Sunday 29th May 2016 - Combwich Match Lake

Sunday 29th May and 26 members arrived to give Combwich Match Lake a try on a warm sunny day.

Treasure is back to collect the ackers, and the monetary side of things, but he brought to my attention a rumble in the jungle about payments, and methods of this on completion of matches.  So before the draw I tried to enlighten the lads to what our cub is all about, mainly not monetary gain, but competition between members who enjoy each other's company, and a good craic.   The outcome was a unanimous carry on doing what we are doing, and what is all the fuss about!!!

So on to the draw, George got the flyer peg 1, while Kev got the golden peg 9.   So off to the bank to set about preparation, everyone agreed the venue looked good, with colour in the water and plenty of features.   Alas all the good signs were deceiving, as can be seen on the result sheet  "Wye Aye man Searle" topped the weights with 21lb 14ozs, with Bolton George second  with 6lbs 4ozs, the rest were history.

On Wednesday we are on Match Lake Viaducts, 14 anglers tops, and next Sunday Avalon with no limit, so  get on the phone.

Wednesday 25th May 2016 - Sedges Brick Lake

Dad's Army at the Sedges on Wednesday 25th May on Brick Lake, all looked forward to a good day's fishing on a fine day.  I was late arriving, due to a senior moment, I left all the paperwork at home, and had to go back for it.   Still no harm done,   Danny collected the money while I spoke to Jamie who sorted the peg numbers.   Denise drew the golden peg number 7.   At nine o'clock the drew was made, and Tonto gets lucky, and the golden money looked under threat.

I drew peg 18, and was more than happy, as I had already decided to have a lazy day fishing short with caster and maggots.   At the all in I cupped in a small amount of mixed loose feed and ground bait, and small fish came to hand quite quickly.   Bend it on my right was catching some weighty specimens, but telling me porkies to the contrary.   I realized I was about 10lbs behind Mike, so it was time to change to sweetcorn on the hook.   This did the trick, and larger fish entered my net, but it was not enough, and I got stuffed by Bend it.

At the weigh in Tonto took 1sr overall and the golden peg with 70ls, while Mike took silvers with 37lbs 4oz. It was noticed Welsh Wizard Brian weighed 3 silver fish, not his usual one, he was also needing some net practice after making a mess of his carp net  HOW MANY YEARS!!!?

Thanks to Jamie for a good days fishing.

On Sunday we will give Combwich Ponds Match Lake a try We are full for that.  Wednesday its Viaducts Match Lake again we are full.

Sunday 22nd May 2016 - Landsend

The weather looked fine and when I arrived quite a few of the lads were taking advantage of the excellent breakfast provided by Di.   No Treasure today so I collected the money and paid Mike, who had sorted out the peg numbers.   Horney took the 50 pence for the golden peg so job done.   Time for the draw, the golden peg was peg 19 and drawn by Shane Western, who was reminded  what happened last time he drew it, an early morning swim!!!!

All the business completed  I drew peg 2 so its was off to the bank, set up and ate a pork pie.  In peg 1 was Paul Bowyer mumbling and thinking about the two fish in his new tank at home and what they had cost him.  On my right I had Tungsten Dave, so the competition should be good.   I set up two rigs both for fishing comfortably down the middle track, easy to feed "but not much" hopefully to catch some skimmers and their larger family.

Horny toots and things got going, in the first half hour I had a carp and a couple of small roach, then no bites.   As the day progressed Tungsten was catching quite steadily, and Paul was putting a few fish in his nets.   My day started to improve with the occasional bream and skmmer, and a couple of crucians as a bonus.  At the all out toot, I feel its going to be close between Dave and myself, but I hadn't a clue what the others had done.

So came the weigh in:  its a big thankyou to Beaker Mike Davies for the gift of digital scales, which worked  a treat, especially  as they put me first silvers with 21lbs 3ozs .   Robot Duck Pete took overall with 70lbs plus.

A good day with plenty of crack was enjoyed.  The full results are below.

Wednesday 18th May 2016 - Shiplate Hawthorns

Dad's Army  on parade, the weather forecast not so good, but we got off light, just a few showers and light winds.

No Treasure today, so I collected the loot, and paid Steve, who selected the pegs to be fished.  The Golden Peg was 3, and Tungsten Dave was the lucky reciprent.   The draw was completed, and we made our way to the bank.  I drew peg 1, and got prepared for carp and losing some gear down in the corner.   My first fish was a carp, so I started fishing to my right and life got better for two hours;  I caught some crucians and small tench mixed up with a  fair amount of carp.

This venue is perfect for our Wednesday matches, as everyone always catches, as was proved this time.  Tungsten just missed out on the golden peg with 70lbs 8ozs Walsall John got 90lbs 6ozs for overall.  Bungalow Barry took silvers with a respectable 22lbs 6ozs.  The score sheet below completes the story.

Its Landsend on Sunday, and Sedges next Wednesday,  Get on the phone for both of these please 01278683243.

Sunday 15th May 2016 - Viaduct Fisheries, Cary Lake

Sunday at Viaducts, and its Scary Cary, so,those using a pole beware of the 20lbs plus monsters..  A good turnout with 21 fishing.  A warm welcome to Keith, who was well remembered for his wading antics after a match,  when he went in search of a good part of his pole which was still attached to one of the monsters.

The Badger sorted out the peg numbers, and Treasure paid the fees, so on with the draw.   Tontos first comment was "No good Bob" as I entered his name beside peg 90.   Bolton George was spotted doing a Usain Boult?? Top silver peg on the lake for him.   For me the draw is one of the best parts of the day, watching the faces and listening to the comments.

It was a cracking day weather wise, I drew peg 88 next to Tonto on my left and Woolly Neil to my right, so no peace for me with all the splashing.

Horny Tooted and the match got underway.  I decided on 11 metres and in close, I brought five different baits.  Starting at 11 a couple of minutes went by,  and I was hanging onto my pole praying for no damage, eventually there was a ping "PING" and my elastic returned into the pole, less rig and dacron .  Looking forward to seeing master Kedge who recommended!!! and kitted up top 2, one bit of luck , the elastic was hanging out of the end, so I tied a crows foot ready for another rig.   So no fish, its loose feed and inside line, and what a nice surprise, a steady flow of fish started entering my keep net.    I was so busy I did not have time to eat my pork pies, but I did manage a couple of doughnuts and a choc bar.

Tonto next door was very noisy,  as was Woolly on my right, but with different results.   Tonto won with 210lbs of BEAST with Neil DNW.

A lot of fish were caught on the day, so a good match. Full results below.

Wednesday its Hawthorns Shiplate and Sunday Landsend

Wednesday 11th May 2016 - Avalon Fisheries

Wednesday at Avalon,  and Dads Army (or is that the Dirty Dozen) had expectations above normal.  Pity about the weather, rain, rain, and more rain.  All the money business is completed, and for the first time it was decided to start a golden peg on a Wednesday;  it was drawn by Shane Western. It turned out to be bad luck for Shane, who, while setting up, slipped on the platform and fell into the water hurting his leg at the same time.  So he had to go straight home to dry out, this resulted in redrawing the golden peg, and it went to Robot Duck Pete.

I drew peg 6 next to Sheriff Danny, who, during the match caught twice my amount, and weighed in with 23lbs plus, but this was not good enough to beat Relegation Bolton George who had 31lbs.  Tonto Coombs won overall with just under the ton.  It was a good match all round.

Sunday Viaduct's Scary Cary, and Wednesday, off to Shiplate and Hawthorns

Sunday 8th May 2016 - Summerhays Long Lake

Sunday 8th May, and the venue was Summerhays on Long Lake.

23 arrived at the car park on a warm pleasant day, all speculating on what the catch would be.  Money taken and paid, the draw was made, giving me peg 17, I was not a happy bunny.   On my left was Cockerel Lambert (Spurs supporter!!!!}, and to my right Bend It Bendell, looking very prosperous by the size of his stomach? Toots has a new pole, and there was much speculation on how long before the first breakage would occur, this caused a laugh, followed by sponsorship talk , which would expel him from the club!!  here here.

The Shakespearean Bummer boy toots, and the match gets underway.   Big Bird drew the Golden Peg again, but not much came from peg 5.   Mike next to me fished well, getting small carp on the inside while fighting with the rushes. But  the roadside swims were favourable, and at the weigh in it proved correct, 1st 2nd and 3rd overall, and top silvers coming from these pegs.

Full results below.

Wednesday 4th May 2016 - Trinity Woodlands

14 of Dad's Army paraded on a sunny morning but with a cold wind blowing across the lake.   Due to heavy traffic the lads turned up at various intervals all with unprintable comments concerning the roadworks etc. Treasure collected the money, 14 pegs were selected, and the draw was made "The Sheriff" taking names.

My knee was killing me, and I limped around in ever decreasing circles.   I drew peg 9 the furthest walk, and had an uncomfortable days fishing into the wind.  After starting 11 meters in front with no luck;  I decided on a lazy day fishing the margins.    The day passed quite nicely, with lots of little fish and one nice carp, which was landed on light gear, and weighed 13lbs 9ozs , so I was very happy.  Relegated Bolton George won the match with, a good net of silvers and carp.  Tonto Coombs came 2nd.  Tungsten Dave won the silvers by default, with Sheriff Danny 2nd.

The weights were not that great, lets hope for some settled weather!!!

Sunday its Summerhays, and next Wednesday Avalon.

                                                                          Cheers

Monday 2 May 2016

Sunday 1st May - Sedges Tile Lake

Pinch punch 1st of the month and all that.......... Actually turn out to be a day all about SW wind, a seagull and a sore ear. There was also some fishing!!

I was third man in the car park and witnessed the arrival of the remaining 17 of the HLS guys looking forward to a day fishing the Tile lake. Jamie had opened up the office and had put the kettle on. Some of the guys arrived after having had breakfast and Horny Beards had obviously had too much coffee because he was much livelier than normal. This culminated in a challenge to the Chairman who obliged and belted him around the ear. Apparently his ear was tender for the rest of the day. I tested this at the end of the match by giving it a good flick!!

Onto the fishing and the the sun was out but a brisk SW wind was driving down the lake. The question was; would the carp follow the wind for the benefit of pegs 30 & 31? At the draw, the golden peg was 27 and this ball stuck to the fingers of 'Golden Nuggets' Chris Rossiter. Would he take another nuggets from Beardsy this week? I drew 26 and so could watch the Nugget Meister at close hand. The favoured corner pegs were secured by Horny Beards, Ninja Eric, Steve King and Martin Western.

I got to my peg and made a quick decision..... Carp!!
I decided on a Pellet waggler, straight lead, pole rig to fish meat at 8m and a margin meat rig. By the time the horn went at 10:00 the wind had got stronger and fishing the waggler to the island became hard work and was put aside. Also, after ten minutes of feeding pellets out to the waggler, my heavy catapult snapped. That left me with the option to put the lead out to the island but no way to feed. So, a quick change to a cage feeder and some wetted 4mm pellets and I sat patiently waiting for bites.

Now a bizarre and amusing thing happened. My gaze drifted to Chris on my left as he was casting his pellet waggler. The float sailed into the air and struck a seagull who was flying towards him. The seagull and waggler and line flew over Chris's head, over the boundary hedge before the gull got loose from the rig and left it up a tree. I accused Chris of fishing floating bread, a method used by a previous member for catching seagulls!!!!

Back to the fishing and after an hours wait I got to carp in quick succession. Thus became the days pattern. I did try the pole lines but felt that the tip was the way to go for the day. I hooked into 10 carp overall but 3 shed the hook. Around the lake, it was clear that the carp had followed the wind and pegs 30 and 31 were busy. Also the other corners were giving up more fish than elsewhere. The silvers buys were quietly pulling out skimmers but no large bream that I noticed. I ended up with 48lb 5oz. The overall winner was Martin Western with 108lb 12oz and Chairman Bob snared the silvers and a nugget from Danny.

The most important result of the day was Horny Beards gaining a nugget from Chris Rossiter, but then Chris did say that Phil did a have a boys peg.
