Wednesday 27th April 2016 - Shiplate Hawthorns

It  was cold but the sun was shining, with the wind on our backs so not bad at all.   After talking to Steve our expectations were not to high, the unsettled weather was not favorable.
Treasurer collected the loot and we were ready for the draw with peg 15 the most wanted.   Tungsten gets the best and later gave 20 reasons why he did not excel.   I drew peg 9 with no complaints or excuses either, after one broken top kit, and a broken knicker elastic my match ended early.

Fish were caught, and I reluctantly parted with a nugget to Danny who won the silvers,  Pete Robot Duck won overall.  Results below.

Sunday its Sedges Brick..... full.  Wednesday Trinity Woodlands...... more welcome.

Sunday 24th April 2016 - Avalon Fisheries

21 Anglers turned up to fish our Sunday match on a cold but bright morning. The lake looked good and speculation started about imaginary weights some might catch!! "Dream on". Tony took the money and pocketed the pools money while Vic and I sorted out the pegs to be fished.   Next came the draw followed by the usual moans and groans; Ninja Searle drew the golden peg.

With everyone set ready for the off, Horney tooted and the fish started getting fed.   There were plenty of roach and rudd in the water,  but us silver anglers know about the large stock of bream marauding in the depths. I drew peg 13 and no complaints. The King was on my right, and Paul Bowyer to my left, so stiff competition.   The match started slowly for me but I was catching a few small fish, then Steve caught two slabs in five minutes and my ambitions went down the drain.   At the final toot I had a very pleasant day, taking a lot of abuse from my 'mates' and weighed in 13lbs 4ozs of silvers.   The bream did show in most pegs, and Avalon promises some really good fishing in the coming months, which we all look forward to; thanks Vic.

The results are below.  Wednesday next its Shiplate Hawthorns room for more.  Sunday its Sedges we are full with reserves

Wednesday 19th April - Landsend Match Lake

A depleted field of just 9 of Dads Army fished on a warm spring day on Match Lake, so we had every chance to catch fish. Mike Bend it and myself selected the pegs to fish, I collected the money and paid Di, ready for the draw.  Pete Robot Duck drew the hot peg 13 and the abuse started.   I drew peg 11 with Tonto to my right, we both watched Pete, who was moaning about 'dabs' in his swim,  but not for too long as the fish started to come.  I had a good day with a steady flow of various species entering the keepnet; at the weigh in 26lbs 11ozs of silvers, good enough for first silvers.   No great surprise that Pete won overall with 65lbs 3ozs.

A most enjoyable day with everyone catching.   Full results below, well done the lads.

Sunday its Avalon and next Wednesday Shiplate on Hawthorns, get on the phone, don't be dissapointed.

Sunday 17th April 2016 - Viaduct - Cary Lake

Sunday morning greeted me with a light frost and a heavy headache (too much vino calapso). My first visit to Viaduct in 2016 and Scary Cary Lake. I armed myself with my Cary tip rod, which is a straight lead set-up but up rated for the Cary lumps. The car park was very full, with matches also on Campbell and Lodge.

After paying my fees I went for a walk around the lake. It was looking to be a glorious day with the sunny rising, although there was a cool NW breeze coming down the Cary valley. I had no preference for pegs but had a premonition I would draw a peg on the diagonal bank. Back to the car park and Bob Pascoe, fresh back from Oz, was in full voice and ready to start the draw. I noted there was a number of cries that he should not have been let back in the country!!!

When my hand came out of the draw bag, I had peg 94 in my hand. So, I was correct about the diagonal bank, just. Peg 94, a feast or famine peg is my belief. There was no one on peg 95, Mike Davis on 96, Chris Rossiter on 97, Horny Beards on 98.

My left hand side…..

Across from me was Brian ‘Welsh Wizard’ Chivers. Local Lass, Emma Drysdale was fishing on Lodge and said she had fished peg 94 a few weeks ago and had 88lb fishing meat short. I had 3 lines in mind, straight lead out 40m, down my right edge and 5m in front. I decided it was a pellet and meat day with paste in reserve. What I did notice when I sat on my box was the trees behind me did a good job of sheltering me from the sun; a shame!!

The first hour of the match was biteless on the tip and so it was for lot of the guys. Chris Rossiter started cheating by foul hooking a lump and had fun getting it in, especially when it went into Horny Beards swim. Chris soon had a second and third and set the pace. I took a rest from the tip and tired down the edge with meat and had two nice perch in two put-ins. Next was a look over the bed of meat at 5m and a 10lb mirror obliged. I alternated the two pole lines and apart from annoying bites from bits I was biteless for the next 3hrs. Chris was catching regular and was looking to be the likely winner. The carp seemed to come on the feed and lots more rods were bending into lumps. Across from me, Brian was fishing the waggler and started catching regular and looked like catching Chris. With 30 mins to go my tip finally went around and a consolation 10lb mirror joined his mate in my net. So, 2 carp and 2 perch were my ‘famine’ total for the day. I didn’t bother with the scales and left for home after becoming quite cold in my shaded corner of the lake.

I had a quick chat with some of the guys, but they were the ones who'd had similar bad days as I. The results show that Chris Rossiter had done enough to fend off that late run of Brian Chivers. Martin Western kept up his winning ways with first in the silvers, from Rob Eagle and our very own kangaroo Bobby Pascoe.

Post Match Note: Bob wishes to thank all of the guys that helped run the matches in his absence..... and Chris Rossiter sends best wishes to Phil Beards and the words "A hat-trick of nuggets now....three in a row"!

Wednesday 13th April - Emerald Pools

Warmer weather was the first bonus for the Wednesday mob, if they could find the way through the fog. Both lakes gave most anglers some sport with Tony Treasure having a great day of silvers giving him overall on Ruby; in fact his silvers was the top weight of the day, well done Tone. Should Des Shipp be worried?
Mike Bendell netted a reasonable weight of carp to give him overall on Sapphire, with the silvers being snared by those silver maestros, Fletcher and Barker.

Sunday 10th April 2016 - Shiplate Canals

With gusting, chilly SE winds blowing into the anglers faces, the HLS guys had a fair day's sport. This visit, the two canals provided similar levels of fishing. The Three Musketeers... King, Allen & Western put some good weights on the board but only the postman got a prize. Well done to Steve and Tony for the overall wins with Danny & Rob picking up the Silvers envelopes.

Wednesday 6th April - Trinity Woodlands

15 of the Wednesday Wonders turned out at Woodlands and peg 15 was well ahead of the rest with Simon Garbett putting 125lb 5oz on the scales and John Barker, 64lb 9oz. Silvers was won by Mike Bendell with a very respectable 24lb 9oz (was that on the waggler Mike?). George framed again with second silvers and 11lb 9oz.

Sunday 3rd April 2016 - Avalon Fisheries

25 HLS anglers assembled at the Vic Bush arena, commonly known as Avalon Fisheries. The sun was out and with a slight breeze we debated our first 2016 visit. A slight green tinge to the water was met with negative comments but the staff had recently put 4 tonnes of chalk in the water to clean the bottom debris. I was early and so had plenty of time to walk around the lake and say morning to a few bivvy boys. There was also a couple who had driven down from the Midlands to fish the Moors lake. One of the guys was unloading and declared to forgetting his landing net. I told him that Vic will happily sell him any Mosella gear you should need.

Pegs 1-34 were closed for us and Vic selected 25 pegs from these. Peg 32 was drawn as the golden peg. I drew second and pulled out number 1. Well, I’m not sure of my reaction but many found this highly amusing. Shame I had loaded all the gear onto my barrow because I was also parked near the left hand gate. Vic and a couple others advised me that there had been a lot of bream caught from the peg recently. I think ‘had been’ is the important bit to remember at this point. Vic gave me the info on how to target these ‘slabs’ and I bought his enthusiasm, only getting my pole out and 3 top kits. I set up 2 kits to fish at 11m straight ahead and then 8m at the 2 o’clock position. The 3rd rig was for left/right margins. My plan was to fish 4mm/6mm expanders over micros. One set of expanders was sweetened and the other set normal. At the horn, I put a pot of micros on both lines and then tried both margins for some early bonuses on single maggots. One skimmer obliged on the 3rd put in.
Out on the 11m line it took about 15 mins before my first bite and this seemed to be the timescale for most bites. I found the sweetened pellets favorite and so I had a slow progression of roach and skimmers until an 8lb common got in on the act and tested my 18 hook and 0.10 bottom.

Peg 1 and the view down the left hand bank.

It was now about 12:30 and not a lot seemed to be happening. Shane Western was the nearest to me on peg 3 and biteless. The only action I could see was Steve King flashing out the pellet waggler and connecting with a few carp on peg 6. There wasn’t any news of excitement reaching me. I had been feeding micros every put in and was hoping the better bream would turn up and add some pounds to my meagre weight. I had a few more skimmers and one decent bream until about 2 o’clock when the swim went dead. At 2:30pm I decided to get out the tip rod with a straight lead and sent if there was any carp under the tree of the end bank. Still dead at 3 o’clock and Shaun Larkham came down the bank on the way home and advised that he had not had a bite and it was proving hard for most. I’m not generally one for packing up early but today was the exception. I tipped back the 8lb common and probably 5lb of silvers.

Treasure Tone sent me the score sheet and……….

Steve King took top honours with 30lb and that man Western on Peg 22 went home with another brown envelope after weighing in 24lb 1oz. Dave Allen had 3rd overall and so by default Bolton Boy Fletcher got the Silvers with 13lb 5oz.

12 anglers Did-Not-Weigh and top weight of 30lb...... hmmmm hard days fishing.
