this is very important as I need to inform Jamie and Vic of numbers.

                                              Good fishing

P.S  I must  apologise to Tivi Dave, I missed putting his name down last week with a weight of 43lb 8ozs, Bob had written it in but I missed it out    Marilyn

Wednesday 8th June 2016 - Avalon Fisheries

We were at Avalon Fishery on Wednesday 8th June; fifteen of Dad's Army were on parade ready to improve on Sunday's effort at the same venue,   Ian, the hairy one, was in charge of the fishery pegging and weighing in.   We were allocated the high numbers on the opposite side to normal, which made a nice change.

I took the money, selected the golden peg number 43  and paid Ian. Then for the draw, surprise surprise I picked GP 43, the first time ever!   So off to the bank to make all the decisions about where, and what baits.  On my left is Kev who, at 60 something, has fallen in love again, so he is more dizzy than usual !!!   and to my right is Bill Parker.

I started at eleven metres feeding both margins, after 45 minutes of struggling  I began  fishing the right hand margin, which started to produce fish, skimmers up to 1.0lbs.   While I had been doing this, Kev has managed to hook a big lump, breaking his new rod when It went under his platform.   Let this be a lesson to you all you would be ROMEOS, stick to fishing.

I had a pleasant day, catching a good amount of fish, but not half as much as Walsall John, who I saw regularly exercising hsi landing net.   Time passed quickly, and I was reluctant to call the ALL OUT, but 4 o'clock  had arrived.

At the weigh in Robot Duck topped the ton to win, with Tonto a distant second; well done Pete.   The silvers were an eye opener, with four anglers weighing over 40lbs.  Sheriff Danny had 45lbs 4ozs, Walsall John 44lbs 13ozs, and Martin with 41lbs 4ozs.

Many thanks to Avalon for a great match.

Sunday its Shiplate and next Wednesday Sedges.

                               See you there

Sunday 5th June 2016 - Avalon Fisheries

It was Sunday, and a fine day with the prospect of some good fishing.   26 of the lads turned out,  and there was plenty of talk about the draw.   Vic sorted the peg numbers, and the golden peg was number 3.   I took the names and numbers, and we all set out to make our preparations.

I drew peg 20, and was well pleased.   I heard no moans, so everyone must have been reasonably happy.  The fish were blowing close in, and I thought sweetcorn on the hook and a good bag.  An hour passed and not a bite!  Dave Allen on my left started catching skimmers averaging 2lbs, while Bagger Meakin to my right  caught from the off on the waggler.   I phoned my wife, this is useuly a good way to start catching, it worked, and I caught a very small skimmer, it was a beginning, but it was not going to be my day.   Dave did well to my left, next to him was " Bend it" fishing with a hangover, catching a lot of small fish.

At the end of the day Treasure won overall, just pipping Woolly Neil by 11ozs.   The silvers were even closer with Beaker Davis 1oz ahead of Dave Allen.   The full results below.

On Wednesday we return to Avalon, and next Sunday its 2 canals at Shiplate .  There is plenty of room on both.

Wednesday 1st June 2016 - Viaduct Match Lake

Wednesday at Match Lake Viaduct was the venue or Dad's Army on the 1st of June.   Thirteen of the lads turned out, most were looking for the silvers, but also for sport with the Fls which are plentiful in this lake.

No Treasure today, so I relieved the lads of their cash and completed the paperwork.  Badger sorted the pegs and drew the golden peg number 41, so all set for the draw;  Cockerel Lambert drew lucky, first one out of the hat, I waited until last, and drew peg 46 which was a new area for me.  I had Graham Burb on my left and Sheriff Danny on my right, so plenty to keep my eye on.   My intention was to fish caster at about ll metres, so I  put in a small amount of my usual mix to begin with , and a single maggot on light rig to get fish in the net.   This didn't take long, so on to caster, with regular feeding of small amounts of groundbait caster and sweetcorn.   I caught roach and small skimmers, with an occasional bonus fish, this mixed with half a dozen F1s made a very pleasant day's fishing.;  this,  plus a lot of abuse and banter with Danny, what more could a bloke want.  Full results of a very close match are below.

Two trips to Avalon next, one on Sunday, and again next Wednesday.  No restriction on numbers, so do the right thing and phone early.
